Panelist Biographies:
Hon. Allison H. Goddard was sworn in as a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of California in August 2019. She graduated from Boston College in 1993 and received her J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2000. Judge Goddard spent the first half of her legal career representing corporate defendants in litigation at Cooley LLP and at her own law firm, Jaczko Goddard LLP. In 2011, she shifted her practice to representing plaintiffs in complex and intellectual property litigation. Judge Goddard has tried several cases, including class actions and patent infringement disputes. She speaks regularly on eDiscovery and technology in the law, including artificial intelligence. She also teaches trial practice and coaches a mock trial team at a local high school.
James Cooper is a Professor of Law at California Western School of Law. Professor Cooper has served as the Associate Dean of Experiential Learning and as Assistant Dean at the law school. A Cambridge University-trained Barrister and Solicitor, Professor Cooper started his career with Baker & McKenzie, and is or has been a faculty member, visiting professor, or visiting scholar at the University of Strathclyde Law School in Glasgow, Scotland; the University of Toronto; University of California, San Diego; the Franz von Liszt Institute at Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany; the University of Macau; Singapore University of Social Sciences; and the University of Heidelberg. Mr. Cooper’s scholarship has appeared in leading journals in North America, South America, and Europe. He is a frequent public speaker, and has contributed to newspapers, television, and radio news programs around the world. Some of his law review articles have been paired with documentary films he co-directed. Professor Cooper’s work has recently focused on the legal regulation of emerging technologies including blockchain, artificial intelligence, and the metaverse.
