The provision of criminal justice services in Indian Country is a key aspect of tribal sovereignty. These services, which may include policing, investigations, courts, corrections, sex offender registration, and probation/parole, are vital to the safety, vitality, and economic security of all communities.

The National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) is the main federal law that established our national program for the preservation of historic properties.

Before I became a lawyer, I was on the tribal council for my tribe, the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians. For three years I held a position that, in my tribe, we generally refer to as "tribal council member" or a "tribal leader," although I know in some tribes the term "tribal leader" is reserved solely for the tribe's highest-ranking official, such as a president or chair.

In the United States today, Native American women suffer from a disproportionate amount of violence in comparison to the rest of the population. On average, 1 in 3 Native American women are raped at least once in their lifetime, and the murder rate of Native women is 10 time higher than the national rate.
