(moderator) \nSharonda Williams serves as Special Counsel with Fishman Haygood following a distinguished career in public service and private practice. \nSharonda served as City Attorney for the City of New Orleans from May 2013-November 2015. As City Attorney\, Sharonda was the lead attorney handling the most comprehensive police consent decree in the history of the United States.  At the same time\, she represented the City in another consent decree aimed at reforming the Orleans Parish Jail\, which was then-recognized as one of the worst prisons in America.   Both of those consent decrees required Sharonda to engage in negotiations with the United States Department of Justice on a near daily basis.  Sharonda also was the lead attorney representing the City in settling a more than 30-year dispute relating to back pay and pension issues for the New Orleans Firefighters. SUMMARY:New Orleans Chapter: Admiralty Law CLE: The M/T ATHOS I – Meeting an Uncharted Object
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Orleans Chapter of the FBA Admiralty Law Committee for this CLE on \n\nDecember 15\, 2020\, from 12:00-1:00 p.m. CST on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nThe M/T ATHOS I departed Puerto Miranda\, Venezuela\, with a full cargo of Bachaquero crude oil destined for the CITGO refinery at Paulsboro\, New Jersey\, in the Delaware River. CITGO had a permit from the U.S. Corp of Engineers for a ship berth alongside the refinery. When the ATHOS I was in Federal Anchorage No. 9\, which adjoined CITGO’s berth\, it struck an uncharted/unknown/undetected object later discovered to be an anchor used by dredges to weigh down dredging pipes. The anchor ripped open the ship’s single hull and spilled heavy crude into the Delaware River\, resulting in the second largest ship-related oil spill in U.S. waters\, behind the Exxon Valdez. This is the story of that debacle\, which lasted from 2004 to 2020\, winding its way through Venezuela\, Greece\, Houston\, Philadelphia\, two trials with two different judges in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania\, two appeals to the Third Circuit\, a writ denied and a writ granted by the U.S. Supreme Court\, and oral argument in\, and a decision by\, the Supreme Court. \nMuch has been written about the legal aspects and issues surrounding this case\, so presenter\, Derek A. Walker\, Esq. with Chaffe McCall\, L.L.P.\, who was directly involved as counsel of record\, will share the facts\, evolution of the case\, strategies\, frustrations\, experiences\, anecdotes\, and memories – a gumbo of “war stories” and insights. \n\nAbout the Presenters\nDerek A. Guidry and Professor Holger Spamann present a CLE on The Art and Science of Judging. \nThis CLE will discuss the judicial decision-making process\, both from the perspective of an esteemed professor who has conducted research on the topic\, as well as that of a seasoned jurist now sitting on the federal bench. The panel will explore topics\, including how judges decide cases\, what personal experiences influence their rulings\, and how they approach and educate themselves regarding implicit bias\, as well as reforms aimed to promote impartiality and accountability in the judicial branch. \nThis CLE is free for all interested participants\, but is only pre approved for CLE credit in Louisiana. \n\nAbout the Presenters\nJudge Guidry is a two-time LSU graduate\, as well as a graduate of the National Judicial College\, who has an unparalleled perspective on the judicial process and judicial decision-making after seeing it from every from virtually every vantagepoint. Judge Guidry started his legal career in private practice before serving as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Louisiana and later becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Louisiana. Judge Guidry then started his tenure as a jurist in 2000 in the 24th Judicial District of Louisiana and has since served at every level of Louisiana’s judiciary\, including as a Justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court from 2009-2019 . In 2019\, Judge Guidry was appointed and confirmed to the bench of the Eastern District of Louisiana\, where he now serves. \nHolger Spamann is the Lawrence R. Grove Professor of Law at Harvard Law School\, where he teaches corporate law and corporate finance. His research focuses on judicial behavior\, as well as the law and economics of corporate governance and financial markets\, and comparative law. Before embarking on his academic career\, he practiced with Debevoise & Plimpton in New York and clerked for two years in Europe.
