Message From the Chair

Welcome to the FBA Indian Law Section.  The Board wishes you, your loved ones, and your communities good health and blessings.

We continue our work to provide important and relevant programming for practicing attorneys, judges, and all those working in the field of Federal Indian Law.  The Board is excited to announce that the FBA Indian Law Section will be the single recipient of the FBA Presidential Citation, in recognition of the Section’s outstanding work on the 2023 Annual Indian Law Conference during FBA’s Annual Meeting and Convention on Saturday, September 23, 2023, in Memphis, TN.  The Section will also be honored with a Section & Division Recognition Award during the ceremony.  As we know, significant court cases and federal policies impact Tribal communities much more than any other peoples.  It is our hope that our Section events will continue to provide you with knowledge, information, strategies and tools to advocate for positive outcomes for all of Indian Country.

Our annual D.C. Indian Law Conference scheduled for Friday, November 3, 2023, will provide sessions on significant Indian Law decisions, considering this year’s 200th anniversary of Johnson v. McIntosh, the fight for equity in Indian Country and beyond, and other tribal perspectives on national hot topics.  The Conference Co-Chairs, Jody Cummings and JoAnn Kintz are putting together an excellent program for this hybrid conference.

We’ve also set the date for our FBA Annual Indian Law Conference that will be held on April 4-5, 2024, at Sandia Resort & Casino in Sandia Pueblo, NM.  The Conference Planning Committee of Chair Maryanne Mohan, Deputy Chairs Alex Pearl, Katie Klass, and Josett Monette have begun their work of planning the FBA’s largest conference of the year.  We look forward to seeing all of you at Fed Bar!

Our publications coordinator, Leah Jurss will be working with the Board, the Planning Committees and conference speakers to solicit columns and highlights for the Federal Lawyer, and other Indian Law related items.  We welcome your involvement in the Section, if you have ideas or feedback you would like to share.  Please feel free to contact me or any member of the Board.  Sincere best wishes to you.
