Message from the Chair

My name is Jeff Burns, and it is an honor and privilege to serve as Chair of the Federal Litigation Section. The Federal Litigation Section is the FBA’s largest Section with more than 3,000 members.  The purpose of the Federal Litigation Section is to further the purposes of the FBA and to concentrate on the fundamental practice of law in federal courts.  We welcome both plaintiff and defense attorneys from a variety of fields.

The Section is very active and there are plenty of ways to get involved. We publish a quarterly newsletter, SideBAR, which features articles from our members and announcements of relevant events.  We welcome contributions and articles for publication in the newsletter. The Section receives frequent requests to sponsor or co-sponsor programs, to contribute to funding a reception or to underwrite all or a portion of activities by local chapters and affiliates of the FBA. We are always looking to partner with Chapters, other Sections, and Divisions, and to facilitate CLE programming events for Federal Bar Association members. If you are interested, the guidelines can be found here and the application for such requests is available here.

Our committee structure, shown below, provides anyone interested in a particular Committee  to become active in our Section leadership.  In addition to the Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary/Treasurer, and Membership Chair of the Section, we also have the following Committees:

  • Programming / Continuing Legal Education Committee
  • Communications / Outreach Committee
  • Nominating Committee

Thank you for visiting the Section’s webpage, and I hope you will consider joining our Section if you have an interest in litigation in federal courts.  Please don’t hesitate to send me an email or call me if I can be of any assistance to you.

James Jeffrey “Jeff” Burns
2025-2026 Federal Litigation Section Chair
