2024 Paris Fashion Law Conference

The Intellectual Property Law Section of the Federal Bar Association, the Association des Avocats Propriete Industrielle (AAPI) and the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), and La Fondation des États-Unis are thrilled to welcome you to the 2024 Annual Paris Fashion Law Conference.

This event will be held at the picturesque Art-Deco Grand Salon of La Fondation des États-Unis (FEU) in Paris, France. The FEU is a cultural center serving Franco-American cultures since 1930. It is one of the first of 45 residences to have been built on the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris (CiuP) campus. The FEU’s cultural program offers a wide range of concerts, exhibitions, workshops, conferences, and performances, and showcases FEU artists-in-residence and alumni.

Global AI Regulations: A Look at the State of AI
2:15 – 3:15 pm

This panel will explore the intersection between Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property. Panelists will address litigation in the United States pertaining to intellectual property ownership and artificial intelligence, and a comparison with other countries, most notably France and the EU. Panelists will also address existing and pending regulations, including the European Union’s AI Act.

Creativity and Pleadings: What the Future Can Harbor for IP and Fashion
3:30pm – 4:30pm

This panel will explore the latest cases filed across diverse jurisdictions. For example, several designers filed suit in California alleging RICO violations against Shein. Using RICO to protect intellectual property is an unusual strategy. Panelists will explore recent theories advocated by rights holders that might pave the way for future precedent.

Succession Planning and the Fashion Industry: Death and the Aftermath of an Acquisition 
4:45 pm- 5:45pm

This panel will address the difficulties faced by eponymous fashion brands, and the exit of a namesake fashion designer. Whether sudden or anticipated, such exits can result in contentious proceedings involving heirs or the owners of a successor entity. Panelists will address asset protection strategies and discuss common contentious issues encountered in such circumstances. Panelists will share their experience through concrete example.
