SUMMARY:Northern District of California Chapter: Stress and Duress - Past and Present Challenges to the Judicial Branch
DESCRIPTION:Presidential speeches\, threats of (and actual) impeachment\, court packing plans\, and other efforts to diminish the role of judges all have been part of judicial history. Recently\, swatting\, pizza deliveries\, and unrestrained social media rhetoric have been added to the list. Join our distinguished panel as we look at historical and current challenges to the judiciary and their very real impact on judges and the rule of law. Is what we are experiencing now qualitatively or quantitatively different from what occurred in the past? And how has the quest for justice been affected? \n1.25 General CA & WA CLE Credit Available ($40) \nTo register\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Northern District of California: THE PORT CHICAGO 50: RACISM AND REVIEW - In-Person & Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Black History Month as we explore Extraordinary Stories You Might Have Missed! \nDuring WWII\, Black sailors stationed at Port Chicago\, CA\, were required to load munitions on ships with inadequate training and under supervision that stressed speed over safety. On July 17\, 1944\, cataclysmic explosions instantly killed 320 men (2⁄3 of them African American) and injured hundreds more. Unsafe conditions inspired hundreds of Black servicemen to refuse to load munitions\, an act known as the Port Chicago Mutiny. Fifty men—called the “Port Chicago 50″—received convictions from that Mutiny Trial that changed their lives. Join us for a reenactment of part of the Mutiny Trial followed by a discussion exploring how this event\, witnessed by Thurgood Marshall\, became a catalyst of the modern civil rights movement\, and about the ongoing efforts to seek the\nexoneration of the Port Chicago 50. \nThere will be a panel of speakers\, including Judge Haywood Gilliam\, who will read parts of actual testimony from the trials. \nIn-Person & Zoom \n[View Flyer] \nRegistration\nDeadline to register is February 24\, 2023\nRSVP: Register Online: \nRegistration Fees\n\nFBA Member: $25 In-Person & $25 Virtual\nNonmember: $65\n\nCLE\nCLE 1.5 \nThe above activity has been approved for Minimum Continuing Legal Education by the State Bar of California in the amount of 1.5 hour. \nIf you have any questions regarding this program\, please contact Randy Sue Pollock at rsp@rspollocklaw.com. \n
