Kenneth Feinberg has been involved with nearly every major mass tort action in the past several decades and has demonstrated his commitment to pro bono work by volunteering to serve as special master for both the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund and the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.

Recently, The Federal Lawyer sat down with Laura Klein, who discussed the origins of the program, the difficulties that government attorneys face when they volunteer for pro bono work, and some of the program’s success stories.

In most states, the rules of professional conduct strongly encourage pro bono service. The Ninth Circuit’s Pro Bono Program is one way to fulfill that goal and to make a real difference—one appellant at a time.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois pioneered a program in which volunteer attorneys represent pro se plaintiffs in settlement conferences, which has helped the court to resolve an average of two employment discrimination cases each month during the program’s first 16 months of operation.
