Message From the Chair
Welcome to the Corporate and Association Counsel Division (CACD) of the Federal Bar Association! My name is Bill Whitman, and I am entrusted with serving as the current Chair of this outstanding division. I am lead counsel for Federal Express Corporation, and I spend a fair amount of my legal practice in federal court and considering the ramifications federal law has on FedEx. Ever since my days serving as a federal law clerk in the District of Nebraska for the Honorable Thomas Shanahan, I have loved practicing in federal court. Fortunately, at FedEx, we have opportunities to do so, and our lawyers also have a proud tradition of being very involved in the FBA, with many past presidents of FBA Chapters in the Western District of Tennessee and the Western District of Pennsylvania.
We are so excited for your interest in this fascinating and interdisciplinary Division of the FBA. The CACD is for those of you who are interested in the intersection of federal court practice, life as in-house corporate counsel, and outside legal counsel who are representing and working with in-house corporate counsel in matters that touch upon our federal courts. We are undoubtedly a varied, diverse group. We are also a group that has a lot of fun. Among other highlights over the past few years include that we have been extremely active in the FBA’s Annual Meeting, hosting wide-ranging CLEs that have touched upon, for example, (i) Environmental Social Governance and (ii) high-profile sports litigation in federal court and the interests of in-house legal counsel for sports teams. We have also hosted a number of current and former federal judges and in-house counsel discussing timely topics for your practice in federal court. Because we are interdisciplinary and have geographically disparate members across the country, we often team up with other chapters and divisions. By way of example, our next collaboration is with the ADR Section of the FBA.
