Webinar: Stern to Bow: A Look Back to Significant Maritime Issues of 2022 and a Look Ahead to Emerging Issues in 2023 and Beyond
This webinar will revisit noteworthy decisions and issues of 2022 involving seaman status, the shipping industry and supply chain, the passenger vessel industry, and marine insurance coverage and also provide a protection and indemnity club perspective. The panel will examine the legal issues involved, provide an analysis on the resolution of those issues and views from the club and marine insurer perspective. The panel will also look ahead to 2023 and beyond and discuss how the decisions and issues currently affect the different industries and areas of maritime law and discuss how they potentially further impact those areas and law in the years to come.

About the Presenters
Moderator: Matthew A. Moeller, Owner & Managing Attorney, The Moeller Firm LLC
Matthew’s experience and practice primarily includes the representation of vessel owner and operators, contractors, and shipyards as well as other businesses in maritime, construction and commercial disputes. This experience includes the defense of Jones Act, Longshore Harbor and Worker’s Compensation Act, and maritime personal injury claims, maritime contractual disputes and maritime property damage matters, as well as the representation of marine insurers in insurance coverage matters. Matthew’s experience also includes the defense of insurers, hotel operators, and transportation companies in land-based personal injury actions.

Jessica Link Martyn, Of Counsel, Rawle & Henderson
Ms. Martyn is a Proctor in Admiralty and co-leads the Firm’s Maritime Practice Group. Throughout her career as a maritime lawyer, Ms. Martyn has focused on resolving disputes on behalf of shipowners and operators and their insurers in vessel, cargo, and environmental casualty cases, commercial matters, and personal injury and death claims brought under the Jones Act, section 905(b) of the LHWCA, and the general maritime law. She has broad experience with matters of admiralty jurisdiction and procedure, including vessel arrests and attachments, limitation actions, apportionment of damages, maritime government contractor liability, and litigation against the U.S. government in admiralty.
Emily McCollough, Head of Claims (Americas), West of England P&I Club
A qualified lawyer, Emily has significant P&I and Defence experience across all areas of claims. She joined the West from another International Group Club as a Syndicate Manager and, prior to that, worked both in-house with a UK shipowner and within a City law firm. Ms. McCulloch advises on disputes under charterparties and Contracts of Affreightment including off-hire, underperformance claims and recovering disputed/undisputed demurrage on behalf of Members. Her expertise also includes handling P&I and DTH claims from notification to resolution, such as bunker disputes, contact damage, cargo claims and personal injury.
Anthony J. “Tony” Staines, Partner, Staines & Eppling
Anthony J. “Tony” Staines was born in Belize, British Honduras. He received a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Orleans in 1976 and earned a Juris Doctorate from Louisiana State University Law Center in 1980. Following law school, Tony served a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Frank J. Poloza, United States District Court, Middle District of Louisiana. In addition to his regular practice, he has served as a delegate to the Louisiana State Bar Association; has been a member of the faculty for the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel Trial Academy; a participant at Professionalism Orientation for the Louisiana State Bar Association; has presented articles to the admiralty committee of the Maritime Law Association and has presented at the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute Seminar.
