DESCRIPTION:Webinar (via Zoom) \nModerator\nRobert Costa\, Chief Election & Campaign correspondent for CBS News\, co-author of the book “Peril” with Bob Woodward\, and former moderator and managing editor of “Washington Week” on PBS\, this can’t-miss event will feature four renowned leaders in the fields of First Amendment and media and entertainment law. The all-star panel will briefly situate the audience in foundational principles of First Amendment and defamation law and the anatomy of a libel lawsuit before diving into current trends in defamation litigation\, including the uptick in suits by public figures and high-profile individuals and the emergence of ideology-driven defamation suits. Tom has represented news organizations and journalists in a number of high-profile defamation cases\, including cases arising from the Mueller investigation\, the first impeachment of President Trump\, national security news coverage\, special forces raids\, viral videos\, gun control debates\, the use of child labor in international supply chains\, coal mine safety\, and public health issues surrounding the treatment and prevention of\n COVID-19. \nDavid McCraw serves as the lead newsroom lawyer for The New York Times. He has spent 21 years at The Times and currently holds the position of Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel. SUMMARY:Middle District of Pennsylvania Chapter: CLE - "Armed with Knowledge: Understanding New Developments in Second Amendment Law"
DESCRIPTION:The Middle District of Pennsylvania Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is proud to present the next installment of its acclaimed CLE series: a 1.5-hour hybrid program entitled “Armed with Knowledge: Understanding New Developments in Second Amendment Law” at Widener Commonwealth Law School in Harrisburg\, Pennsylvania\, on Thursday\, April 24\, 2025\, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The program will be followed by a reception. The Chapter will also offer a virtual/simulcast option for those unable to attend the program in person. \nThe program is approved by the Pennsylvania CLE Board for 1.5 substantive CLE credits. The cost of the program is $40. \nThe program will feature as panelists five experts in Second Amendment law with an array of perspectives: Judge Karoline Mehalchick\, District Judge\, Middle District of Pennsylvania; Chief Magistrate Judge Daryl F. Bloom\, Magistrate Judge\, Middle District of Pennsylvania; Professor F. Lee Francis\, Associate Professor of Law at Widener University Commonwealth Law School; Amanda Gaynor\, Staff Attorney at the Federal Public Defender’s Office\, Middle District of Pennsylvania; and Christian Haugsby\, Assistant United States Attorney\, Middle District of Pennsylvania. Moderated by Brad Paraszczak\, Staff Attorney at the United States Court of Appeal for the Third Circuit\, the panel will explore (1) the legal landscape in firearm regulation prior to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen; (2) Bruen\, its developing progeny\, and the theme of “dangerousness” in Second Amendment law today; (3) key cases challenging federal firearms statutes\, including 18 U.S.C.
