He served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois and has served in special prosecutor or similar roles on several occasions\, including for the successful prosecution of actor Jussie Smollett in Chicago\, for which he was named Am Law’s “Litigator of the Week” in December 2021. \nDan’s trial practice concentrates in the areas of major commercial\, civil\, regulatory\, and white collar criminal cases. Among his jury cases are numerous successful complex commercial and white collar criminal trials\, representing\, on several occasions\, large corporations in jury trials lasting two months or longer. \nDan has spent his entire professional life as a courtroom trial attorney and litigator. As the U.S. Attorney in Chicago\, he spearheaded the “Operation Greylord” investigations into judicial corruption in Cook County\, Illinois. \nHe received national attention for his work as lead trial counsel for General Electric\, successfully defending it against criminal price-fixing allegations related to industrial diamonds\, as well as for his representations of Microsoft Corp. in its antitrust litigation; Philip Morris in its sprawling tobacco-related litigation; and Verizon in obtaining a US$58M verdict in a patent litigation matter. \nDan delivered a historic win for BPI in its defamation action against ABC News relating to a series of reports by ABC News in which its broadcasters referred to BPI’s product in a defamatory way\, leading BPI to massive financial losses. With BPI seeking over US$1.9B in actual damages\, the case has been widely reported as the “largest” and “one of the most significant” defamation cases in U.S. history. After weeks of putting on witnesses to prove ABC intentionally and knowingly made nearly 200 hundred false statements about BPI and its product and with our team about to put on damages witnesses\, the case settled. The settlement vindicated BPI and put the company on the path to recovery. \nA team of Winston attorneys\, led by Dan\, conducted an internal investigation at the New York Stock Exchange related to the compensation of its former Chairman and CEO\, Richard A. Grasso. Following Winston’s investigation\, summarized in what is now known as the “Webb Report\,” the New York Attorney General’s Office sued Grasso for the return of more than US$120M in compensation. \nOther successes for clients in securities matters include obtaining favorable settlements for Ernst & Young in a securities class action brought by stockholders of HealthSouth Corp. and for Cisco Systems in a securities class action brought by the Plumbers & Pipefitters National Pension Fund and obtaining summary judgment for Scientific-Atlanta in a securities fraud class action. \nOn the antitrust front\, Dan successfully represented Wyeth (Pfizer) against an antitrust class action relating to its patented potassium chloride product K-Dur®\, C.R. Bard against claims of anti-competitive conduct relating to sales contracts with group purchasing organizations for catheters\, and Monsanto against the antitrust claims brought by competitor DuPont relating to Monsanto’s patented Roundup Ready® weed killer. \nAs for other class action experience\, one of Dan’s most significant cases was for Philip Morris. He served as lead trial counsel in Engle\, et al. v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.\, et al.\, the first—and to date\, only—class action brought by cigarette smokers for punitive damages to be tried to verdict. He also served as chief trial counsel for Lexecon in another high-profile class action civil trial that resulted from the failure of Lincoln Savings\, the S&L institution owned and operated by Charles Keating\, Jr. \n \nHon. Richard E.N. Federico\, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit: \nRich Federico began his legal career serving as a Navy Officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG). He served on active duty from 2002 to 2015\, including tours of duty as a military prosecutor (Norfolk\, Virginia)\, the senior Navy prosecutor for Europe and Southwest Asia (Naples\, Italy; Bahrain)\, defense counsel for Guantanamo detainees charged with war crimes and being tried before military commissions (Washington\, DC; Guantanamo Bay\, Cuba)\, and as Officer in Charge of Navy defense offices (Jacksonville\, Florida). During these assignments\, he also served at sea and led investigation missions to Afghanistan and Korea. \nIn 2015\, Judge Federico left active duty and became an Assistant Federal Public Defender for the District of Oregon (Portland). While in Portland\, he tried several high-profile cases in district court\, litigated habeas petitions\, and argued before the Ninth Circuit. He transferred to the Federal Public Defender for the District of Kansas in 2017\, where he served until he received his judicial commission in 2023. Judge Federico continued to serve as a Navy JAG in the Reserves\, first as an appellate defense counsel and later as a military judge. He retired from the Navy in July 2024 at the rank of Captain. \nJudge Federico was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and received his commission from President Biden to serve as a Circuit Judge in December 2023. He assumed office and joined the Tenth Circuit on December 14\, 2023. He is the author of Kurzban’s Immigration Law Sourcebook\, the most widely used two-volume immigration source in the United States in its 19th Edition and he has lectured and otherwise published extensively in the field of immigration law\, including articles in the Harvard Law Review and Columbia University Press. Mr. Kurzban has practiced Immigration and Nationality Law for over 40 years and has won numerous awards for his work. He was the first recipient of the Tobias Simon Pro Bono Service Award presented to him by the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court for his work in protecting Haitian asylum seekers. He was selected as an Honorary Fellow by the University of Pennsylvania Law School for his work on behalf of refugees. He has been the recipient of the Wasserstein Public Interest Fellowship from Harvard Law School and in 2020 he received the Leonard J. Roy began her legal career through the Department of Justice Attorney General Honors Program\, as an Attorney Advisor at the Board of Immigration Appeals. Marty spearheaded HRC’s efforts to build and flex the political muscle of the LGBTQ community across the US\, playing pivotal roles in winning marriage equality in Hawaii\, Maryland\, New Hampshire\, New York\, Vermont\, and Washington states before marriage equality was secured nationwide by the US Supreme Court in 2015. He also led HRC’s successful effort to build grassroots support to repeal the discriminatory ‘Don’t Ask\, Don’t Tell’ military policy. \nMarty was born and raised on Long Island. He was the State LGBT Director of Bill Clinton for President\, worked on LGBTQ issues under NYC Mayor David Dinkins and Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger. In 1996\, the White House sent Marty to Vermont to run President Clinton’s re-election there. Over several years Marty helped elect dozens of fair-minded state legislators in the Green Mountain State. \nIn the Clinton Administration\, Marty worked for Fair Housing Assistant Secretary Roberta Achtenberg (our nation’s first openly LGBTQ+ Senate confirmed political appointee). At the US Dept. of Health and Human Services\, Marty worked under Cabinet Secretary Donna E. Shalala where he helped bring attention to the health disparities experienced by LGBT people. \nMarty graduated from the State University of New York at Stony Brook which included one year at Tübingen University\, Germany. He currently runs his own political consulting firm\, Catamount Consulting. The son of two military retirees\, he attended Hampton University on a 4-year scholarship through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Upon graduation\, Jordan commissioned into the Army Reserves as a Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General’s Corps. He obtained his law degree from The George Washington University Law School in Washington\, D.C. At GW Law\, he served as the National Vice Chair of the National Black Law Students Association\, overseeing the programming and day-to-day governance of a 6000-member national non-profit organization. Jordan was accepted into the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAGC) and accessed onto Active Duty in January 2019. \nCaptain Green currently serves as the Accessions Officer with the Army Judge Advocate Recruiting Office in Fort Belvoir\, VA. In this role\, he is directly responsible for the hiring and onboarding of all new JAGC attorneys on Active Duty. He most recently served as a Defense Counsel at Fort Liberty\, NC\, focusing primarily on defending Soldiers in federal court. His other legal assignments include: Military Justice Advisor\, Special Assistant United States Attorney\, and Legal Assistance Attorney with XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Liberty\, NC. \nCaptain Green’s military awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal (2nd award)\, the Army Achievement Medal (3rd award)\, the Armed Forces Service Medal\, National Defense Service Medal\, the Global War on Terrorism Medal\, and the Army Service Ribbon. Aneisha Bell\, Air Force Judge Advocate \nMajor Aneisha T. Bell received her commission into the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps through the Direct Appointment Program and entered active duty in January 2018.  While in law school\, she participated in the University of South Carolina School of Law Juvenile Justice Clinic.  She also interned at the City of Columbia City Attorney’s Office\, Richland County Public Defender’s office\, and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina interning for the Honorable Judge Margaret B. Seymour.  Since entering the JAG corps\, Major Bell has deployed in support of Operations Spartan Shield\, Inherent Resolve\, and Freedom’s Sentinel to Al Dhafra Air Base\, Abu Dhabi.  She is admitted to practice law in the State of Alabama. \nMajor Bell previously served as a Victims’ Counsel for District 2 of the Victims’ Counsel Division.  She was assigned to Tinker Air Force Base\, OK and provided victims’ legal counsel at McConnell Air Force Base\, KS.  In this role\, she was detailed to represent victims of crimes before military courts-martial as well as in administrative and civil legal matters. She graduated from the University of Texas in May 2009 with a BBA in International Business. While an undergraduate\, LT Blocker studied the European Union and lived in Germany for four months. Kearse on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (2001).  After clerking\, Judge Reyes became a litigation attorney at Williams & Connolly LLP\, where she spent her legal career from 2001 to 2023.  While there\, she served as the co-chair of the firm’s International Disputes practice group and on its Executive Committee.  Her practice focused on international litigation\, representing foreign governments\, foreign government officials\, and multinational companies.  Judge Reyes also worked on patent\, legal malpractice\, and other complex civil litigation matters. \nJudge Reyes devoted substantial pro bono time to assisting refugees and organizations that assist refugees in obtaining asylum\, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and Human Rights First. Veronica Rossman\, Judge\, U.S. Court of Appeals – Tenth Circuit\nJudge Veronica S. Rossman was born in the former Soviet Union. In the mid-1970s\, she immigrated with her parents to the United States from Moscow as political and religious refugees. The family settled in the San Francisco Bay Area\, where Judge Rossman grew up. \nJudge Rossman received her BA in Comparative Literature (Spanish and Russian) from Columbia University. She received her JD from UC Law San Francisco (formerly UC Hastings)\, where she served as Editor-in-Chief of the Hastings Constitutional Law Quarterly. \nJudge Rossman was a law clerk on the Nevada Supreme Court to Justice William Maupin (retired). Ms. Brook currently serves as co-lead counsel to the New York Timesin a groundbreaking copyright infringement action against Microsoft and OpenAI alleging that the companies illegally used millions of its articles to train ChatGBT. Ms. Brook also serves as co-lead counsel in a class action against PornHub parent company\, MindGeek\, over allegations that MindGeek violated federal sex trafficking and child pornography laws. SSA Harris started her career as a Special Agent with the FBI in 2004\, and her first assignment was to work public corruption and civil rights investigations in the Newark Field Office. SSA Harris has also worked temporary duty assignments in Iraq and at FBI Headquarters in Washington\, DC. She transferred to the Boston Field Office in 2015 wherein she worked health care fraud cases until she was promoted to be a Supervisory Special Agent in February 2018 as the Associate Division Counsel (ADC) for the Boston Field Office. Since December of 2022\, SSA Harris has been the Acting Chief Division Counsel (CDC). In her role as the ADC and CDC\, she assists employees and task force officers with legal\, compliance\, and ethical issues that arise during their investigations\, to include search and seizure\, free speech\, forfeiture\, and civil litigation. \nSupervisory Special Agent Alison Pauly \nSupervisory Special Agent Alison Pauly graduated from Duke University with a degree in Political Science and Russian language. After graduation she worked as a paralegal at a large New York law firm\, then as an advocate for victims of crime in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. SSA Pauly then earned a J.D. and a Masters in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. She started her legal career in intellectual property litigation in the San Francisco Bay Area at a large law firm. After a few years\, she shifted to federal employment at the United States Department of Labor and then the FBI. SSA Pauly has worked counterintelligence investigations in San Francisco\, Boston\, and as an FBIHQ Program Manager. While in Boston\, she also spent three years working public corruption investigations. SSA Pauly spent 10 years as a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT). She is also a member of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Program (BAP) where she consults with counterintelligence agents on investigations from the perspective of human behavior. SSA Pauly currently is the supervisor of a counterintelligence squad that includes FBI Boston’s Office of Private Sector (outreach) team. \nSpecial Agent Kyle Zavorotny \nSpecial Agent Kyle Zavorotny attended Johns Hopkins University\, and after graduating with a degree in psychology joined the Baltimore Police Department\, working as a patrol officer\, a detective in the department’s Fraud Unit\, and as a sergeant in patrol. While working for the police department\, he attended the University of Maryland School of Law\, graduating in 2000. SA Zavorotny practiced law for two years in a small firm in Towson\, Maryland specializing in corporate law. In 2002\, he joined the FBI\, and was assigned to the Boston Division\, working Health Care Fraud. In 2005\, SA Zavorotny began working counterintelligence investigations\, and in 2008 was transferred to the FBI’s office in Bedford\, New Hampshire. \nSpecial Agent Courtney Pillsbury \nSpecial Agent Courtney Pillsbury graduated Boston College with a degree in Sociology and after 2 years as a paralegal went on to Boston College Law School. SA Pillsbury practiced at a large multi-national law firm in Boston for 5 years before joining the FBI in 2006. After graduating the FBI Academy\, she was assigned to the Los Angeles Field Office where she worked counterintelligence investigations for 9 years as both a case agent and supervisor. In 2015 SA Pillsbury transferred to the Boston Field Office to continue working national security violations. She is currently the Applicant Coordinator and Recruiter in the Boston Field Office where she processes and tests applicants for the Special Agent position. SA Pillsbury is a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT)\, a team of Special Agents and professional support staff responsible for the collection of evidence as crime scenes. She is also a member of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysist Program (BAP) where she has advised counterintelligence agents on various facets of their investigations based on the behavioral profiles of the subjects. \nSpecial Agent Chenee Castruita \nSpecial Agent Chenee Castruita has a degree in Journalism from Ohio University in Athens\, Ohio and a law degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. SA Castruita practiced personal injury law with a focus on workers compensation and medical malpractice for about three years. In 2017\, she moved to a defense firm and practiced insurance defense for over five years before joining the FBI in June of 2022.
