Webinar: Professional Development – Exploring Employment Opportunities in Health Law

Are you a law student or new attorney thinking about your career path? Or a mid-career attorney looking to pivot in your area of practice? Have you ever wondered exactly what is health law and what types of jobs exist in health law? Join us on Friday, February 3rd at 2:00 p.m. Eastern to discuss all things related to health law jobs and careers!

The Health Law Section, Law Student Division, & Young Lawyers Division are excited to present a professional development session exploring employment opportunities in health law. This informative and interactive session will feature panelists working in various employment settings – private practice, in-house, non-profit, and government – for providers, payers, and regulators in legal, compliance, risk, contracting, and leadership roles.

Panelists will share about their health law interests, discuss how their careers developed and evolved, and provide guidance and advice for finding and enjoying a career in health law. The best part – panelists are ready to answer any questions you may have!

Anthony Cox, Attorney, Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott, LLC

Panelists for the Session:

Katie Gilbert Spear, Owner and Attorney, Dr. Katie Spear, PLLC

Dr. Katie Spear graduated with honors from Auburn University with a degree in Biomedical Sciences and then earned her Master’s degree in Public Health, specializing in Epidemiology, from University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health. She earned her Doctorate of Optometry from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Katie graduated summa cum laude from the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, with a concentration in Health Law and Compliance.

During her career, Katie has owned and managed a multi-location Optometry/Ophthalmology office and founded The Visual Performance Center, which has conducted numerous research studies in contact lenses, solutions, dry eye and visual performance. Katie is also a consultant and speaker for various eye care companies. She currently serves on the Florida Board of Optometry as Chair of Probable Cause.

Katie is excited to combine her extensive backgrounds in research, health care, and law to assist providers, patients, and other attorneys navigate the often-difficult waters of health law.

Grover (“Pete”) Peters III, Attorney, Richie & Gueringer, PC

Grover (“Pete”) Peters, JD, MSSM, MHA has over 35 years of comprehensive knowledge and experience in healthcare administration, leadership, information systems management, legal and regulatory compliance, network design, payer model development, financial management, and business development. Pete’s experience includes developing and managing hospital-owned and physician-owned integrated delivery networks, management services organizations, and multi-specialty medical groups and independent practice associations, and developing and negotiating statewide contracts with hospitals, physicians, and ancillary providers on behalf of a major health insurance company.

Mr. Peters was instrumental in drafting some of the first legislation in the nation allowing physicians to own stand-alone emergency room facilities and micro-hospitals. He has also assisted with the purchase and acquisition of several insolvent healthcare facilities and turning those facilities around within a short period of time.

Craig Garner, Owner and Attorney, Garner Health Law Corporation

Angela Eastman, Counsel, Aetna/CVS Health

Angela Eastman is the Vice Chair of the Health Law Section and Immediate Past Chair of the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section. She is currently employed as in-house counsel for a large health insurer and teaches part-time as adjunct faculty at Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law. Her previous employment includes working for a health system as associate general counsel, private practice attorney and mediator (litigation and transactional), and regulatory compliance consultant (market conduct and policy). She earned her JD at Vermont Law School and LLM at Pepperdine University School of Law.

Angela enjoys gardening and traveling. She remains active in her local community by volunteering for and supporting non-profit organizations with missions focused on self-sufficiency, education, women, and mental health and substance use disorder.

Debbie Hengeveld, Regulatory Affairs Specialist, Hologic, Inc.

Debbie Hengeveld works as a Regulatory Affairs Specialist at Hologic. She is dedicated to ensuring medical devices meet quality and compliance objectives for safety and efficacy required by US and international regulatory bodies. Debbie earned her J.D. from the University of Colorado in Boulder and her undergraduate in Environmental Science from the University of California – San Diego (UCSD). Prior to working in the biomedical industry, Debbie practiced as a lawyer advocating on behalf of children in all aspects of juvenile law, including foster care, mental health, education, truancy, delinquency, guardianship, and adoption.
