DESCRIPTION:Join the FBA’s International Law Section on August 30\, 2024\, from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm (ET)\, for a program that will include a “how to” with practical information on careers in international law that may make it possible to work in your field of passion and still be able to enjoy quality of life and earn a living. \nModerated by Lloyd Ocean\, the program speakers include George Kounoupis\, with law practice in the U.S. and Greece\, Carla Junqueira\, Carla Junqueira Trade Law\, Brazil\, Major Matthew Zellner\, U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General\, and Associate Justice Linda Strite Murnane\, speaking on United Nations Careers and layered public international law retirements. \nThis is a “can’t miss” program for young lawyers and law students. \nPresented by the International Law Section \n[Registration closed]\n  \nAbout the Presenters\n \nModerator: Lloyd Ocean \nLloyd Ocean currently serves as the Executive Special Projects Officer of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy where he supports the executive team with the strategic\, academic\, and operational goals. Lloyd is also a masters student focusing on international law and US foreign policy at Fletcher. Prior to this\, he was a Special Assistant Attorney General at the Rhode Island Department of the Attorney General (RIAG). There he was responsible for supporting the Civil and the Criminal Division’s administration of justice within the State of Rhode Island. Prior to joining the RIAG’s Office\, Lloyd worked as an Associate at the law firm Goodwin Procter LLP where he focused on business law matters\, particularly: capital markets\, mergers and acquisitions\, and real estate.  At Goodwin he devoted a significant amount of time to Pro Bono matters with an emphasis on assisting neighborhood businesses\, members of the LGBT community and veterans. As a US Army Officer of 9.5 years\, Lloyd has traveled across the world supporting the execution of large-scale logistics projects while connecting with and learning from an array of people and cultures. He has also worked to advance policy as a law clerk with the United States Senate Committee on Finance. Lloyd holds a law degree from Boston College Law School\, a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Boston University Questrom School of Business\, and is pursuing a masters focusing on international law at the Fletcher School. In his spare time\, he enjoys raw bars\, sharpening his language skills\, and time with\nfriends and family. \nCarla Junqueira \nCarla Junqueira is a Brazilian lawyer with 25 years of professional experience\, specializing in International Trade Law. She holds PhD degrees in Economic Law from both the University of São Paulo (USP) and the University of Paris I: Panthéon-Sorbonne\, as well as a Master’s Degree in Economic Law from the University of Paris I: Panthéon-Sorbonne. \nCarla’s expertise encompasses Trade Remedy Proceedings\, WTO Law\, Antitrust Law\, Compliance and Anti-Corruption\, customs procedures\, and regulatory cases. She is a professor of International Trade Law at Universidad de San Andrés in Buenos Aires and has authored numerous books and articles on international trade. Additionally\, she has extensive experience handling cases related to sexual abuse\, gender-based violence\, and matters governed by the Hague Convention. Carla serves as a legal consultant to the Brazilian Women’s Group and is the Center Leader of the Women of Brazil Group. \nThroughout her career\, she has provided pro bono assistance to numerous women victims of violence and has served as an expert witness in dozens of violence cases for Brazilian and Argentinean individuals before Brazilian Federal Courts. Carla’s accolades include listings in prestigious legal directories such as Chambers & Partners\, Latin Lawyer\, Legal 500\, Who’s Who Legal\, Best Lawyers\, and Practical Law. She is also on the Brazilian list of panelists for the WTO Dispute Settlement System. \nGeorge S. Kounoupis  \nGeorge S. Kounoupis is the founding partner of Hahalis & Kounoupis\, P.C.\, Greek Law Group with offices in PA\, NJ\, NY\, Athens\, Thessaloniki\, Greece. He has been a dually qualified lawyer (USA and Greece) since 1990 (PA Bar\, 1987; NJ Bar\, 1988; Athens Bar\, 1990). He has practiced USA-Greek Law and international and comparative law for over 37 years. Mr. Kounoupis is the first American lawyer to sit for and pass the Greek Bar. He has been admitted to the United States Supreme Court\, 3rd Circuit\, ED PA and\, DNJ Federal Courts\, PA Supreme Court\, NJ Supreme Court\, US Court of International Trade\, Athens Court of First Instance. \nEducation: Lehigh University (BA\, International Relations and Economics\, high honors\, 1984); Temple University Law School (JD\, 1987) (International Law Review\, Jessup Moot Court); Athens University Law School (courses leading to Greek law degree and passing final law school examinations for Athens Bar\, 1990). \nHe began his career as a business and securities lawyer for one of the largest USA law firms\, has been General Counsel for 2 NASDAQ companies\, as well as legal advisor to the Greek Orthodox Patriarch and Greek Embassy. He has numerous recognitions\, celebrity\, and international clients and he and the firm have over 100 million dollars in settlements\, judgments\, and verdicts in national and international litigation. He has written and lectured widely on international and Greek law\, being cited by major newspapers such as the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal and USA Today on Greek law has appeared on the Law Journal television program\, and has been a Co-Chair and Vice-Chair of ABA\, LAC and ABA SIL Section Greek Liaison. \n \nHon. Linda Strite Murnane \nLinda Strite Murnane currently serves as an Associate Justice on the High Court of the Republic of the Marshall Islands.  She served 29.5 years on active duty in the United States Air Force\, enlisting as an E-1 and retiring as the Chief Circuit Military Judge for the Eastern Circuit\, Washington\, D.C. as an O-6 (Colonel) in 2004.  Since retiring from the Air Force\, she spent eight years working in senior level positions with the United Nations at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and Special Tribunal for Lebanon\, and one year as the Senior International Attorney for the Defense Institute for International Legal Studies\, Newport\, RI.  She served two years as the Executive Director of the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights.  She also served as a felony prosecutor\, worked with Lexis-Nexis and was in private practice in the estate and trust field.  She is a past chair of the ABA Judicial Division\, and serves on the board of the FBA International Law Section\, the American Judges Association\, and the National Association of Women Judges (NAWJ).  She starts her term on the ABA Board of Governors in September 2024. \nShe has won numerous awards for her public service\, including the ABA Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement Award\, the ABA Mayre Rasmussen Award from the ABA International Law Section and the Ohio State Bar Association’s Nettie Cronise Lutes Award (both for advancing opportunities for women in the field of law)\, and the NAWJ Justice Vano Spencer and Judge Mattie Belle Davis Awards.  She has been inducted into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame and the Greene County\, Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. \nHer highest military decoration is the Legion of Merit. \nJustice Murnane assists veterans pro bono in applying for their VA benefits and also serves as the Mentor Coordinator for the ABA’s Afghan Legal Professionals Scholarship and Mentoring Program. \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMaj. Harpootlian\, P.A. \nRichard “Dick” Ara Harpootlian is one of South Carolina’s leading courtroom advocates with 30 years of trial experience as a prosecutor\, defense attorney\, and civil litigator. Mr. Harpootlian’s dynamic and persuasive advocacy style and record of success has earned him a reputation amongst South Carolina’s legal community as a lawyer who can get results. \nMr. Harpootlian began his career as a prosecutor in the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Within two years\, he was named Deputy Solicitor and tasked with the administration and supervision of over 20 prosecutors and staff members. As the Fifth Circuit’s chief homicide prosecutor\, Mr. Harpootlian personally prosecuted hundreds of murder cases\, including 12 death penalty cases. \nHe defended one of those convictions on appeal before the United States Supreme Court. In 1983\, Mr. Harpootlian earned a conviction in the prosecution of Donald “Pee Wee” Gaskins—South Carolina’s most notorious serial killer. Mr. Gaskins was sentenced to death. In 1990\, Mr. Harpootlian was elected as Fifth Circuit Solicitor\, winning by a margin of almost 2-1. He served from 1991 until 1995. As Solicitor\, he personally prosecuted and obtained convictions in a number of high-profile murder\, drug\, and public corruption cases. In 1991\, Mr. Harpootlian prosecuted and convicted ex-University of South Carolina President Jim Holderman for public corruption charges arising from the abuse of his office for personal gain. \nFor the last 20 years\, Mr. Harpootlian’s private practice has earned him state and national recognition for his efforts on behalf of civil litigants and criminal defendants\, including a number of multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements\, some of which are listed here. \nIn addition to his law practice\, Mr. Harpootlian has been active in South Carolina politics. He was popularly elected and served on Richland County Council from 1986 to 1991. He served as Chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2011 to 2013. During his first tenure as Chair\, the Party elected Governor James Hodges\, the first candidate to unseat an incumbent South Carolina governor\, and five other Democrats to statewide office. \nMr. Harpootlian’s views as a commentator on law and politics are regularly sought by national news programs. A towering intellect and a genius in court\, with the instincts of a street fighter.” Robbie has the distinction of being probably the only lawyer to have taken the deposition of former president Donald J. Trump twice in two weeks. \nRobbie recently led the legal team representing writer E. Jean Carroll in her sexual battery and defamation suits against Donald Trump\, securing $5 million and $83.3 million jury verdicts\, respectively\, on her behalf in cases where both juries reached their verdicts in less than three hours. \nSharon Nelles\, head of litigation at Sullivan & Cromwell\, is quoted in a profile explaining that Robbie “just sees things from a thousand different angles all at once\, it’s hard to keep up with her thought processes. She knows her law cold\, she knows the Constitution cold and she’s not afraid\, if she sees a problem\, to go figure out some law that’s going to allow her to fix it. She’ll find it.” Stephen Gillers\, professor at New York University School of Law\, told Bloomberg Law that Robbie is “a lawyer that you don’t want to see opposing you.” Another client describes Robbie as someone who “eats bullies for lunch.” \nThe Washington Post has described Robbie as “a brash and original strategist\, with neither a gift for patience nor silence\, a crusader for underdogs who has won almost every legal accolade imaginable.” Among the numerous honors and recognitions Robbie has received\, she was named to Forbes’ list of “America’s Top 200 Lawyers\,” recognized as the 2020 “Attorney of the Year” by the New York Law Journal\, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the New York Law Journal\, and has been honored as “Litigator of the Year” by The American Lawyer\, “Lawyer of the Year” by Above the Law\, and “Most Innovative Lawyer of the Year” by The Financial Times. Robbie Kaplan has been involved in some of the most important legal developments of recent years.” Robbie has consistently been listed as one of the top litigators and top women litigators in the country\, as well as one of the top lawyers in New York. \nCommercial Litigation \nRobbie represents clients in the tech\, fintech and financial services industries as both plaintiffs and defendants in their most complex legal challenges\, delivering a consistent track record of compelling advocacy\, creative arguments\, and winning results. \nWith respect to tech\, Robbie succeeded in obtaining a preliminary injunction for Airbnb on Fourth Amendment grounds\, blocking a New York City ordinance that would have required Airbnb to turn over massive amounts of data\, a prospect that posed significant privacy concerns. See Airbnb\, Inc. v. City of New York\, 373 F. Supp. 3d 467 (S.D.N.Y. 2019) (Engelmayer\, J.). She has also represented Uber in several cases involving significant business and privacy concerns posed by overly intrusive government regulation. Robbie recently secured a major victory for the Center for Countering Digital Hate (“CCDH”) in a lawsuit brought by X Corp. alleging that CCDH violated X’s terms of service in researching the prevalence of hate speech on the platform. As Judge Charles Breyer observed: “Sometimes it is unclear what is driving a litigation\, and only by reading between the lines . . . can one attempt to surmise a plaintiff’s true purpose. Other times a complaint is so unabashedly about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose. This case represents the latter circumstance.” X Corp. v. Ctr. for Countering Dig. Hate\, 23-cv-03836-CRB (N.D. Cal. Mar. 25\, 2024) \nRobbie has handled a wide variety of cases representing clients on Wall Street and in the financial services sector\, including matters involving “Special Purpose Acquisition Companies\,” or SPACs\, stock analysts’ recommendations\, market timing in mutual funds\, reinsurance transactions\, structured finance transactions and multi-level marketing companies. In the wake of the financial crisis in 2007\, Robbie represented Fitch Ratings in many dozens of regulatory investigations and civil litigations in both state and federal court relating to Fitch’s credit ratings of RMBS\, CDO\, and municipal bond transactions. She recently represented Pershing Square in a case challenging the legitimacy of SPACs. \nRobbie recently won at the Appellate Division First Department a motion staying a case in favor of arbitration in connection with litigation brought by Sean Combs against her client Diageo. Feb. 26\, 2021) (Furman\, J.). \nAs a result of these and other matters\, Robbie has decades of experience dealing with the complex interplay between regulatory investigations and the civil lawsuits that inevitably follow. \nShe currently represents Columbia in several matters filed under Title VI relating to events on campus since the attacks by Hamas on October 7\, 2023. Robbie also recently led the team that secured a dismissal with prejudice of all claims brought by student John Doe against New York University challenging NYU Law Review’s admission policy in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard (Doe v. N.Y. Univ.\, No. 23 Civ. 10515\, 2024 WL 2847368 (S.D.N.Y. May 30\, 2024)). When it comes to college sports\, in January 2021\, Robbie defeated a motion for a preliminary injunction seeking to require Brown University to restore its men’s and women’s squash teams to varsity status. Sterman v. Brown Univ.\, 513 F. Supp. 3d 243 (D.R.I. 2021). Robbie similarly secured a favorable settlement for Brown in high-profile litigation related to gender proportionality requirements in its athletics programs. Cohen v. Brown Univ.\, 16 F.4th 935 (1st Cir. 2021). Robbie was chosen by the NCAA to conduct a groundbreaking independent investigation into gender equity issues involving NCAA Division I Championships\, including the controversy that arose at the Division I women’s basketball championships in 2021. \nPublic Interest Matters \nThroughout her career\, Robbie has always had a deep-seated commitment to using the law to advance the public interest. She is perhaps best known for successfully challenging a key provision of the Defense of Marriage Act on behalf of her client Edith Windsor in the landmark case United States v. Windsor. Professor Laurence Tribe of Harvard Law School has observed that he could not “think of any Supreme Court decision in history that has ever created so rapid and broad a lower-court groundswell in a single direction as Windsor.” \nIn 2017 Robbie filed a high-stakes lawsuit against twenty-four neo-Nazi and white supremacist entities and leaders responsible for organizing the racial- and religious-based violence in Charlottesville in August 2017. In November 2021\, after a four-week jury trial\, Robbie and her team won a landmark $26 million verdict against the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who conspired to commit racially-motivated violence. Dahlia Lithwick\, in her bestselling book Lady Justice (Penguin\, 2022)\, devotes a chapter to Robbie’s work on the Charlottesville case. Robbie is also featured prominently in No Accident\, a powerful documentary chronicling the Charlottesville case from beginning to end. \nIn addition to serving as lead counsel for E. Jean Carroll in her two successful jury trials against Donald Trump\, Robbie recently reached a historic settlement agreement with the Florida State Board of Education\, Florida Department of Education\, and school districts that effectively nullified the most dangerous and discriminatory impacts of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. \nRobbie currently serves as counsel for New York’s Metropolitan Transit Agency in connection with nine separate lawsuits seeking to block\, on environmental and constitutional grounds\, the first congestion pricing program in the United States. \n*** \nRobbie is the author of the book Then Comes Marriage: United States v. Green was born and raised in Virginia Beach\, Virginia. The son of two military retirees\, he attended Hampton University on a 4-year scholarship through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Upon graduation\, Jordan commissioned into the Army Reserves as a Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General’s Corps. He obtained his law degree from The George Washington University Law School in Washington\, D.C. At GW Law\, he served as the National Vice Chair of the National Black Law Students Association\, overseeing the programming and day-to-day governance of a 6000-member national non-profit organization. Jordan was accepted into the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAGC) and accessed onto Active Duty in January 2019. \nCaptain Green currently serves as the Accessions Officer with the Army Judge Advocate Recruiting Office in Fort Belvoir\, VA. In this role\, he is directly responsible for the hiring and onboarding of all new JAGC attorneys on Active Duty. He most recently served as a Defense Counsel at Fort Liberty\, NC\, focusing primarily on defending Soldiers in federal court. His other legal assignments include: Military Justice Advisor\, Special Assistant United States Attorney\, and Legal Assistance Attorney with XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty\, NC. \nCaptain Green’s military awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (2nd award)\, the Army Achievement Medal (3rd award)\, the Armed Forces Service Medal\, National Defense Service Medal\, the Global War on Terrorism Medal\, and the Army Service Ribbon. Aneisha Bell\, Air Force Judge Advocate \nMajor Aneisha T. Bell received her commission into the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps through the Direct Appointment Program and entered active duty in January 2018.  While in law school\, she participated in the University of South Carolina School of Law Juvenile Justice Clinic.  She also interned at the City of Columbia City Attorney’s Office\, Richland County Public Defender’s office\, and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina interning for the Honorable Judge Margaret B. Seymour.  Since entering the JAG corps\, Major Bell has deployed in support of Operations Spartan Shield\, Inherent Resolve\, and Freedom’s Sentinel to Al Dhafra Air Base\, Abu Dhabi.  She is admitted to practice law in the State of Alabama. \nMajor Bell previously served as a Victims’ Counsel for District 2 of the Victims’ Counsel Division.  She was assigned to Tinker Air Force Base\, OK and provided victims’ legal counsel at McConnell Air Force Base\, KS.  In this role\, she was detailed to represent victims of crimes before military courts-martial as well as in administrative and civil legal matters. She graduated from the University of Texas in May 2009 with a BBA in International Business. While an undergraduate\, LT Blocker studied the European Union and lived in Germany for four months. In August 2009\, LT Blocker moved to Houston to attend law school at South Texas College of Law\, where she graduated with her JD in May 2012. \nShe then went on to private practice in Houston for four years. During her civilian career\, LT Blocker practiced in the areas of personal injury\, medical malpractice\, and commercial civil defense. \nLT Blocker joined RLSO Hawaii in December 2016 and completed the FTJA program in March 2019. While completing her trial rotation\, LT Blocker also served as the Navy Special Assistant US Attorney as well as the acting Professional Development Officer for RLSO Hawaii. \nLT Blocker joined Cryptologic Warfare Group SIX as their SJA from April 2019 to March 2022. She is now in charge of the Accessions\, Retention\, and Awards programs at OJAG Total Force Management. \nLt. Nedley Peyton\, Coast Guard Judge Advocate \nLieutenant Peyton Nedley serves as the Accessions & Resource Program Manager for the Coast Guard Legal Program (CGJAG)\, overseeing the Coast Guard’s legal recruiting and judge advocate accessions. She also holds a collateral duty as Military Aide to the Judge Advocate General and Chief Counsel of the Coast Guard. \nShe previously served as a staff attorney in the Office of Claims and Litigation\, where she was responsible for representing the Coast Guard in federal civil litigation nationwide in coordination with the Department of\nJustice. \nLieutenant Nedley joined the Coast Guard as a Direct Commission Lawyer in 2021. Abudu\, Judge\, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit \nNancy G. Abudu was confirmed as a Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit in May 2023. She is based in Atlanta\, Georgia. \nPrior to her appointment\, Abudu was a lawyer with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) where she served as the organization’s first-ever Deputy Legal Director for Voting Rights\, and then SPLC’s first Director of Strategic Litigation. Her responsibilities included overseeing all the organization’s legal programmatic work which\, in addition to voting rights\, included immigrants’ rights\, criminal justice reform\, children’s rights\, LGBTQ rights\, and special litigation related to hate groups. \nAbudu also spent almost 14 years with the American Civil Liberties Union\, first as a voting rights attorney with the national office and then as the legal director for the Florida affiliate. Her experience also includes being an associate with Skadden\, Arps\, Slate\, Meagher & Flom LLP in the firm’s New York office and working in the Eleventh Circuit’s staff attorney office early on in her career. \nHer civic activities have included serving on the Standing Committee on Election Law for the American Bar Association\, the ABA’s Taskforce on Building Public Trust in the American Justice System\, and the Advisory Committee for the National Voting Rights Institute\, as well as co- chairing the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys’ political participation committee and serving on the board of the Georgia Citizen’s Coalition on Hunger. \n \n\n\nDr. Clayborne Carson\, Professor of History\, emeritus\, Stanford University \nClayborne Carson\, Ph.D. is Martin Luther King\, Jr. Centennial Professor Emeritus and Senior Fellow\, Stanford’s Center on Democracy\, Development and the Rule of Law of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies\, Stanford University. \nDr. Carson has devoted most of his professional life to the study of Martin Luther King\, Jr. and the movements King inspired. Since receiving his doctorate from UCLA in 1975\, Dr. Carson has taught at Stanford University\, where he has served as Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Centennial Professor of History (now Emeritus). He has devoted his professional life to the study of Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, and the human rights movements inspired by King\, Mohandas K. Gandhi\, and other visionaries. \nHis award-winning first book\, In Struggle: SNCC and the Black Awakening of the 1960s\, was published in 1981 and remains the definitive study of the courageous activists and organizers who challenged the strongholds of segregation. In 1985\, Mrs. Coretta Scott King chose Dr. Carson to edit and publish a definitive\, multi-volume edition of her late husband’s speeches\, sermons\, correspondence\, publications\, and unpublished writings. \nIn addition to publishing numerous other books and scholarly articles\, Carson has also reached broader audiences as a senior advisor to the Eyes on the Prize series and his contributions to more than two dozen subsequent documentaries. After launching the online Liberation Curriculum for K-12 students\, Carson founded Stanford’s Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, Research and Education Institute in 2005 to disseminate King-related educational resources to a global audience. \nAfter retiring as the King Institute’s Director\, Carson has continued his online educational efforts by establishing The World House Project to collaborate with other human rights advocates to realize King’s vision of a global community in which all people can “learn somehow to live with each other in peace.” \n  \n \n\n\nSenator Doug Jones\, Counsel\, ArentFox Schiff\n \nIn 2017\, Doug Jones shocked the political establishment by winning a special election to fill a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama – the first Democrat to do so in the state in 25 years. As a member of the Banking and Housing Committee\, the Health\, Education\, Labor\, and Pensions (HELP) Committee\, the Armed Services Committee\, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee\, and the Committee on Aging\, he quickly built a reputation as a well-regarded and effective legislator. He passed more than two dozen bipartisan bills into law in just three years\, including legislation to end the military widow’s tax\, provide permanent funding for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs)\, shed light on Civil Rights-era cold cases\, and expand access to broadband in rural communities. He was also one of the principal architects of the anti-money laundering legislation passed by Congress as part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2020. \nSenator Jones began his career in 1979 as staff counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee for Senator Howell Heflin (D-AL). Following his stint in Washington\, Senator Jones served as an Assistant United States Attorney from 1980-1984. He left government service in 1984 and was in the private practice of law in Birmingham\, Alabama\, until President Bill Clinton nominated him to the position of United States Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate in November 1997 and he served as U.S. Attorney until June 2001. It was while serving in that position that Senator Jones successfully prosecuted two of the four men responsible for the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church that killed four young girls\, finally bringing full justice and closure nearly 40 years after the attack. Along with taking on the Ku Klux Klan\, he indicted domestic terrorist Eric Rudolph and prosecuted other criminals who sought to use fear\, hatred\, and violence to inhibit the rights of others. \nJones continued his push for civil rights while in the Senate.  He was the principal author of the Civil Rights Cold Case Commission Act which was signed into law and now fully operational.  He was also a co-sponsor of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act\, the Equality Act\, the Fair Pay Act and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.  Harkening back to the civil rights history in Birmingham\, Senator Jones started the annual tradition of having a bipartisan group of Senators read Dr. King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” on floor of the United States Senate.  He has received numerous awards and honors for his work on civil rights. \nBetween his time as U.S. Attorney and his election to the Senate\, Senator Jones was in the private practice of law\, handling white collar\, False Claims Act\, and security fraud class actions. He has represented multinational corporations\, small businesses\, and individuals in high-stakes civil and criminal litigation. \nSenator Jones is admitted to\, and practices law in\, Alabama. He has litigated dozens of appeals before the Florida Supreme Court\, Florida’s district courts of appeal and the U.S. Courts of Appeals in a wide variety of matters\, including medical malpractice\, premises liability\, insurance liability\, First Amendment and constitutional litigation\, family law\, state and federal administrative rule-making and regulation\, home rule authority and preemption\, election law\, civil rights\, land use and zoning\, intellectual property and labor and employment issues. \nEd’s clients span a diverse range of industries\, from a national supermarket chain to local governments. He works with each client to develop cost-effective litigation strategies that clarify and shape the law\, ultimately advancing their broader business goals. \nEd represented more than 40 city and county governments in defending a $200 million federal class action lawsuit involving red-light camera programs  across Florida. His successful strategy in numerous state court proceedings\, which culminated in a unanimous Florida Supreme Court decision upholding the legality of the programs\, led to a decisive dismissal of the class action. In another appellate victory\, Ed represented the manufacturer of the breath-alcohol testing instrument used in Florida in a legal battle over the company’s source code. Ed’s strategic approach to trial court and appellate proceedings led to a change in existing case law in Florida and establishing new precedent\, when the Florida Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision in his client’s favor. In another precedent-setting decision from the Florida Supreme Court\, Ed represented a national insurance carrier in establishing the carrier’s right through subrogation to pursue a malpractice claim against its insured’s retained counsel. \nEd is regularly quoted in the media on his high-profile cases. As a Fellow of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers\, he belongs to an exclusive group of only 350 attorneys who practice at the highest standards of appellate advocacy in the country. \n \nMelissa Patterson\, U. S. Department of Justice (Civil Appeals Division) \nMs. Patterson is an Assistant Director at the Appellate Staff of the Civil Division at the Justice Department.  She has represented the federal government as lead counsel in dozens of appeals in a wide range of civil litigation matters\, with a special focus on intellectual property\, administrative law\, and constitutional separation-of-powers issues\, as well as representing the United States in the Supreme Court while on detail as an Assistant to the Solicitor General.  Ms. Patterson is a member of the Federal Circuit Advisory Council\, and an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center\, where she teaches the Appellate Practice Seminar.  She served as a judicial law clerk to Judge Raymond C. Fisher of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  Ms. Patterson received her law degree from Harvard Law School\, and a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and a B.A. in English from the University of Southern California. \nAmanda Rice\, Partner\, Jones Day \nAmanda Rice is a partner in Jones Day’s Issues & Appeals practice.  She has argued in the U.S. Supreme Court\, as well as in most of the federal courts of appeals and a number of state appellate courts.  Her practice covers a broad range of substantive areas.  Recent matters have run the gamut from due process questions\, to arbitration issues\, to administrative procedure.  As the Detroit Office’s pro bono partner\, Amanda coordinates the office’s pro bono efforts and maintains her own active pro bono caseload\, with a focus on civil rights\, LGBTQ issues\, and immigration. \nAmanda has taught legal writing at the University of Michigan Law School and firearms law at Wayne State Law School. DESCRIPTION:The FBA Alternative Dispute Resolution and LGBTQ+ Law Sections\, in collaboration with the FBA Diversity and Inclusion Committee\, and the District of Columbia Chapter\, present the first-ever\, “Pride in ADR” event on Monday\, June 17th from 5:00-9:00 p.m. ET\, generously hosted by the law firm Sidley Austin in Washington\, D.C. and available in hybrid format\, remotely\, anywhere in the world. \n \nPride in ADR is a celebration of the LGBTQIA+ communities’ availability\, visibility\, and selection as professionals in the field of alternative dispute resolution and a conversation about some of the challenges which persist as well as those which lay ahead. The Hon. Ana C. Reyes\, U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia\, the first Hispanic woman and the first open LGBTQIA+ judge to be appointed to the D.C. federal district court\, will keynote. A panel discussion will follow\, featuring leading alternative dispute resolution practitioners who will share their experiences of coming to the ADR profession as members of the LGBTQIA+ communities including some of the risks\, rewards and considerations weighed at the intersection of privacy\, personal and professional concerns. District Court for the District of Columbia\, the first Hispanic woman and first open LGBTQIA+ judge at the D.C. federal district court in history \nJudge Reyes was appointed as a United States District Judge in February of 2023\, assuming the seat previously held by Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly. \nJudge Reyes served as a law clerk to Judge Amalya L. Kearse on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (2001).  After clerking\, Judge Reyes became a litigation attorney at Williams & Connolly LLP\, where she spent her legal career from 2001 to 2023.  While there\, she served as the co-chair of the firm’s International Disputes practice group and on its Executive Committee.  Her practice focused on international litigation\, representing foreign governments\, foreign government officials\, and multinational companies.  Judge Reyes also worked on patent\, legal malpractice\, and other complex civil litigation matters. \nJudge Reyes devoted substantial pro bono time to assisting refugees and organizations that assist refugees in obtaining asylum\, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Human Rights First. In 2016\, she received the Legacy Award from Unlikely Heroes for her successful representation of young women escaping persecution by a regional terrorist organization.  The Legal Times has recognized her as a “Champion” for her pro bono efforts (2009). \nIn 2023\, the Hispanic National Bar Foundation presented Judge Reyes with its “Judicial Leadership Award\,” which recognizes excellence in the legal profession.  While in private practice\, Judge Reyes earned accolades from The Legal 500 as a “Leading Lawyer” (2023) and “Next Generation Lawyer” (2020-2022) in International Litigation and from Benchmark Litigation as a “Local Litigation Star” (2019-2023).  The National Law Journal recognized her multiple times\, including on its Outstanding Women Lawyers list recognizing “the 75 most accomplished female attorneys working in the legal profession today” (2015); as an “Immigration Trailblazer” (2018); a Washington D.C. “Rising Star” (2014); and as a Minority 40 Under 40 (2011).  In 2017\, the Women’s Bar Association of D.C. named her as its “Woman Lawyer of the Year.” \nJudge Reyes was born in Montevideo\, Uruguay\, and grew up in Louisville\, Kentucky.  She received her J.D.\, magna cum laude\, from Harvard Law School (2000)\, her M.I.P.P.\, with honors\, from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University (2014)\, and her B.A.\, summa cum laude\, from Transylvania University (1996).  Along with her admissions to bars of the United States\, Judge Reyes was listed on the Roll of Solicitors in England and Wales.  Judge Reyes co-taught Advocacy in International Arbitration as a Clinical Visiting Co-Lecturer at Yale Law School (2018\, 2019) and co-taught Trial Practice\, Experts at Georgetown University Law School (2017). \nJudge Reyes is often joined in Chambers by her golden retriever\, Scout\, who obtained his own Juris Dogtor\, summa cum laude. \nBryan J. Branon is an international arbitrator\, mediator and business development strategist whose career has focused on the intersection of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and public policy. A former law clerk on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee\, U.S. Court of International Trade\, and intern in the Irish Parliament\, Bryan has worked for several leading ADR provider organizations where he helped establish the Afghanistan Centre for Commercial Dispute Resolution\, the Bahrain Chamber for Dispute Resolution and the International Mediation Institute. He is co-founder and co-director of UMindfulness\, the University of Miami’s Mindfulness Research & Practice Initiative\, and co-president of the Mindfulness in Law Society. \nProfessor Rogers is creator of Jurisight®\, one of the first CLE programs in the country to integrate mindfulness and the law and broke ground introducing neuroscience research along with contemplative practices in the legal context. For more than a decade\, Professor Rogers has been co-investigator on numerous grants involving neuroscience research exploring the enduring brain and behavior changes that may accompany mindfulness-training programs in high-stress\, high consequence professions. \nA nationally recognized leader in the field of mindfulness\, since 1992 Professor Rogers has taught mindfulness to thousands of legal professionals including lawyers\, judges\, law students\, judicial law clerks\, law faculty\, and mediators\, and\, he has introduced mindfulness to physicians\, parents\, firefighters\, accountants\, athletes\, business leaders\, financial advisors\, therapists\, and educators. He founded the Mindfulness in Law Joint Task Force of the Dade County Bar Association and Federal Bar Association (South Florida Chapter). In 2012 Professor Rogers was awarded the Sookie Williams/DBR Award for Exemplary Service to the Miami-Dade Legal Community\,” and in 2015 Professor Rogers was awarded the “Law Faculty Professionalism Award” by the Florida Bar’s Standing Committee on Professionalism. He is the 2018 receipt of the Mindful Kids Miami “Ambassador of Mindfulness” award for his more than 20 years of service sharing mindfulness with parents\, teachers\, and children. \nProfessor Rogers has published numerous law review articles and chapters and peer review scientific publications. He is the author of six books including “The Six-Minute Solution: A Mindfulness Primer for Lawyers\,” “Mindfulness for Law Students\,” “Mindful Parenting\,” “Mindfulness and Professional Responsibility\,” “Elements of Mindfulness\,” and the recently released “The Mindful Law Student: A Mindfulness in Law Practice Guide.” He lectures across the country\, speaks at law and scientific conferences\, appeared on television\, radio\, podcasts\, and has been interviewed in newspapers and magazines for his work on mindfulness. \nProfessor Rogers is columnist for the Florida Bar News and the ABA Journal where he authors the “The Mindful Layer” and the “Mindfulness 101” columns. His work at the University of Miami School of Law appeared in the Wall Street Journal\, and his research has been reported on in the New York times. Professor Rogers lives in Miami Beach. \nJavier Lopez\, Partner\, Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton\nJavier Lopez is a partner\, and co-chair of complex and commercial litigation. He served as Managing Partner of the firm throughout 2020 and 2021. Javier has particular expertise in both U.S. federal and state courts. He has represented many high-profile corporations and individuals in contract and business disputes\, commercial transactions\, and intellectual property matters. He has handled trials and appeals on both the state and federal levels. His recent verdict in a “bet the company” litigation that resulted in a six-week jury trial ended with one of the top ten largest jury verdicts in the State of Florida and one of the top 100 verdicts in the United States which was for almost $37 million. \nJavier handles some of the firm’s largest and most complex litigation matters. He has particular expertise in filing and defending claims involving businesses\, financial institutions\, accounting firms\, individuals and others for participation in fraudulent schemes\, breaches of contract\, breach of fiduciary duties\, defamation\, intentional infliction of emotional distress\, individual and class actions involving deception and false advertising\, and representing individuals and large companies in contract and shareholder disputes. Javier frequently serves as an attorneys fee expert as he is certified by the National Association of Legal Fee Analysis (thenalfa.org). He has a passion for civil rights and is frequently appointed by courts to represent the interests of the less fortunate against government entities and law enforcement. \nJavier is also humbled to have been appointed as Co-Lead Counsel to the Economic Loss and Property Damage Track in the Champlain Towers South Collapse Litigation\, in Miami-Dade County state court before the Honorable Michael Hanzman. This complex litigation\, in the aftermath of the devastating Champlain Towers collapse tragedy claiming 98 souls and 136 property units\, has been one of the most important and impactful cases of Javier’s career and garnered worldwide importance. The resolution of this matter with over $1.3 billion going to the victims was one of the highest settlements in the country in 2022. \nChambers USA has ranked Javier since 2021 for Litigation: General Commercial and described him as “a highly effective oral advocate” and “an experienced litigator who leads an excellent team.” As featured in The Miami Herald\, he was selected by peers as one of South Florida’s 2024 Top Lawyers. Florida Super Lawyers magazine named him a “Rising Star” from 2010-2020\, and as a “Super Lawyer” from 2022 forward. He was recognized as a “Rising Star” by the Daily Business Review and a “Top 40 Under 40” by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. He was elected to the Cuban American Bar Association’s Board of Directors in 2009\, and served as its President in 2017. Javier was honored as a Golden Angel for his support of the Jackson Memorial Foundation through JUNTOS\, the philanthropic foundation he co-founded. Since 2005\, he has been a member of the Harvard Alumni Association’s Interviewing Committee. He is also a Miami Art Studio (MAS) advisory Board Member. \nPrior to joining Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton\, Javier was a legal clerk in the White House Counsel’s Office where he was very involved in the vetting process for the replacement of then Chief Justice William Renquist. Javier also worked at the United States House of Representatives as part of the legal review team for new policy and legislation. \nJavier is very active in the South Florida Cuban community and charitable organizations such as the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Foundation (formerly Miami Children’s Hospital Foundation) and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program. He is an avid baseball fan having been a four-year letterman for Harvard University\, and enjoys collecting fine art and international travel. \nHon. Veronica Rossman\, Judge\, U.S. Court of Appeals – Tenth Circuit\nJudge Veronica S. Rossman was born in the former Soviet Union. In the mid-1970s\, she immigrated with her parents to the United States from Moscow as political and religious refugees. The family settled in the San Francisco Bay Area\, where Judge Rossman grew up. \nJudge Rossman received her BA in Comparative Literature (Spanish and Russian) from Columbia University. She received her JD from UC Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings)\, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly. \nJudge Rossman was a law clerk on the Nevada Supreme Court to Justice William Maupin (retired). She also served as a staff attorney for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. \nEarly in her career\, Judge Rossman worked for several years as a litigation associate with Morrison & Foerster LLP; she was based in the firm’s Washington D.C. and Denver offices. At the firm\, Judge Rossman specialized in appellate practice and antitrust work. She also spent several years as a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law\, teaching appellate writing and federal civil procedure. \nJudge Rossman spent the majority of her legal career as an Assistant Federal Public Defender for the Districts of Colorado and Wyoming\, where she was an appellate lawyer and served as Chief of the Appellate Section. Judge Rossman briefed and argued many cases to the Tenth Circuit\, never realizing she would one day sit on that court. \nIn May 2021\, President Biden nominated Judge Rossman for an opening on the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. She was confirmed to that position by the United States Senate in September 2021. The Tenth Circuit is based in Denver\, Colorado and reviews cases from Kansas\, Colorado\, New Mexico\, Oklahoma\, Utah\, and Wyoming. Judge Rossman maintains her residential chambers in Denver\, Colorado at the historic Byron White United States Courthouse. \nJudge Rossman is a board member of the Federal Judges Association. She is also the Chair of the Colorado Judicial Coordinating Council and the Chair of the Federal Bar Association Judiciary Division’s Article III Appellate Judges Committee. Hamilton)\n4075 Wilson Boulevard\, 8th Floor\nArlington\, VA 22203 \nA completed application consists of: \n\nThe Application for Admission to Practice: The first page should be filled out online\, completed in its entirety\, and printed. Do not use “all caps.” The second page may be filled out online and printed or handwritten (if legible).\nSignatures: All signatures must be original (wet) signatures from both sponsors and applicant on the same page.\n Attach a Certificate of Good Standing from each applicant’s state supreme court or highest court. Do not submit a\ncertificate from the state bar association or federal court. Only one state court certificate is required for each\napplicant.\n$200.00 admission fee\, via cashier’s check\, money order or personal check made payable to “Supreme Court of the United States” and postdated for May 30\, 2024.
