Annual Judicial Reception<\/h4>\n

On Tuesday, June 7, 2016, the Massachusetts Chapter held its Annual Judicial Reception at the Boston Harbor Hotel and proudly recognized the Honorable F. Dennis Saylor IV. <\/p>\n

The Honorable Nathaniel Gorton introduced Judge Saylor with a history of his life and experience before coming to the bench. Judge Saylor provided brief remarks to the community of lawyers, judges and family members gathered to celebrate him.<\/p>\n

Matthew Baltay, Partner at Foley Hoag, President of the Massachusetts Chapter, presented awards to honor Lisa Tittemore of Sunstein Kann Murphy and Timbers as Immediate Past President of the Chapter and Susan Weise from the Litigation Division of the City of Boston in recognition of twenty years of exemplary service to the Federal Bar Association. <\/p>\n

The Board of Directors and members of the FBA-MA came together from around the state for this momentous evening. <\/p>\n

\u201cImplications of the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s June Escobar<\/i> Ruling on False Claims Act Cases \u2013 Perspectives from all sides of the issues\u201d<\/h4>\n
The dog days of summer did not stop nearly 60 attorneys, including four sitting judges, from attending the Massachusetts Chapter\u2019s Civil Health Law Section\u2019s panel discussion, Implications of the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s June Escobar<\/u> Ruling on False Claims Act Cases \u2013 Perspectives from all sides of the issues.<\/i> \n

Escobar recognized the important \u201cimplied certification\u201d theory in False Claims Act cases and created numerous questions about the reach and application of that theory. The Honorable Dennis Saylor provided valuable judicial insight about Escobar\u2019s implications. <\/p>\n

The panelists\u2019 diverse experience provided attendees with practical insight about future FCA cases. Gregg Shapiro, Chief of the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Unit for the United States Attorney\u2019s Office for the District of Massachusetts, shared his individual perspective based on his years of experience. <\/p>\n

The defense and whistleblower perspectives were shared respectively by Lawrence Krauss, a litigation partner in Foley & Lardner\u2019s Boston Office, and Suzanne Durrell, a nationally known attorney and affiliate of the Whistleblower Law Collaborative in Boston. <\/p>\n

The panel was moderated by Michelle Peirce, the section\u2019s co-chair.<\/p>\n

The diverse panel generated interesting and spirited discussions about this long-awaited ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. Attendees were able to continue the discussion at a reception that followed at the Moakley Courthouse. <\/p>\n

The Health Law Section is co-chaired by Michelle R. Peirce and Jason Drori. Peirce is a shareholder at Donoghue Barrett & Singal, P.C. and co-manages the firm\u2019s litigation group. Drori is Senior Counsel at Foley & Lardner. <\/p>\n

Reception and Panel Honoring Women Who Serve on the MA Federal Bench<\/h4>\n
On October 6, 2015, the Massachusetts Chapter of the Federal Bar Association hosted a historic panel discussion of the women judges who serve on the Federal Bench in Massachusetts. Michelle Schaffer, Past President of the FBA, moderated an interesting discussion on past, present and future roles of the women attorneys and judges in Massachusetts.\n

The 2015 Annual Judicial Reception was held at the Boston Harbor Hotel on June 10, 2015 in honor of Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton. <\/p>\n

Event Honoring Magistrate Judge Kenneth Neiman\u2019s Retirement<\/h4>\n

The event was held in Springfield, MA, on Friday January, 16, 2015, at the beautiful federal courthouse there, and was extremely well attended by federal court practitioners, staff and judges. <\/p>\n

As Judge Neiman and I are both graduates of Tufts University, I was pleased to present him with a Tufts banner during my opening remarks at the event. Clerk of Court for USDCMA Robert Farrell presented Judge Neiman with a U.S. flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 5, 2015, which I understand was the date of the 20th anniversary of his first day as a judge.<\/p>\n

The Massachusetts Chapter held a terrific event on Jan. 13, 2015 at Suffolk Law School, with Hon. Gustavo Gelpi and Prof. Karen Blum speaking on a number of timely topics, including legal issues around police brutality lawsuits, the importance of the independence of the judiciary to the rule of law, and the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.\n
