2021 Virtual Summer Law Clerk Program/Law Student Series

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the 2021 Virtual Summer Law Clerk Program/Law Student Series! The Younger Lawyers Division collaborated with the Law Student Division to provide students, legal interns, and recent graduates with the opportunity to participate in a variety of virtual panel presentations hosted by federal agencies and other notable speakers to learn about career development, missions and operations, employment opportunities, and more!

Legal Entrepreneurship: Why and How [Watch On-Demand]  

Presenter: Katherine (Katie) B. Kramer, DGW Kramer LLP 

The legal profession is overdue for a shakeup and for some new business models. Advancement at law firms can sometimes depend more on looking like the existing partnership than on talent or skill. By building a new practice, YOU are the boss and it’s a valuable solution when considering family obligations or other personal needs. You could even earn more. This quick presentation includes practical tips: start with minimal expenses; get advice from other legal entrepreneurs and small firm owners; treat the practice like a business; network; obtain non-legal resources.  

Alternative Service in the 21st Century  [Watch On-Demand]  

Presenter: Aaron H. Weiss, Director, Zimmer Kunz PLLC  

Tune in for a comprehensive understanding of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure regarding service. Leave this session understanding the need for utilizing electronic methods of alternative service and perfecting the use of these methods, including e-mail, social media, and company websites. You’ll also get a refresher on which courts and jurisdictions have permitted such alternative service and why. 

 

Mis en place: Preparing Your Cross-Examination [Watch On-Demand 

Presenter: Ben A. Barnes, Associate, Kirkland & Ellis LLP  

What are the common purposes of cross-examination and the procedural and evidentiary rules? This session will serve as a helpful guide for distilling a voluminous discovery record into a coherent cross-examination outline. Conducting a successful impeachment during cross-examination can be more difficult because it depends on what the witness states during their direct examination. Tune in for Ben’s techniques to get everything in its place!

Federal Prosecutor Panel Discussion – Working with OIGs

Please join speakers Paul Kaufman, Assistant United States Attorney in the Civil Division of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; Michael McCarthy, Criminal Trial Attorney, DOJ Criminal Division, Fraud Section; and Frieda Zimmerman, Special Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of the Inspector General, Eastern District of Washington. The prosecutors will discuss their experiences working civil and criminal cases with various Offices of the Inspector General (OIGs), and how Special Assistant United States Attorneys (SAUSAs) are detailed to work OIG cases in Districts throughout the country.
