Mississippi Chapter Capitol Club Meeting<\/h3>\n

The Mississippi Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) was privileged to have U.S. District Court Chief Judge Dan Jordan of the Southern District speak to an overflow crowd at the Capitol Club on the accomplishments of the Court in 2019 and the plans for 2020.\u00a0 Chief Judge Jordan praised the work of District Court Clerk Arthur Johnston III.\u00a0 The members elected a new slate of officers to serve for 2020.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter Gulf Coast Meeting\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Mississippi Chapter of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) joined with the Harrison County Bar Association (HCBA)(Gulfport\/Biloxi) to host Senior U.S. District Court Judge Louis Guirola Jr. for a talk about his experiences as a district court judge and his duties as a senior status judge. The Great Southern Club offered a wonderful buffet for this yearly Gulf Coast meeting.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter Student Division Meeting<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

U.S. Magistrate Judge Mike Parker returned to his alma mater Mississippi College School of Law (MC Law) to speak to the Student Division of the Federal Bar Association at MC Law about the operation of his court. Judge Parker brought with him his two Federal judicial clerks who spoke about their roles in Judge Parker\u2019s chambers.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter Meeting<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter held its Oxford luncheon meeting at the McCormick Caf\u00e9 prior to the CLE sponsored by the Northern District of the U.S. District Court. Chief Judge Sharion Aycock addressed the members and guests of the Chapter with news of the new Federal Courthouse for Greenville and the status of the courthouse renovations in Aberdeen.<\/p>\n

Mississippi College School of Law Luncheon Program<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Law Student Division of the Federal Bar Association at Mississippi College School of Law hosted Jason Davis from the Mississippi Attorney General\u2019s Office as its speaker for a luncheon program for law students. Mr. Davis recently represented the State of Mississippi before the U.S. Supreme Court and discussed what is was like to prepare for and argue at our country\u2019s highest court..<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter\u2019s Capital Club Meeting with Judge Keith Starrett<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter hosted Senior U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mills for its bi-monthly meeting at the Capital Club before an overflow crowd. Judge Mills previously served on the Mississippi Supreme Court and the Mississippi House of Representatives. From this later experience Judge Mills described some of his experiences in crafting legislation.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter\u2019s Capital Club Meeting with Judge Keith Starrett<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Shortly after taking senior status U.S. District Court Judge Keith Starrett spoke to the Mississippi Chapter\u2019s bi-monthly meeting at the Capital Club in Jackson, Mississippi. Judge Starrett shared with the attendees what it is like to have senior status as well as his work on the reentry initiative he has championed. All expect Judge Starrett to continue to have an active docket.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter\u2019s Annual Gulf Coast Meeting<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Just after having taken the oath of office, U.S. Circuit Judge Kyle Duncan addressed the Mississippi Chapter for their annual Gulf Coast meeting at the historic White House Hotel in Biloxi. Judge Duncan spoke about his career prior to his judicial appointment and his confirmation process. A number of local Federal judges turned out to see who would be reviewing their cases at the Fifth Circuit.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter\u2019s March Meeting<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Newly minted U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst of the Southern District of Mississippi addressed the Mississippi Chapter members and guests at its February meeting. Mr. Hurst outlined some of his priorities and shared his philosophy on a cooperative approach to law enforcement.<\/p>\n

November Luncheon with U.S. District Court Chief Judge Dan Jordan<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter hosted U.S. District Court Chief Judge Dan Jordan for our November luncheon meeting at the Capital Club in Jackson with a record number of attendees. Members were pleased to hear from Judge Jordan who recently assumed the position of Chief Judge. Chief Judge Jordan answered a number of questions that had been submitted prior to the meeting and that were asked during his comments. Chapter President Brad Davis introduced Chief Judge Jordan, summarized the events over his year as president, and announced the details for the next meeting at which the leadership transition will take place.<\/p>\n

November 2017 Law Student Division Panel<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Student Division of the Federal Bar Association at Mississippi College School of Law hosted a panel that focused on how the FBI and the U.S. Attorney\u2019s office work together in the investigation and prosecution of Federal crimes. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregg Kennedy and Special Agent in Charge Christopher Freeze of the Jackson FBI provided an interesting and informative outline of how these two agencies coordinate from the reporting of a crime to sentencing in Federal Court. The panelists took questions from the MC Law students and described the career options in each agency. The Law Student Bar Association provided lunch for the attendees.<\/p>\n

Chapter Meeting with Chief Judge Sharion Aycock<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter met in Oxford at the McCormick Caf\u00e9 prior to the CLE hosted by the U.S. District Court of the Northern District. Chief Judge Sharion Aycock updated the overflow crowd with news of the District to include the transfer of Federal prisoners and the plans for the new courthouse in Greenville, invited comments from her fellow judges from the Northern District, and responded to questions from the members and their guests.<\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter hosted U.S. District Court Judge Sul Ozerden for our September luncheon meeting at the White House hotel on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Judge Ozerden shared practice pointers with the capacity gathering of attorneys and judges. President Davis shared information about the upcoming Oxford luncheon and conducted chapter business.<\/p>\n

July Luncheon with U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge E. Grady Jolly<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter hosted U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge E. Grady Jolly for our July luncheon meeting at the Capital Club. Judge Jolly has announced he will take senior status in October. This long-serving Circuit Judge shared with the overflow crowd his insights on the operation of the Fifth Circuit and offered some observations of the Court and its judges from his years of service. He entertained questions from the audience and used his well-known sense of humor to illustrate his points. President Brad Davis introduced Judge Jolly and noted the upcoming meetings of the Chapter on the Gulf Coast and in Oxford.<\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter hosted U.S. Magistrate Judges David A. Sanders and Jane M. Virden for our May luncheon meeting at the Capital Club. Our Magistrate Judges shared with the overflow crowd their insights into Federal pre-trial practice and pointers for effective practice. They entertained questions from the audience and engaged in a lively give and take with their comments. President Brad Davis presented outgoing President Mike Hurst with a gavel and plaque and thanked him for his outstanding leadership of the Chapter for the past year.<\/p>\n

March Luncheon with the Honorable Leslie Southwick<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter was honored to have Fifth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Leslie Southwick speak to a packed luncheon at the Capital Club for its March meeting. Judge Southwick provided a historical look at the confirmation process for Federal judges in light of the current political process and shared some insights from his own confirmation process.<\/p>\n

Student Division of the FBA at Mississippi College School of Law<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Student Division of the FBA at Mississippi College School of Law hosted former U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft in March for a presentation to the students, faculty, and members of the legal community. General Ashcroft shared with the standing room only crowd the ups and downs of his political career and the lessons he learned along the way. He took questions from the student members of the FBA and the general audience and received a standing ovation.<\/p>\n

Jackson Meeting with U.S. District Court Judge Henry Wingate<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter introduced its new officer slate at the January meeting in the Capital Club. Outgoing president Mike Hurst passed the gavel to incoming president Brad Davis and welcomed Mary Helen Wall to the leadership team. U.S. District Court Judge Henry Wingate provided a history lesson focusing on the tense period prior to the Revolutionary War leading to the Boston Massacre in which Crispus Attucks was killed\u2013thought to be the first casualty of the Revolutionary War.<\/p>\n

Oxford Meeting with the Northern District<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In October, the Mississippi Chapter hosted a luncheon at The Inn in Oxford in connection with a CLE program conducted by the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Mississippi. Chief Judge Sharion Aycock spoke to the members and their guests about events and case workload in the Northern District and introduced her fellow judges and special guests. Following the luncheon the members attended the excellent CLE sponsored by the Court.<\/p>\n

Mississippi Chapter Gulf Coast Meeting<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter met in September on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in the historic White House Hotel. President Mike Hurst introduced Charlie Spillers who shared accounts from his book Confessions of an Undercover Agent<\/em> as he worked to arrest drug dealers and other criminals in Louisiana and Mississippi. Chief Judge Louis Guirola had worked with Charlie in his early days in law enforcement and was a special guest.<\/p>\n

May Meeting with The Honorable Charles Pickering<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Former Fifth Circuit Judge Charles Pickering spoke to the Mississippi Chapter at the May luncheon meeting at the Capital Club. Judge Pickering described his work as a long-serving U.S. District Court Judge and the confirmation process associated with his recess appointment to the Fifth Circuit. Following his Federal judicial service Judge Pickering served as a litigation mediator and maintained a law practice in Petal, Mississippi. A number of Judge Pickering\u2019s former judicial colleagues attended the luncheon.<\/p>\n

Professor Matt Steffey of the Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson spoke at the March meeting of the Mississippi Chapter and provided a review of recent decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court and some predictions about the approaches the Court might take in pending cases. He fielded questions from the members in a lively exchange regarding the philosophies of Constitutional interpretation.<\/p>\n

January Meeting with U.S. District Court Judge Keith Starrett <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

U.S. District Court Judge Keith Starrett was the speaker for the January meeting of the Mississippi Chapter. An overflow group of FBA members and guests enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch at the Capital Club and were treated to an excellent talk by Judge Starrett concerning the concept of re-entry from incarceration, drug courts, and veterans courts. The Chapter voted to approve the slate of new officers. President Mike Hurst accepted the gavel of leadership from Dean Meta Copeland who provided outstanding leadership in 2015.<\/p>\n

November Meeting with Congressman Greg Harper<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Gulf Coast Meeting with Gov. Haley Barbour <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour was the luncheon speaker at the Gulf Coast meeting of the Mississippi Chapter held at the historic and newly reopened White House Hotel. The Federal Judges turned out in force to join a nice cohort of practitioners. Governor Barbour\u2019s remarks focused on the recovery following Hurricane Katrina and the role played by the various institutions to include attorneys and the legal community. Following the luncheon Governor Barbour signed copies of his new book America\u2019s Great Storm: Leading through Hurricane Katrina.<\/em><\/p>\n

October 2015 Meeting with Chief Judge Sharion Aycock<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Chief Judge Sharion Aycock assembled the Federal Judges of the Northern District of Mississippi for the October luncheon meeting of the Mississippi Chapter prior to the CLE they host each year in Oxford. Chief Judge Aycock provided an update for the Northern District, introduced the judges of the District, and then presented her special guest Circuit Judge Jennifer Elrod from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit who spoke to the record crowd about the activities of her court.<\/p>\n

September 2015 Meeting with Hon. Neil Olack<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Neil Olack of the Northern and Southern District of Mississippi presented the September program for the Mississippi Chapter. Judge Olack used a series of examples to show the relevance of bankruptcy practice to many other practice areas. As a result of his talk a number of attorneys vowed to return to their offices and check the bankruptcy filings. In addition to his judicial duties, Judge Olack is an adjunct professor at Mississippi College School of Law.<\/p>\n

July 2015 Meeting with Hon. Michael Mills <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

U.S. District Court Judge Michael Mills of the Northern District of Mississippi spoke to an overflow group at the Capital Club for the July meeting of the Mississippi Chapter. Judge Mills used his sharp wit and captivating story telling ability to share his experiences and provide trial advice. Prior to his appointment to the Federal bench, Judge Mills was a private practitioner, an appellate judge on the Mississippi Supreme Court, and a Representative in the Mississippi Legislature. He used humorous examples to compare and contrast the legal positions he held.<\/p>\n

October 2014 Luncheon <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mississippi Chapter recently hosted a luncheon on Thursday, October 16, 2014, featuring the Honorable John Gargiulo, the new U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Southern District of Mississippi in Gulfport, Mississippi. The chapter followed the luncheon by partnering with Habitat for Humanity for a construction project there in Gulfport the following day, in conjunction with a grant the chapter received from the Foundation of the FBA.<\/p>\n
