It seems to be everywhere these days and is usually associated with meditation\, yoga\, and other wellness techniques. But mindfulness\, at bottom\, is about training the brain. As Judge Jeremy Fogel has explained\, “mindfulness actually is a remarkably simple and universal concept….Essentially\, it involves slowing down one’s mental processes enough to allow one to notice as much as possible about a given moment or situation\, and then to act thoughtfully based on what one has noticed.” \nWhile certainly contributing to improved health and personal development\, mindfulness practices can meaningfully optimize the work of lawyers and judges. Making reasoned decisions and arguments\, thoughtfully approaching repetitive tasks\, and maintaining emotional regulation in stressful situations are job requirements for all lawyers and judicial officers. Bacharach (Moderator) \nSince 2013\, Judge Robert Bacharach has served as a United States Circuit Judge for the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. Before his appointment\, he served as a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Western District of Oklahoma from 1999-2013. Before that appointment\, he served as a law clerk for Chief Judge William J. Holloway\, Jr. of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and then practiced civil litigation at Crowe & Dunlevy in Oklahoma City\, Oklahoma\, from 1987 to 1999. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nDr. Amishi Jha\, PhD is Director of Contemplative Neuroscience and Professor of Psychology at the University of Miami. Prior to her current post\, she was an Assistant Professor at the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her B.S. in Biological Psychology from the University of Michigan\, her Ph.D. in Psychology (Cognitive Neuroscience) from the University of California–Davis\, and her post-doctoral training at the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center at Duke University in functional neuroimaging. \nWith grants from the Department of Defense and several private foundations\, she leads research on the neural bases of attention and the effects of mindfulness-based training programs on cognition\, emotion\, resilience\, and performance in education\, corporate\, elite sports\, first-responder\, and military contexts. \nIn her laboratory at the University of Miami\, she uses functional MRI\, electrophysiological recordings and behavioral techniques to understand why our attention sometimes fails us\, and if it can be trained for greater focus and less distractibility. She launched the first-ever study to offer mindfulness training tools to active-duty military service members as they prepared for deployment. What she has discovered is that without intervention\, attention is compromised\, and attentional lapses increase. Yet\, with mindfulness training\, attention can be strengthened and protected. \nIn addition to her own published body of research\, her work has been featured at TED\, NATO\, the World Economic Forum\, the Pentagon\, and the UK Parliament. Prior to his appointment at Berkeley\, he served as Director of the Federal Judicial Center in Washington\, DC (2011-2018)\, as a United States District Judge for the Northern District of California (1998-2011)\, and as a judge of the Santa Clara County Superior (1986-1998) and Municipal (1981-1986) Courts. He was the founding Directing Attorney of the Mental Health Advocacy Project from 1978 to 1981 and was a national leader in promoting access to justice for people with chronic mental health issues. \nJudge Fogel has taught for the Federal Judicial Center since 2002 and was a lecturer at Stanford Law School\, where he taught a course on the psychology of litigation\, from 2003 until his relocation to Washington in 2011. He taught for the California Continuing Judicial Studies Program (CJSP) and California Judicial College from 1987 to 2010 and served on CJSP’s Curriculum Planning Committee for six years\, including two as chair. He has served as a faculty member for legal exchanges on ethics\, case management and intellectual property in approximately twenty foreign countries. During his tenure at the Federal Judicial Center\, he oversaw the development of the Center’s first comprehensive\, integrated curriculum for judicial branch education. \nJudge Fogel was a member of the Committee on Financial Disclosure of the Judicial Conference of the United States from 2004-2011; he chaired the subcommittee that developed the original platform and procedures for electronic filing of annual financial disclosure reports and laid the groundwork for online public access. Panelists Lauren Anselowitz and Guadalupe Perez will discuss immigration detention and bond eligibility \nRegistration has closed. \nPresented by the Immigration Law Section \nPresenters\n \nLauren Anselowitz – Partner\, Harlan York & Associates\, Newark\, NJ \nLauren is a partner at Harlan York & Associates in Newark\, New Jersey. Named to Best Lawyers in America\, her most noted accomplishments include successfully arguing multiple cases under the Convention Against Torture before the U.S. Immigration Court. The Executive Office for Immigration Review reported that less than 1% of these cases are granted. Ms. Anselowitz also won oral arguments before the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals\, one step below the U.S. Supreme Court\, to vacate a deportation order for a client of the firm. \nIn recent years\, she has personally represented Harlan York & Associates clients at Immigration Court and Service Offices in New Jersey\, New York\, Connecticut\, Pennsylvania\, Massachusetts\, Virginia\, North Carolina\, Georgia\, and Florida. \nMs. Anselowitz has successfully resolved complex family and employment-based green card applications\, issues of citizenship\, and a number of different nonimmigrant visa petitions. Her experience includes H\, L\, E\, O\, and R visas. Additionally\, Ms. Anselowitz has worked extensively on applications under the Violence Against Women Act. \nMs. Anselowitz is an adjunct professor of Immigration Law in the Justice Studies Department at Montclair State University. She has lectured at Rutgers University School of Law and before the New Jersey State Bar and the Federal Bar Association. She was honored as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for four years. \nA graduate of North Carolina State University and Seton Hall Law School\, Ms. Anselowitz earned a Master of Arts Degree from the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations. She also attended the American University in Cairo\, Egypt\, and served in the field of international criminal law at the Special Court for Sierra Leone. She previously lived in Pretoria\, South Africa\, and has spent time in Botswana\, Zimbabwe\, Zambia\, Senegal\, the Gambia\, Ethiopia\, and Morocco. \nMs. Anselowitz is admitted to the Supreme Court of New Jersey\, the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey\, the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals\, and the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals. \n\nGuadalupe Perez – Public Defender\, Immigration Division at the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defenders\, Chicago\, IL \nGuadalupe is an attorney with the Immigration Division at the Law Office of the Cook County Public Defenders in Chicago\, Illinois. She represents individuals in detained removal proceedings before the Chicago Immigration Court and provides Padilla advisals to public defenders. Previously she was a supervising attorney with the National Immigrant Justice Center’s Detention Project where she represented individuals in removal proceedings and managed the Legal Orientation Program (“LOP”) which was located at McHenry County Jail in Illinois and the Kenosha County Detention Center in Wisconsin. Lupe also served as the co-chair of the AILA Chicago Chapter’s Legal Services for Detained Individuals Committee. Lupe graduated from DePaul University College of Law and is licensed in Illinois. Prior to law school\, Lupe was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Jordan. DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore the world of animals and how people with disabilities use them turns out to be deceptively complicated as there are numerous federal laws dealing with that question as well as state laws. Goren JD LLM LLC \nWilliam D. Goren\, Esq.\, of William D. Goren\, J.D.\, LL.M. LLC in Decatur\, GA\, has been dealing with the ADA as an Attorney since 1990. His law and consulting practice\, https://www.understandingtheada.com/\, as well as his blog\, Understanding the ADA\, (a member of the ABA Top 100 for five consecutive years\, 2014-2018- there was no ABA 100 in 2019-2021)\, all focus on understanding the ADA so that the client understands what it means to comply with that law and related laws. In particular\, he provides consulting\, counseling\, representation\, and training services involving compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act\, Rehabilitation Act of 1973\, and related laws- such as the Air Carrier Access Act and the Fair Housing Act\, among others. Mr. Goren also brings a deep\, personal understanding of what it means to have a disability\, equipping him with exceptional insight on how the ADA actually works. He is deaf with a congenital bilateral hearing loss of 65–90+ decibels\, but functions entirely in the hearing world thanks to hearing aids\, Bluetooth technology\, and lip-reading. For reasons independent of his deafness\, he also uses voice dictation technology to access his computer. He is also a frequent presenter\, a trained mediator\, a FINRA arbitrator (Chairperson eligible)\, and an arbitrator on the CPR employment panel. Finally\, he is the author of Understanding the ADA\, now in its 4th edition (ABA 2013)\, and numerous other articles on the rights of persons with disabilities. He is a member of various committees of the American Bar Association and is also a member of: the Federal Bar Association (FBA) Diversity and Inclusion committee; the FBA’s Civil Rights committee and its Governing Board; FBA’s Civil Rights Amicus committee; and the Chair of the FBA’s Working Group on Disability Best Practices\, which formulated an accessibility manual for the FBA and its chapters. He is also a member of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Bar Association and its lead for its Amicus committee. He has an A.B. from Vassar College\, a J.D. from University of San Diego School of Law\, and was one of the first in the entire country to receive the LL.M. in health law\, in his case from DePaul University College of Law.
