SUMMARY:Eastern District of Pennsylvania Chapter: Judicial Perspectives on Copyright Litigation
DESCRIPTION:Copyright litigation is\, in many ways\, similar to other litigation in federal court. But copyright cases can present unique challenges that warrant careful management\, such as the early adjudication of key issues like fair use or the availability of statutory damages and how to deal with cases in which the number of works or alleged infringements threatens to make trial unwieldy. This program will explore the litigation of copyright cases through the eyes of three federal judges sitting in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. DESCRIPTION:This webinar\, hosted by the Immigration Law Section’s Newer Lawyers Division\, features experts in the field of asylum to discuss changes that have occurred in recent years involving this area of law. Asylum law has seen massive changes\, and then reversions of some of these changes\, in ways that impact thousands of individuals seeking asylum\, and the panelists invited have been at the forefront of some of the litigation surrounding these changes. Topics to be discuss include changes in the law surrounding Particular Social Groups and work authorization for asylum seekers\, as well as the current “state of play” for asylum in United States. \nPresented by: Immigration Law Section \nRegistration is Closed \n\nPresenters\nBradley Jenkins\, Senior Litigation Counsel\, Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project \nBradley Jenkins is Senior Litigation Counsel at the Asylum Seeker Advocacy Project (ASAP). Bradley represents asylum seekers in ASAP’s strategic litigation. \nPrior to joining ASAP\, Bradley worked for the Catholic Legal Immigration Network\, Inc. (CLINIC). At CLINIC\, Bradley managed the BIA Pro Bono Project and litigated significant cases before federal courts\, the Board of Immigration Appeals\, and the Attorney General. \nBradley has been counsel is several significant cases advancing the rights of asylum seekers including: \n\nMatter of L-E-A-\, 28 I&N Dec. 304 (A.G. 2021)\, vacating an Attorney General decision that blocked people from asylum if their family was threatened;\nMatter of E-R-A-L-\, 27 I&N Dec. 767 (BIA 2020)\, vacated by Albizures-Lopez v. Barr\, No. 20-70640\, 2020 WL 7406164 (9th Cir. Dec. 10\, 2020)\, vacating a Board of Immigration Appeals decision suggesting that “typical families” and landowners could not be protected by the asylum laws;\nLM.-M. v. Cuccinelli\, 442 F. Supp. 3d 1 (D.D.C. 2020)\, declaring harmful anti-asylum policies to be void because the official who made the policies was unlawfully appointed; and\nMatter of Deang\, 27 I&N Dec. 57 (BIA 2017)\, setting a precedent that certain receiving stolen property offenses are not aggravated felonies that bar applicants from obtaining asylum or withholding of removal.\n\nBradley is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and Harvard Law School. He is a member of the Maryland bar. \nNeela Chakravartula\, Managing Attorney\, Center for Gender and Refugee Studies \nNeela Chakravartula is a Managing Attorney at the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies (CGRS).  Neela provides legal technical assistance and training to advocates\, and engages in litigation to protect the rights of asylum seekers. Neela additionally oversees the Center ‘s Experts Witness Database which connects advocates with expert witnesses in fear-of-return claims for relief. \nNeela came to CGRS after working for four years as a staff attorney at the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit\, where she researched and reviewed cases raising claims for asylum and related forms of relief. Neela also worked in New York City for three years\, representing clients in a variety of civil matters. DESCRIPTION:Senior District Judge William Alsup will share his insights and practice pointers on common mistakes made by counsel at trial\, with a special emphasis on cross-examination skills. \nView Flyer \nSpeaker\nSenior District Judge William Alsup\nUnited States District Court for the Northern District of California \nBorn in Jackson\, Mississippi\, Judge Alsup received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Mississippi State University in 1967\, a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1971\, and a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1971. \nJudge Alsup clerked for Justice William O. Douglas of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1971 to 1972. Judge Alsup was in private practice in San Francisco\, California from 1972 to 1978\, and was then an Assistant to the United States Solicitor General in the United States Department of Justice from 1978 to 1980. He returned to his private practice in San Francisco from 1980 to 1998 with Morrison & Foerster\, when he briefly served as a special counsel in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice in 1998. He was again in private practice in San Francisco from 1998 to 1999. \nOn March 24\, 1999\, Judge Alsup was nominated by President Bill Clinton to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California vacated by Thelton Henderson. Judge Alsup was confirmed by the United States Senate on July 30\, 1999\, and received his commission on August 17\, 1999. This in-person CLE luncheon will feature Judge Daniel P. Jordan III\, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi\, who will offer an update on current issues and happenings affecting the Southern District. Voting will also be held for the 2023 proposed slate of officers. \nThe buffet line will open at 11:30 a.m.\, and the program will begin at noon. \nSpeaker\nChief Judge Daniel P. Jordan III was nominated to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi by President George W. Bush on April 24\, 2006. He has served as chief judge since 2017.
