2024 Capitol Hill Day Reflections

My name is Elle Peterson—I am a 3L at University of San Diego School of Law and Student Member of the Federal Bar Association. With great pride, I serve as the 9th Circuit Representative for the FBA Law Student Division Board—a role that’s not just a title, but a passport to remarkable experiences. When the opportunity arose to participate in Capitol Hill Day, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. It was an amazing opportunity to make our voice heard as FBA members, to advocate for causes important to our profession, and to forge meaningful connections with other inspiring members. From the moment I stepped into the bustling atmosphere of the Rayburn Building at 7:45 am on Thursday morning, I knew I was embarking on a remarkable journey.

Initially greeted by a mix of anticipation and a craving for caffeine as I joined fellow FBA members in line for much-needed coffee, I soon found myself immersed in a sea of unfamiliar faces. Though I am a member of the Law Student Division Board, I had never actually met any of my fellow board members in person before. This was the same for the other members of my California Delegation, who I had been emailing in preparation for Capitol Hill Day, but was even less prepared because I had never seen any of their faces before. However, meeting them in person for the first time was a wholly different experience, one that was surprisingly comforting as warm welcomes quickly dissolved any lingering apprehensions.

The day commenced with Chairman Darrell Issa’s captivating remarks, setting the tone for what would be an impactful series of engagements. As a fellow San Diegan, Chairman Issa’s presence resonated deeply with me, reinforcing a sense of connection and shared purpose. His insights into the urgent need to fund the Judiciary Safety Act underscored the gravity of our mission, igniting a newfound determination within me to advocate tirelessly for the safety of our judiciary.

We then dove into our meetings with members of the House of Representatives, which proved to be both enlightening and invigorating. The unexpected presence of Congressman Aguilar at our first meeting with his staff exemplified a commendable awareness of FBA concerns, fueling engaging discussions that highlighted the tangible impact of our advocacy efforts. We had three additional meetings with members of the House of Representatives before indulging in lunch at a nearby restaurant. It offered me the chance to revisit familiar haunts from my time spent in DC during an internship with the DOJ last year. Sharing these experiences with my California compatriots was a delight, and I received invaluable advice from fellow FBA members about my upcoming bar exam and my impending “big girl job” in the Fall.

Transitioning to the Senate Building, we found ourselves immersed in the rich history and intricate workings of Capitol Hill. Amidst the hustle and bustle, we navigated through the vibrant gift shop, adorned with cherry blossom seasonal merchandise, adding an extra touch of charm to our day. However, it was the engaging discussions with Senator Padilla and Senator Butler’s teams that truly captivated our attention. To our pleasant surprise, Senator Butler herself made an impromptu appearance following our meeting with her staff. Her warmth and willingness to connect, evidenced by her graciousness in taking photos with us, served as a poignant reminder of the significance of our advocacy efforts.

As the day gradually transitioned into evening, we gathered for a celebratory dinner just steps away from the iconic White House, enveloped in an atmosphere of achievement and camaraderie. Amidst the backdrop of our nation’s capital, we paused to reflect on the profound transformation that had unfolded throughout the day. What initially appeared as daunting challenges had metamorphosed into sources of empowerment, igniting a newfound appreciation for the value of advocating for causes close to our hearts. While I may currently be just a law student, the significance of our collective efforts and the pivotal role played by the FBA in shaping the future of our profession became increasingly evident. This realization only served to reaffirm my unwavering commitment to effecting positive change and leaving a lasting impact within the legal community.

Yet, amidst the whirlwind of meetings and discussions, the true highlight of the day emerged in the form of connections forged with fellow legal professionals from across the nation and within my own state. Whether engaged in lively discussions over lunch or strategizing for our next endeavors, there existed a palpable sense of camaraderie and shared purpose that transcended geographical boundaries. It was a truly inspiring experience, one that I am eager to nurture and maintain as we continue our respective journeys within the legal profession. Here’s to staying connected and fostering a community dedicated to driving meaningful change!

In conclusion, Capitol Hill Day with the Federal Bar Association was an eye-opening and inspiring experience, one that has left an indelible mark on my journey as a budding legal professional. As I eagerly anticipate future opportunities to continue advocating for positive change, I am filled with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to make a meaningful impact within our profession!
