Message from the Chair

I am happy to introduce myself as the newly appointed Chair of the Social Security Law Section, effective April 1, 2021. I am a partner in the law firm of Black and Davison, P.C. where I specialize in elder and disability law. I have been active in the section for several years having contributed to the section’s newsletter and presented CLEs on behalf of the section. Section leadership has met three times since being formally re-activated, and we are excited about the prospects for increasing engagement with section members and enhancing the federal legal profession, especially in the area of Social Security law.

I am proud to work with distinguished and experienced attorneys on the Board and in the Section. Dana Duncan has been appointed as Vice-Chair and Deborah Spector, as Treasurer. Additional members of the Board include former Section Chair David Ferrari, Barbara Silverstone, Beth Alpert, and Spelios Bacoyanis. Your participation is invited and encouraged as we continue to identify leadership roles for the section. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals who are interested in growth and leadership in the Federal Bar Association. We also welcome your thoughts and ideas for relevant CLE programming and newsletter articles, and we encourage you to reach out to your colleagues to encourage them to join the section and become involved.

The section also has already been engaged in furthering the practice by supporting a letter written by NOSSCR (the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives) urging an increase in the representative’s fee cap and requesting a process to ensure annual inflation-linked updates. The FBA National Board subsequently voted to sign on to the letter as a national organization and added this to the FBA issues agenda.

Finally, the section is in the process of updating its bylaws, and we will request your support of the changes once the document is finalized. In the meantime, if you are interested in serving in section leadership or have new and exciting ideas in the area of Social Security law, please email me at jerrold@bdlawgrp.com.  I look forward to serving as your Chair. Thank you!

Jerrold A. Sulcove
