Before I became a lawyer, I was on the tribal council for my tribe, the Hopland Band of Pomo Indians. For three years I held a position that, in my tribe, we generally refer to as "tribal council member" or a "tribal leader," although I know in some tribes the term "tribal leader" is reserved solely for the tribe's highest-ranking official, such as a president or chair.
