As the novel coronavirus has spread, federal judges are seeing motions for release from custody on grounds that jails are breeding grounds for the virus, or that defendants’ medical vulnerabilities justify release. Navigating these motions challenges judges to make difficult, individualized determinations about prisoner and community safety during a pandemic not yet fully understood.
