Like Robinson\, the first Black federal judges blazed a trail and left an indelible mark on our society. Decades of institutionalized discrimination had created a federal court system that Judge A. Leon Higgenbotham\, Jr. described as “both exclusionary and racially homogeneous.” During a time when segregation permeated nearly all aspects of American life—from schools to workplaces\, restaurants\, hotels\, public restrooms\, water fountains\, and swimming pools—nine Black Americans were able to overcome these barriers. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science\, the Academy of Management\, the American Psychological Association\, the Association for Psychological Science\, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology.  \n  \n \nMaya Roy\, Chief Deputy of Operations\, United States District Court for the Central District of California \nMaya Roy is the Chief Deputy of Operations for the United States District Court for the Central District of California.  Maya is a member of the senior management team reporting directly to the Clerk of Court/District Court Executive and is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Court’s operational functions.  Maya provides primary oversight of managers and supervisors and over 100 staff serving in the following areas: attorney admissions; appeals; civil/criminal intake; docketing; data quality; records; statistics; district and magistrate judge courtroom deputy clerks; jury; naturalization; ADR; and CJA. \nMaya began her legal career as a term law clerk with District Judge Virginia A. Phillips of the Central District of California after graduating from law school.  Following her clerkship\, Maya relocated to Sacramento and worked as a Staff Attorney and Race Equity Project Coordinator with Legal Services of Northern California where she assisted clients with housing and public benefits issues\, represented them in state and federal court\, and helped guide the firm’s race equity advocacy in the surrounding communities.  Following her time in northern California\, Maya returned to the Los Angeles area to join Asian Americans Advancing Justice where she was a Staff Attorney representing clients in workers’ rights and employment discrimination cases in state and federal court. \nMaya eventually returned to the Central District of California as a career law clerk\, then she was selected as the administrative law Clerk to the Chief Judge\, a position she held that spanned the terms of two Chief Judges\, Judge George H. Buchannan\, Detachment Chief\, Suspension & Revocation National Center of Expertise (S&R NCOE)\, U.S. Coast Guard\nLieutenant Commander Buchanan is the Suspension and Revocation NCOE Detachment Chief. In this capacity\, she leads a team of eight civilians and three military members to provide expert advice to field investigators and the Office of Investigations & Casualty Analysis (CG-INV) at Coast Guard Headquarters. While working for the police department\, he attended the University of Maryland School of Law\, graduating in 2000. SA Zavorotny practiced law for two years in a small firm in Towson\, Maryland specializing in corporate law. In 2005\, SA Zavorotny began working counterintelligence investigations\, and in 2008 was transferred to the FBI’s office in Bedford\, New Hampshire. \nSpecial Agent Courtney Pillsbury \nSpecial Agent Courtney Pillsbury graduated Boston College with a degree in Sociology and after 2 years as a paralegal went on to Boston College Law School. SA Pillsbury practiced at a large multi-national law firm in Boston for 5 years before joining the FBI in 2006. After graduating the FBI Academy\, she was assigned to the Los Angeles Field Office where she worked counterintelligence investigations for 9 years as both a case agent and supervisor. In 2015 SA Pillsbury transferred to the Boston Field Office to continue working national security violations. SA Pillsbury is a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT)\, a team of Special Agents and professional support staff responsible for the collection of evidence as crime scenes. She is also a member of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysist Program (BAP) where she has advised counterintelligence agents on various facets of their investigations based on the behavioral profiles of the subjects. \nSpecial Agent Chenee Castruita \nSpecial Agent Chenee Castruita has a degree in Journalism from Ohio University in Athens\, Ohio and a law degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. SA Castruita practiced personal injury law with a focus on workers compensation and medical malpractice for about three years. In 2017\, she moved to a defense firm and practiced insurance defense for over five years before joining the FBI in June of 2022.
