{"id":7,"date":"2019-10-29T03:03:49","date_gmt":"2019-10-29T03:03:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fedbar.org\/lafayetteacadiana-chapter\/\/lafayette-acadiana-chapter\/past-events\/"},"modified":"2019-10-29T18:44:04","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T18:44:04","slug":"past-events","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.fedbar.org\/lafayetteacadiana-chapter\/lafayette-acadiana-chapter\/past-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Past Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n<strong><font size=\"4\">\u201cBrown Bag\u201d Bankruptcy CLE with Bankruptcy Judge Robert Summerhays<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A Brown Bag CLE with the Honorable Robert Summerhays, Chief Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Louisiana, was hosted by the Lafayette\/Acadiana Chapter of the FBA on July 27, 2016 at the U.S. Bankruptcy Courthouse in Lafayette, Louisiana. Judge Summerhays presented to the group of 36 attorneys in attendance, who included both bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy practitioners. Following a catered lunch, attendants were given an overview of recent trends in consumer and commercial bankruptcy filings at both the national and local levels, which prompted an interactive discussion of the potential economic factors influencing those trends. In addition, Judge Summerhays discussed several recent and notable bankruptcy rulings from the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. The seminar concluded with announcements of the Chapter\u2019s upcoming events in 2016, including another Brown Bag CLE, a fishing rodeo, and the inaugural lecture series honoring the Hon. W. Eugene Davis, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fedbar.org\/Image-Library\/Chapters\/Lafayette\/BR-CLE.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fedbar.org\/lafayetteacadiana-chapter\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/46\/2019\/10\/BR-CLE-tn-jpg.jpeg\" class=\"img-fluid\"><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><font size=\"4\">Twelfth Annual Judge John Shaw \u201cCountry Gentleman\u201d Civility and Ethics Seminar<\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On December 3, 2015, the Lafayette-Acadiana Chapter of the Federal Bar Association hosted the 12th Annual Judge John Shaw \u201cCountry Gentlemen\u201d Civility &amp; Ethics CLE, in conjunction with the election and swearing-in of the 2016 Board Members. The newest member of the bench in the Western District of Louisiana, Magistrate Judge Carol B. Whitehurst, introduced herself to the bar with \u201cBest Practices for Magistrate Judge Whitehurst,\u201d followed by an interactive discussion addressing recent amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, led by Judge Whitehurst and A.G. (\u201cAlec\u201d) Alexander, III, partner at Breazeale, Sachse &amp; Wilson, L.L.P. Attorneys Leslie Schiff of Schiff, Scheckman &amp; White in Opelousas, Louisiana, and Tammy Parker Pratt of Ottinger Hebert, LLC in Lafayette, Louisiana presented \u201cHot Topics in Ethics \u2013 2015.\u201d The Honorable Richard T. Haik presented our bar with his last CLE as a sitting judge, \u201cDo\u2019s and Don\u2019t\u2019s in Federal Court.\u201d To help Judge Haik with his transition back into private practice and to thank him for his service over the last twenty-five years, our outgoing Chapter President, Kenneth W. Dejean, presented Judge Haik with a new briefcase on behalf of the Lafayette-Acadiana Chapter. The symposium is a living memorial to Judge Shaw\u2019s contribution to the federal jurisprudence and legal scholarship and concentrates on civility in the courtroom trials as well as ethical and professionalism concerns.
