SUMMARY:Webinar: The International Legal Framework Relevant to Support Systems for Renewable Energy
DESCRIPTION:As renewable energy sources are more widely used\, the economic significance of the sector is also growing. The speakers will make a comparison between the USA and the EU and how these two entities approach the shift towards renewables from a legislative point of view. Mike Gatto – former four-term member of the California State Assembly and former chair of Utilities & Commerce – will forecast overall trends in California and USA\, will summarize where CA is going\, and speak with authority as a former policymaker in this area. Ruggero Arico is a former lawyer\, currently Head of International Institutional Affairs at Enel Group and has extensive experience in international relations\, governmental affairs\, energy and environment regulation and legislation. Mr. Arico will address the EU’s trends and current status quo. \nPresented by the International Law Section \n\nAbout the Presenters\nFederica Dell’Orto (Moderator) is the current Chair of the International Law Section of the Federal Bar Association. She has extensive experience in immigration\, international\, human rights law and in complex litigation matters. Ms. Dell’Orto has represented clients in Court during removal proceedings\, as well as in asylum\, bond\, cancellation of removal and adjustment hearings. She has also matured ample experience with appeals in front of the Board of Immigration Appeals and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Ms. Dell’Orto obtained her JD from the University of Milan in 2013 in EU Law and International Law. In 2016\, she completed an LL.M in Los Angeles\, in Public International Law and was then admitted to the California Bar. She is also admitted to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. \nMichael Anthony “Mike” Gatto is a lawyer and an American public official. First elected to the California State Assembly in 2010\, Mike Gatto served on the Banking & Finance committee\, presided over Assembly sessions as Assistant Speaker\, and chaired the Appropriations\, Consumer Protection & Privacy\, and Utilities & Commerce committees. As chair of Appropriations\, he determined billions in spending each year. As chair of Consumer Protection & Privacy\, he was involved in several innovative initiatives involving technology and cybersecurity. As chair of Utilities & Commerce\, he guided landmark utility and energy policy\, and regulatory reforms.  Along the way\, he developed substantial expertise in each of those subject areas. \nMike was also the author of several landmark pieces of legislation in his tenure – and a total of fifty-five measures he authored became law.  As a lawyer Mike has achieved successful outcomes in a number of high-stakes cases before the California Court of Appeal\, the California Supreme Court\, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals\, and the United States Supreme Court. He advises Fortune 500 companies and small businesses on how to navigate the halls of power\, and guides investors and analysts on the political and regulatory climate\, helping forecast trends that affect publicly traded companies. \nRuggero Aricò graduated in Law at the University of Messina\, Italy in 1999 and he was admitted to the Bar in 2002. He joined Enel in 2000 at the Institutional and International Affairs Department. In 2003\, he moved to Brussels to manage the institutional relations with the European Union\, in particular he worked very closely to the European Parliament. After 5 years\, he moved to Moscow as Head of External Relations for Russia & CIS Countries and in 2010\, he moved to Algiers as Head of External Relations for Algeria. In March 2016\, he became Head of Institutional Affairs for Europe\, Africa\, Asia and Oceania in Enel Green Power\, the biggest renewable energy private company in the world and currently since 2021 he is the Head of International Institutional Affairs of the entire Enel Group\, directly reporting to the CEO. \nRuggero has an extensive experience in international relations\, governmental affairs\, energy and environment regulation and legislation. He spent most of his life outside Italy\, he speaks fluently several foreign languages and he is often invited worldwide as visiting professor in universities and as conference speaker and moderator. \nHe is also Vice President of “Confindustria Assafrica & Mediterraneo” (the General Confederation of Italian Industry association for the development of Italian businesses in Africa\, the Mediterranean and the Middle East)\, Board Member of the Italia-ASEAN Association (the association that represents and supports Italian companies in all sectors with business interests in the ASEAN countries) and Member of the Coalition for Action Steering Committee at IRENA (the International Renewable Energy Association).\nHe has been appointed Vice President of “Disability Pride Italy”\, a non-profit organization that raises all issues that people with disabilities are facing nowadays and which organizes the Italian edition of the international event “Disability Pride”. \nIn 2020 he has been designated City of Messina Mayor’s Expert on Sustainability\, Innovation\, Smart City and Financial Innovative Tools.\nHe has become member of the B20\, the official G20 dialogue forum with the global business community (in 2021 he has been assigned to the Task Force “Action Council on Sustainability & Global Emergencies”\, in 2022 to the Task Force “Energy\, Sustainability and Climate”).\nMember of the Scientific Committees of “Taobuk – Taormina International Book Festival“\, “The Thinking Watermill Society Association” and “Mondo Internazionale”\, Sustainability Advisor of “Willow Thrive”\, Ruggero is also Political Advisor of TaoDust\, the only start-up company in the world that combines equity crowdfunding with asset tokenization bringing off-chain projects on the blockchain.\nRecently he has been appointed Board Member and Head of International Relations and Sustainability of the football club “ASD Città di Taormina”. \nHe is member of the Rotary Club\, where he received the highest honors “Paul Harris Fellowship”. \n\nRegistration\nRegistration for this event is now closed. \nRegistration Fees \n\nFBA Member: $0\nNonmember: $75\n\nLive Captioning: Closed captioning is available for all virtual webcasts. \nCancellation Policy: No refunds will be made for cancellations received after the close of business on February 9\, 2022. Prior to joining Kostelanetz & Fink\, she was a senior associate at PwC’s National Tax Office\, with their international tax practice. While a law student\, she completed tax externships with Jones Day and Kostelanetz & Fink. She was also a research assistant to Itai Grinberg\, the current deputy assistant secretary for multilateral tax at the Department of the Treasury. \nShe holds a Master of Laws degree in Taxation and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center\, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and History from Queen’s University. \nJacob Puhl\, Manager of Tax Policy at Meta (formerly Facebook) \nJacob is a Manager of Tax Policy at Meta\, formerly Facebook. He leads Tax Policy for the Middle East\, Africa\, and the US States. Based in Washington\, DC\, he serves as a liaison between business lines and tax functions to remove friction and anticipate challenges. His portfolio spans\nthe globe\, with a focus on promoting workable and consistent tax policy. \nBefore Meta\, Jacob was a Manager at Deloitte’s Washington National Tax practice focusing primarily on US Federal tax policy. He contributed to legislative updates for clients as well as advised foreign entities and embassies on U.S. policy matters. Prior to Deloitte\, Jacob served as a legal intern at the U.S. Treasury Department\, in the Office of the International Tax Counsel. Jacob also served as a law clerk with the tax team for the Senate Finance Committee. \nJacob received his LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center\, his J.D. from Ohio State University\, and his B.A. in Economics from University of Maryland – Baltimore County. \nDaniel Strickland\, Associate\, Eversheds Sutherland \nDaniel Strickland concentrates his practice in the area of federal and international tax controversy\, representing taxpayers in all types of tax controversy matters. Daniel guides clients through IRS audits\, prepares administrative claims and protests of IRS actions\, and litigates tax and tax-related cases throughout the United States. Daniel’s experience covers a wide range of complex tax issues\, including valuation\, foreign and energy tax credits\, classification of investment as debt or equity\, judicial substance doctrines\, and penalty defenses. \nPrior to joining Eversheds Sutherland\, Daniel served as a law clerk at the United States Tax Court for the Honorable Albert G. Lauber\, the Honorable Elizabeth Crewson Paris\, and the Honorable Michael B. Thornton. Daniel holds an LL.M in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center\, where he attended on a merit scholarship. \n \nDaren Gottlieb\, International Tax Senior Manager\, KPMG \nDaren is an International Tax Senior Manager in KPMG’s Washington National Tax practice and advises on a wide range of international tax issues\, for both multinational and private equity clients\, including foreign tax credits\, cross-border restructuring\, tax-efficient repatriation\, and tax treaty application. Daren has also focused his practice on helping clients navigate the implications of U.S. tax reform and the application of U.S. tax laws to transactions involving cryptocurrency/digital assets.\n \nTeisha Ruggiero\, IRS \nTeisha Ruggiero is an attorney with the IRS Office of Associate Chief Counsel (International)\, Branch 3. Before joining the Chief Counsel’s office in July 2021\, she worked at KPMG for seven years. While at KPMG she focused on the substantial statutory and regulatory changes to foreign tax credits and other international tax rules attributable to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. SUMMARY:Planning for the Next Phase of Your Career
DESCRIPTION:Albert Jacobs\, Chair of the FBA Senior Lawyers Division\, will present guidance to Sole Practitioners and Partners in Firms on how to plan for the next phase of their careers. He will offer both the attorney’s point of view and the analysis a Firm will do before committing to a candidate. The speaker has extensive experience in moving substantial-sized groups from one firm to another as well as substantial experience from the firm’s side\, as he was a member of management in several multinational firms. \nPresented by the Senior Lawyers Division \nRegistration is Closed \n\nPanelists\nAlbert Jacobs\, Chair\, Senior Lawyers Division \nWith more than 40 years of experience in every phase of Patent Law\, Mr. Jacobs has spent the last 30 years litigating Biotech\, Pharmaceutical\, and Medical Device Patents\, for multinational companies both before the Federal District Courts\, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC). He was the first of a group of attorneys to participate in the ITC’s first 100 Day Proceeding dealing with the issue of whether or not there was a Domestic Industry in the subject matter of the Patent. He was successful in proving there was not. He successfully sued a number of large well known foreign companies in one of the largest ITC cases ever filed when he brought an action against 44 companies. He has appeared before the CAFC from its outset and is the only attorney ever to invalidate a Patent for his client on an appeal from an improvidently granted Preliminary Injunction. Mr. Jacobs has participated in numerous Mediations both in the Federal Courts and in the ITC. He was appointed by the Secretary of Commence to a 3-year term on the Patent Public Advisory Committee. He is a Certified Mediator under New York State Statutes and has participated in a wide range of Domestic Family Matters. He has served as a coach for the Association of the Bar of the City of New York in their Mediation Program. A graduate of Harvard College and Columbia Law School where he was a Stone Scholar\, he is a member of numerous Bars as well as the Supreme Court of the United States.
