He was admitted to practice in Oregon in October of 2021 and has since been admitted to Washington State and the Federal District of Oregon. SSA Harris started her career as a Special Agent with the FBI in 2004\, and her first assignment was to work public corruption and civil rights investigations in the Newark Field Office. SSA Harris has also worked temporary duty assignments in Iraq and at FBI Headquarters in Washington\, DC. She transferred to the Boston Field Office in 2015 wherein she worked health care fraud cases until she was promoted to be a Supervisory Special Agent in February 2018 as the Associate Division Counsel (ADC) for the Boston Field Office. Since December of 2022\, SSA Harris has been the Acting Chief Division Counsel (CDC). In her role as the ADC and CDC\, she assists employees and task force officers with legal\, compliance\, and ethical issues that arise during their investigations\, to include search and seizure\, free speech\, forfeiture\, and civil litigation. \nSupervisory Special Agent Alison Pauly \nSupervisory Special Agent Alison Pauly graduated from Duke University with a degree in Political Science and Russian language. After graduation she worked as a paralegal at a large New York law firm\, then as an advocate for victims of crime in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. SSA Pauly then earned a J.D. and a Masters in Social Work at the University of Pennsylvania. She started her legal career in intellectual property litigation in the San Francisco Bay Area at a large law firm. After a few years\, she shifted to federal employment at the United States Department of Labor and then the FBI. SSA Pauly has worked counterintelligence investigations in San Francisco\, Boston\, and as an FBIHQ Program Manager. While in Boston\, she also spent three years working public corruption investigations. SSA Pauly spent 10 years as a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT). She is also a member of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Program (BAP) where she consults with counterintelligence agents on investigations from the perspective of human behavior. SSA Pauly currently is the supervisor of a counterintelligence squad that includes FBI Boston’s Office of Private Sector (outreach) team. \nSpecial Agent Kyle Zavorotny  \nSpecial Agent Kyle Zavorotny attended Johns Hopkins University\, and after graduating with a degree in psychology joined the Baltimore Police Department\, working as a patrol officer\, a detective in the department’s Fraud Unit\, and as a sergeant in patrol. While working for the police department\, he attended the University of Maryland School of Law\, graduating in 2000. SA Zavorotny practiced law for two years in a small firm in Towson\, Maryland specializing in corporate law. In 2002\, he joined the FBI\, and was assigned to the Boston Division\, working Health Care Fraud. In 2005\, SA Zavorotny began working counterintelligence investigations\, and in 2008 was transferred to the FBI’s office in Bedford\, New Hampshire. \nSpecial Agent Courtney Pillsbury \nSpecial Agent Courtney Pillsbury graduated Boston College with a degree in Sociology and after 2 years as a paralegal went on to Boston College Law School. SA Pillsbury practiced at a large multi-national law firm in Boston for 5 years before joining the FBI in 2006. After graduating the FBI Academy\, she was assigned to the Los Angeles Field Office where she worked counterintelligence investigations for 9 years as both a case agent and supervisor. In 2015 SA Pillsbury transferred to the Boston Field Office to continue working national security violations. She is currently the Applicant Coordinator and Recruiter in the Boston Field Office where she processes and tests applicants for the Special Agent position. SA Pillsbury is a member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT)\, a team of Special Agents and professional support staff responsible for the collection of evidence as crime scenes. She is also a member of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysist Program (BAP) where she has advised counterintelligence agents on various facets of their investigations based on the behavioral profiles of the subjects. \nSpecial Agent Chenee Castruita \nSpecial Agent Chenee Castruita has a degree in Journalism from Ohio University in Athens\, Ohio and a law degree from The Ohio State University in Columbus Ohio. SA Castruita practiced personal injury law with a focus on workers compensation and medical malpractice for about three years. In 2017\, she moved to a defense firm and practiced insurance defense for over five years before joining the FBI in June of 2022. SUMMARY:Webinar: Creating Diversity and Learning Opportunities through the Judicial Intern Academy
DESCRIPTION:Register today to learn about the Judicial Intern Academy (JIA)\, its effort to increase diversity\, and learning opportunities for law students. The JIA provides summer internships to rising 2L students who\, for personal or financial considerations\, are unable to devote their summer to a full-time\, 40-hour per week judicial internship. The JIA requires a commitment of 20 hours per week for 8 weeks in June and July. Students are given a weekly schedule that includes remote programming and in-person observations in federal and state court. The FBA has provided internships to more than 40 law students thus far through the JIA. In summer 2023\, nine local FBA Chapters and seven judicial districts participated\, and in 2024\, Judiciary Division leaders will work with FBA Chapter leaders and local judges to bring the JIA to even more districts and FBA Chapters. \n  \nPresented by the Judiciary Division & Law Student Division  \nRegistration is Closed \n\nAbout the Presenters\nJudge Beth Bloom\, Chair\, FBA Judiciary Division \nJudge Beth Bloom has been a United States District Judge for the Southern District of Florida since 2014. She previously served as a state trial judge in Miami-Dade County\, Florida for over 19 years. She is the current Chair of the FBA’s Judiciary Division and a Board Member of the Federal Judges Association. In 2021\, she created the Judicial Intern Academy in order to provide learning opportunities to law students who were unable\, for personal or financial reasons\, to devote their summer to a full-time federal judicial internship. In November 2022\, the Federal Bar Association adopted the Judicial Intern Academy as a national program\, and efforts are underway to expand the JIA to districts\, FBA chapters\, and law students across the country. \nJennifer Denker\, Partner\, Meehan\, Boyle\, Black & Bogdanow \nJennifer Denker is a partner at Meehan\, Boyle\, Black & Bogdanow\, where she handles a variety of different types of catastrophic injury and wrongful death cases including product liability\, wrongful death\, sexual assaults\, medical malpractice\, and motor vehicle collisions\, including a special focus on cases involving Uber or Lyft. Prior to joining Meehan & Boyle\, Jennifer completed a two-year federal clerkship in the United States District Court of Connecticut. Norman brings more than three decades of experience as an Assistant United States Attorney to help guide clients facing government False Claims Act investigations or other allegations of fraud or abuse of government programs. He is a member of the Health Care and FDA practice. Prior to joining the firm\, Norman served as acting U.S. attorney\, the chief federal law enforcement officer in the Eastern District of North Carolina. That office is responsible for prosecuting all federal crimes in the district\, including drug crimes\, violent crimes\, white collar fraud\, terrorism\, and public corruption. The U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) also represents the United States in civil court\, handling a wide variety of civil litigation. He previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney for more than 30 years\, focusing his practice on the investigation and civil prosecution of health care fraud and other fraud against the government. In this capacity\, he worked closely with the Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG)\, the North Carolina Medicaid Investigations Division (NC-MID)\, the Department of Defense Criminal Investigation Service (DCIS)\, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)\, the FBI\, and other law enforcement agencies. For 17 years\, he served as the Deputy Chief of the Civil Division\, where he both handled his own case load of civil fraud and health care fraud cases\, and supervisedas well as supervising all of the civil fraud\, health care fraud\, and False Claims Act cases for the Eastern District of North Carolina. He has received numerous awards and commendations from federal and state agencies in recognition of his collection of more than $100 million in connection with False Claims Act litigation. Quinney College of Law (Moderator) \nArturo Thompson has served as the Dean of Career Development at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law since 2019. He has served in the same role at the University of Kansas School of Law\, his alma mater\, from 2011 to 2019. At the University of Utah his roles include his work in career development\, running the school Cutting Sign to the Legal Profession program for Native American students\, co-managing its Washington DC program\, and serving as a member of the school’s Professional Identity Formation Committee. Prior to working in law schools\, Thompson was an attorney focused on commercial restructuring work in Phoenix\, Arizona. He attended the University of Kansas School of Law from 2003 to 2006\, entering the program at the age of 34. Prior to law school Thompson was in marketing and communications\, working for everything from his own small agency in Tucson\, Arizona\, to a global tech company in Houston\, Texas\, to a subsidiary of one of the big global ad agencies in their Chicago office. Thompson was born in Arizona and grew up on a small family cattle ranch on the border with Mexico. He and his spouse\, Karen Ford Manza Thomspon\, have been married for 25 years and live in Salt Lake City\, Utah. His interests include travel\, cooking\, photography\, flyfishing\, and improving a rather poor golf game. \nChristina Hough\, Former 9th Cir. Representative and At-Large Member of the FBA’s Law Student Division Board \nChristina Hough has more than 22 years of experience in the legal field\, having worked as a senior paralegal and litigation secretary in small businesses\, large enterprises and law firms of varying sizes and specialties. She has extensive experience in general civil litigation matters. \nShe earned her bachelor’s in Public Administration from Southern New Hampshire University\, graduating summa cum laude and as a Distinguished Scholar with a 4.0 GPA. She received her paralegal certificate with honors in Generalist Curriculum from the University of San Diego Paralegal Program. She completed her first year of law school at the University of San Diego School of Law and studied abroad after 1L year in Madrid\, Spain. \nChristina was selected as the National Notary Assocition’s 2023 Notary of the Year\, for her volunteerism as an on-call notary public for the HIV/AIDS Division of the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program and her willingness to meet notary clients where they are by\, for example\, traveling to rural Indian reservations where notary services are often unavailable. She also received the 2023 Affiliates Award from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) for her work on the San Diego Paralegal Association’s inaugural Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging Educational Conference\, which was held in September 2022. Christina was also recognized as a Woman of Influence in Law by the San Diego Business Journal in 2023. \nShe has served on the Board of Directors of the San Diego Paralegal Association for the past four years\, including three years on the Executive Committee and as a Vice President of Membership. She also volunteers her time on other boards and committees at various legal associations\, including the Federal Bar Association’s Law Student Division Board and the California Indian Law Association. \nPatricia Limón de Rodríguez: 5th Cir. Representative of the FBA’s Law Student Division Board \nHaving started her legal studies in January 2022\, Pati is a current second-semester 3L at South Texas College of Law Houston (STCL) and is geared to earn her Juris Doctor in December 2024 with recognition as a Pro Bono Honors Program Recipient and completion of the Texas Criminal Trial Advocacy Concentration Certificate. \nKeeping in line with a non-traditional path\, Pati sat for the July 2024 Uniform Bar Exam and is awaiting her results from the Texas Board of Law Examiners. Prior to law school\, Pati worked as the Director of Administration at Edge Creative Strategies\, while also working part-time as the Hispanic Bar Association of Houston (HisBA)’s Executive Director. \nDuring her time at Edge and HisBA\, she earned her Bachelor of Business Administration from Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston\, where she graduated summa cum laude\, earning a 4.0 GPA. \nPati’s vast experience includes teaching Introduction to Paralegalism at San Jacinto College in Houston\, where she serves on the Advisory Committee for the School’s Paralegal Studies Program. Enrolled in USD’s part-time program\, she successfully balanced completing her degree over four years while working full-time. Mona served as the President of the Older Wiser Law Students (OWLS) organization\, where she advocated for and supported fellow non-traditional students. As a lawyer with a decorated career in policy advocacy\, in addition to her work at Represent Justice\, Akiesha serves as a bar exam grader with the National Conference of Bar Examiners and The Alabama State Bar. Akiesha is originally from Montgomery\, Alabama yet currently resides in Southern California. She received her undergraduate degree in Sociology from Alabama State University in 2010\, a Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Auburn University Montgomery\, and a Juris Doctor degree (JD) with a certificate in governmental affairs from The University of Alabama School of Law. \nProfessor Catherine Bramble \nCatherine Bramble is an Associate Professor who teaches courses in advanced legal writing\, including Legal Writing Theory and Practice\, Advanced Legal Writing\, and the Substantial Writing Workshop. She also teaches Torts. \nProfessor Bramble graduated summa cum laude from the J. Reuben Clark Law School in 2005 where she served as an editor for the BYU Law Review and competed on BYU Law School’s National Trial Advocacy team. Following graduation from law school\, Professor Bramble worked as the Prelaw Advisor for BYU and then as the first Director of Preprofessional Advisement at BYU\, where she oversaw advisement for undergraduates applying to graduate law\, health\, and business programs. In 2008\, Professor Bramble joined MHM Law Offices in Provo\, Utah\, where she worked for eight years as a practicing attorney. \nProfessor Bramble joined BYU Law School in 2011 as a member of the Rex E. Lee Advocacy faculty\, teaching Introduction to Legal Research & Writing and Introduction to Advocacy. In 2019\, she was appointed the first Director of Academic Advisement and Development. During her time as director\, she taught Fundamentals of Legal Analysis and Strategies in Legal Analysis. For the 2022-2023 academic year\, Professor Bramble was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the S.J. Quinney College of Law at the University of Utah\, where she taught Torts\, Applied Legal Writing\, and Problem Solving & Analysis. \nSince 2020\, Professor Bramble has served as a member of the Utah Supreme Court Working Group on Attorney Licensure. Ms. Akers’ practice focuses on government enforcement actions\, internal investigations and complex civil litigation\, and she has extensive experience handling complex litigation in civil and criminal matters. \nPrior to joining Holland & Knight\, Ms. Akers served as a senior trial counsel in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Division and as a special assistant U.S. attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. After joining the Civil Division through the Attorney General’s honors program\, she led high-stakes litigation cases across multiple federal courts\, serving as first chair in numerous trials. Ms. Akers managed all aspects of pre-trial litigation\, including taking and defending depositions\, arguing dispositive motions on a broad range of procedural and substantive issues and conducting written discovery. She also led dozens of large-scale commercial fraud investigations and worked closely with federal law enforcement and regulatory agencies. \nIn addition to her civil practice\, Ms. Akers has investigated and tried a range of federal criminal cases\, including those involving the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)\, conspiracy\, wire fraud\, Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) conspiracy\, assault\, witness tampering\, obstruction of justice and domestic terrorism. She has managed complex e-discovery in highly sensitive cases and presented cases to federal grand juries. Ms. Akers has also handled international trade matters\, including litigating before the U.S. Court of International Trade\, and leading a high-priority DOJ task force to combat international trade fraud. She is an accomplished appellate lawyer who has argued 26 cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. \nIn addition to her legal practice\, Ms. Akers is a faculty lecturer at the DOJ’s Trial Advocacy Seminar\, one of the department’s premier training courses\, and the National Institute of Trial Advocacy\, widely recognized as the leading organization for training lawyers in courtroom advocacy.
