This webinar will feature an interactive discussion on bias and inclusivity in a seminar setting.  The objective is individual personal bias reconciliation with an introspective revelation of deep-seated beliefs\, impressions\, and notions of cultural differences among people. \n**This event does not offer CLE Credit** \n[Registration is now closed]\n  \n  \nPresented by the Federal Bar Association’s Federal Career Service Division. Cosponsored by the Diversity and Inclusion Standing Committee \nComments given by Mr. Durant are personal and do not reflect the policies or opinions of the US Department of Energy. \n\n\nPresenter\nColonel James M. Durant III  \nMr. Durant is a Career Member of U.S. Senior Executive Service. He had an illustrious career at U.S. Air Force retiring with a rank of Colonel. \nHe is the past Chair of the Chicago Federal Executive Board and the Senior Executives Association. \nHe publishes regularly and lectures internationally. Most recently\, he co-authored UN publication Responsible Leadership and gave a talk about it at the United Nations’ Palace De Nations in Geneva\, Switzerland. He is a Fellow of the United Nations endorsed Institute on Responsible Leadership\, \nMr. Durant leads a legal staff across the United States serving 11 of the 17 US National Laboratories handling management and operation contracts\, acquisitions and grants\, patent applications and licensing actions totaling over $8B annually.  He is a principle legal advisor to the DOE Office of Science and its Combined Service Center in Oak Ridge Tennessee.  His organization is comprised of a General Law Division and a Patent Law Division. \nDuring his military career\, he was appointed as a Judge Advocate\, Special Assistant United States Attorney (CA/TX)\, and an International Commissioner (Bosnia-Herzegovina).   A former NATO senior officer\, he deployed for OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and NORTHERN WATCH serving as the LEGAD (lead lawyer).  He is credited with leading six urban assault missions in Bosnia.  Additionally\, he was appointed Staff Judge Advocate 3 times\, and Deputy Department Head and Professor of Law at the US Air Force Academy.  He was also named the Strategic Initiatives Officer at the US Department of State\, where he authored the legal authority document for the United States to negotiate with Russia for START II.  He was the first military lawyer appointed to serve at the newly established Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Air Force Joint Space Operations Center.  In his last military assignment\, he was the Legal Director and Acting US Country Representative to Her Majesty’s Royal Government in the UK.  While in the UK\, he was the Boy Scouts of America’s District Commissioner over Scouts in the UK\, Finland and Norway; he was also the London Liaison to the ABA for the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta. \nMr. Durant is the Chair of Easter Seals–Joliet Region\, Chair of the ABA’s Retirement Fund\, and Chair of the ABA Young Lawyers Fellows. He is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a Fellow of the ABA Young Lawyers Division. Quinney College of Law (Moderator) \nArturo Thompson has served as the Dean of Career Development at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law since 2019. He has served in the same role at the University of Kansas School of Law\, his alma mater\, from 2011 to 2019. At the University of Utah his roles include his work in career development\, running the school Cutting Sign to the Legal Profession program for Native American students\, co-managing its Washington DC program\, and serving as a member of the school’s Professional Identity Formation Committee. Prior to working in law schools\, Thompson was an attorney focused on commercial restructuring work in Phoenix\, Arizona. He attended the University of Kansas School of Law from 2003 to 2006\, entering the program at the age of 34. Prior to law school Thompson was in marketing and communications\, working for everything from his own small agency in Tucson\, Arizona\, to a global tech company in Houston\, Texas\, to a subsidiary of one of the big global ad agencies in their Chicago office. Thompson was born in Arizona and grew up on a small family cattle ranch on the border with Mexico. He and his spouse\, Karen Ford Manza Thomspon\, have been married for 25 years and live in Salt Lake City\, Utah. His interests include travel\, cooking\, photography\, flyfishing\, and improving a rather poor golf game. \nChristina Hough\, Former 9th Cir. Representative and At-Large Member of the FBA’s Law Student Division Board \nChristina Hough has more than 22 years of experience in the legal field\, having worked as a senior paralegal and litigation secretary in small businesses\, large enterprises and law firms of varying sizes and specialties. She has extensive experience in general civil litigation matters. \nShe earned her bachelor’s in Public Administration from Southern New Hampshire University\, graduating summa cum laude and as a Distinguished Scholar with a 4.0 GPA. She received her paralegal certificate with honors in Generalist Curriculum from the University of San Diego Paralegal Program. She completed her first year of law school at the University of San Diego School of Law and studied abroad after 1L year in Madrid\, Spain. \nChristina was selected as the National Notary Assocition’s 2023 Notary of the Year\, for her volunteerism as an on-call notary public for the HIV/AIDS Division of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program and her willingness to meet notary clients where they are by\, for example\, traveling to rural Indian reservations where notary services are often unavailable. She also received the 2023 Affiliates Award from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) for her work on the San Diego Paralegal Association’s inaugural Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging Educational Conference\, which was held in September 2022. Christina was also recognized as a Woman of Influence in Law by the San Diego Business Journal in 2023. \nShe has served on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Paralegal Association for the past four years\, including three years on the Executive Committee and as a Vice President of Membership. She also volunteers her time on other boards and committees at various legal associations\, including the Federal Bar Association’s Law Student Division Board and the California Indian Law Association. \nPatricia Limón de Rodríguez: 5th Cir. Representative of the FBA’s Law Student Division Board \nHaving started her legal studies in January 2022\, Pati is a current second-semester 3L at South Texas College of Law Houston (STCL) and is geared to earn her Juris Doctor in December 2024 with recognition as a Pro Bono Honors Program Recipient and completion of the Texas Criminal Trial Advocacy Concentration Certificate. \nKeeping in line with a non-traditional path\, Pati sat for the July 2024 Uniform Bar Exam and is awaiting her results from the Texas Board of Law Examiners. Prior to law school\, Pati worked as the Director of Administration at Edge Creative Strategies\, while also working part-time as the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston (HisBA)’s Executive Director. \nDuring her time at Edge and HisBA\, she earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston\, where she graduated summa cum laude\, earning a 4.0 GPA. \nPati’s vast experience includes teaching Introduction to Paralegalism at San Jacinto College in Houston\, where she serves on the Advisory Committee for the School’s Paralegal Studies Program. During her time at STCL\, she established the University of Houston’s alumni student organization\, the Cougar Law Society and has served on the board of the Women’s Law Society. She recently completed her tenure as the Mountain Region Director of the National Latina/o Law Students Association and is the Criminal Law Committee Co-Chair for the Houston Young Lawyers Association. \nNurturing her love for learning languages and traveling\, Pati is fluent in Spanish and Hebrew\, with a proficiency in French and basic language knowledge of Arabic\, German and Russian. Last summer\, she attended two study abroad programs at Právnická Fakulta Univerzity Karlovy in Prague\, Czech Republic and the Academy of the Advocate in St. Andrews\, Scotland. \nMona Masha\, J.D.\, University of San Diego School of Law\, May 2024 \nMona Masha is a recent graduate of the University of San Diego School of Law\, where she earned her Juris Doctor in May 2024. As a non-traditional law student\, Mona brought a wealth of experience from her diverse professional background to her legal studies. Enrolled in USD’s part-time program\, she successfully balanced completing her degree over four years while working full-time. Mona served as the President of the Older Wiser Law Students (OWLS) organization\, where she advocated for and supported fellow non-traditional students.
