SUMMARY:Oklahoma City: Editing Humanity & Liberty’s Limits
DESCRIPTION:Description\nAlthough once the stuff of science fiction\, applications of gene-editing technologies are no longer improbable hypotheticals. Genetically modified humans are now among us. This presentation explores the constitutional issues raised by the applications of emerging gene-editing technologies through the arguments for and against the recognition of a fundamental right to edit humanity. \nIn her research\, Alexandra Foulkes Grafton\, J.D.\, M.S.\, combines her background in neuroscience\, law\, and bioethics to examine the social implications of emerging biomedical technologies in neuroscience and genomics. Her work on the legal implications of genomic technologies was recently selected for presentation at the Association of American Law Schools’ annual meeting and the North Carolina Law Review’s annual symposium. Ms. Grafton is currently serving as a term law clerk for the Honorable Timothy D. Cruz\, Esq. grew up in Hackensack\, New Jersey. She attended college at Temple University in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism\, Public Relations\, and Advertising. Tanishka earned her Juris Doctor from Drexel University\, Thomas R. Kline School of Law in Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania. As the daughter of immigrants from the Dominican Republic\, Tanishka has dedicated her legal career to the practice of immigration law. She was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 2014 and in 2015 she joined the Legal Aid Justice Center (LAJC) as a staff attorney under the Immigrant Advocacy Program. At LAJC\, Tanishka focused primarily on the management of the Virginia Special Immigrant Juvenile Project\, an award-winning collaboration between LAJC and pro bono attorneys across the state. The project has saved over 100 children from likely deportation. In 2016\, she won a LASSY award from the Virginia Poverty Law Center for greatest achievement in immigration law. \n \nSofia Lorenzo\, Esq. became an attorney with KIND in January 2016 and is currently a Senior Staff Attorney with the Washington\, D.C. field office. Prior to joining KIND\, Sofia worked as an immigration attorney with Northern Virginia Family Service in Falls Church\, Virginia\, and as a Washington College of Law-J.D. Distinguished Fellow with Ayuda in Washington\, D.C. Sofia received her J.D. in 2014 from the American University\, Washington College of Law. While in law school\, she received the Dean’s Award for Professional Responsibility for her work as a student attorney with the Immigrant Justice Clinic. As a law student\, Sofia interned with Ayuda\, the Legal Aid Justice Center\, and the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. DESCRIPTION:The US Supreme Court has recently decided a case that will have profound effects on bankruptcy and IP practitioners (Mission Products). In addition to this case\, the panel will be discussing other significant cases that SCOTUS and other courts have decided that effect these areas\, as well as specific substantive areas that impact both BK and IP practitioners\, such as sales free and clear of licensing agreements\, and the enforceability of covenants not to compete and franchise agreements. \nRegistration for this event is now closed. \n\nAbout the Presenters\nThe Honorable Alan S. Trust\, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Eastern District of New York \nThe Honorable Alan S. Trust ascended to the bench on April 2\, 2008\, and sits in the Eastern District of New York. He is an adjunct professor of law at the St. John’s University School of Law\, a past Chair of the Bankruptcy Law Section of the Federal Bar Association\, a member of the Board of Directors of that Section\, and has served as the CLE Committee chair. He is also President of the Eastern District of New York Chapter of the Federal Bar Association\, and serves as CLE Committee co-chair. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal\, is a coordinating editor for the Journal\, and for several years has had responsibility for the Dicta column. He is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges. \nDuring his tenure on the bench\, Judge Trust has been designated by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals to mediate cases in the Southern District of New York and to sit in the District of Connecticut bankruptcy court. Judge Trust also serves on the Judiciary Data Working Group under the auspices of the Administrative Offices of the United States Courts. \nJudge Trust is a frequent speaker and author for numerous CLE events and seminars\, addressing bankruptcy\, mediation and ethics issues. He is a trained mediator\, and was instrumental in the creation of a Pro Bono Mediation Program and the formation of the Consumer Lawyer Advisory Committee adopted by the Bankruptcy Court for Eastern District of New York. \nJudge Trust attended Syracuse University\, graduating summa cum laude in 1981\, and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He attended New York University School of Law\, where he served on the Law Review from 1982-83\, and graduated cum laude in 1984. After graduation\, he relocated to Dallas\, Texas to begin his law practice. Judge Trust opened his own law firm (Trust.Law.Firm\, P.C.) in Dallas in December 1995\, and managed that firm until appointed to the bench. \n  \nRobert J. Rando\, Founder and Lead Counsel\, The Rando Law Firm P.C. \nRobert J. Rando is the founder and lead counsel of The Rando Law Firm P.C. Mr. Rando is a Fellow of the Academy of Court-Appointed Masters and\, since 2004\, has enjoyed the privilege and honor of judicial appointment as a Special Master in numerous cases involving complex patent law issues. He has also served as a Mediator in several private mediations all with successful outcomes and as a Neutral in patent and non-patent cases. He is a published author and frequent lecturer at law schools and CLE programs on patent law and other IP and constitutional law issues. \nHis professional experience spans thirty years as a federal civil litigator in matters ranging from intellectual property and antitrust\, to employment discrimination\, civil rights\, employment disputes\, ERISA and class action product liability cases. Primarily his experience has been focused on the litigation of patent infringement disputes in the Southern District of New York (“SDNY”)\, the Eastern District of New York (“EDNY”) and several other United States District Courts across the country. He has also filed Circuit Court of Appeals briefs and argued before the Appeals Court for the Second Circuit. Additionally\, he has authored\, co-authored\, and filed Amicus briefs before the United States Supreme Court and Federal Circuit on numerous IP law issues from 2006 to the present. \nHe is experienced in a wide range of technologies\, including: computer hardware and software\, silicon chip manufacturing\, biotechnology products\, medical devices\, pharmaceuticals\, chemical compounds\, food additives\, alternative energy products\, consumer electronics\, communications\, security\, Internet and e-commerce. \nHe is the immediate past Chair and current Board Member of the Federal Bar Association (“FBA”) Intellectual Property Law Section (“IPLS”)\, an active Member of the FBA Government Relations Committee and Charter Member of the FBA EDNY Chapter. He is also the past Treasurer and current Board Member of the New York Intellectual Property Law Association (“NYIPLA”)\, an active member of the NYIPLA Amicus\, Legislative Action\, Programs and PTAB Committees\, a Member of The Federalist Society IP Practice Group Executive Committee\, Master in the Honorable William C. Conner Inn of Court and President-Elect of the Association of Amicus Counsel. \nHe has worked closely with USPTO leaders on programming and outreach and is actively engaged in federal judiciary legislative initiatives. Along with other patent practitioners\, he developed and conducted a series of lectures in 2012 on the AIA and provided a lecture on Alice/Mayo/Section 101 patent eligibility issues in 2018 for the SDNY and EDNY Patent Pilot Program Judges\, Magistrate Judges and Law Clerks. DESCRIPTION:The FBA Tax Section is excited to host a fireside chat with Gil Rothenberg\, former Chief of the DOJ Tax Division’s Appellate Section.  The conversation will be informal and fluid as we have no set agenda.  Rest assured\, Mr. Rothenberg has a wealth of relevant and interesting experience from his illustrious career upon which he will be drawing.  This is one call you don’t want to miss! \n\nAbout the Speaker\nMr. Rothenberg earned his B.A. (in Economics) from the University of Pennsylvania (1971)\, his J.D. from American University’s Washington College of Law (1975)\, and his LL.M. (in Taxation) from Georgetown University Law Center (1979). Mr. Rothenberg worked in the Justice Department’s Tax Division for his entire career\, starting out as a line attorney in the Division’s Appellate Section (where he handled\, among many others\, the landmark Tufts and Diedrich cases\, and more recently argued the Murphy and Cohen cases before the D.C. Circuit\, the latter en banc). For the last 15 years of his tenure\, until he retired in November 2019\, Mr. Rothenberg was Chief of the Tax Division’s Appellate Section\, overseeing a staff of approximately 50 attorneys and support personnel. Mr. Rothenberg is also an Adjunct Professor of Law at the American University’s Washington College of Law\, where for more than 30 years he has taught courses in individual\, corporate\, and partnership income tax. His publications include an article on tax deficiency procedures in The Virginia Tax Review\, later reprinted in abbreviated form in The Monthly Digest of Tax Articles\, and a chapter in the ABA’s 2009 publication entitled Careers in Tax Law. McGahn\, II is an American lawyer who served as White House Counsel for U.S. President Donald Trump\, from the day of Trump’s inauguration through October 17\, 2018\, when McGahn resigned. Previously\, McGahn served on the Federal Election Commission for over five years. \nHe briefly attended the United States Naval Academy before transferring to the University of Notre Dame.  At the University of Notre Dame he received a B.A. degree in history and computer applications.  He obtained his J.D. degree from Widener University School of Law in 1994 followed by an LL.M. degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2002. \nAfter graduation from law school\, McGahn worked in campaign finance law at the Washington\, D.C. office of law firm Patton Boggs. From 1999 to 2008\, McGahn was chief counsel for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC). \nGeorge W. Bush nominated McGahn as a Republican-selected member of the Federal Election Commission (FEC) in 2008. He was confirmed on June 24\, 2008 by the United States Senate and was sworn in shortly thereafter. \nAfter leaving the FEC\, McGahn returned to the law firm Patton Boggs. In 2014 he moved to the law firm of Jones Day in Washington\, D.C.
