Speech Quarantines of Misinformation [CLE]
OCTOBER 18, 2021 | 12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. CT
The strong presumption against prior restraints, developed centuries ago in the age of printing presses, prevents modern authorities from quarantining even deadly misinformation before it goes viral. Professor Thai will offer his thoughts about re-conceptualizing viral misinformation as a pandemic and suggest ways in which First Amendment doctrine might adapt to accommodate compelling public health needs, without compromising free speech interests.
Professor Thai will welcome questions about his talk and also the Supreme Court, debates over its reform, and its so-called “shadow docket.”
Featured Speaker:
- Joseph Thai, Glenn R. Watson Centennial Chair in Law and Presidential Professor of Law, University of Oklahoma College of Law
