SUMMARY:Oklahoma City Chapter: The Osage Reign of Terror: A Legal Perspective CLE
DESCRIPTION:Join the Oklahoma City Chapter of the Federal Bar Association at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Oklahoma on Tuesday\, May 21st\, from 2 p.m to 4 p.m. for a comprehensive legal exploration of pivotal historical events\, as Assistant U.S. Attorney Arvo Mikkanen and Former Osage Nation Congresswoman and Osage Nation Supreme Court Judge Shannon Edwards shed light on the captivating narrative of the “Osage Reign of Terror\,” with a special emphasis on the legal intricacies depicted in the acclaimed book and major motion picture “Killers of the Flower Moon.” \nOur discussion will commence with an in-depth examination of the forced displacement of the Osage tribe from their ancestral lands to the Indian Territory. As we transition to Oklahoma’s statehood\, our focus will center on the legal complexities arising from the discovery of oil and gas resources within the Osage Nation\, including the intricate regulatory landscape governing allotment and reserved oil and gas headrights. \nPrepare to delve into the nuanced jurisdictional challenges that have emerged between state and federal authorities. We will meticulously analyze the legal dimensions surrounding the tragic murders of esteemed Osage tribal members\, such as Henry Roan and Anna Brown\, perpetrated by William K. Hale and John Ramsey in their exploitation of tribal assets under the headright system. \nOur discussion will also feature a comprehensive review of the subsequent federal investigation led by the Bureau of Investigation\, the precursor to the FBI\, as well as the intricate legal proceedings encompassing the trials and appeals of William K. Hale and John Ramsey within the Western District of Oklahoma federal court. \nFurthermore\, we will address pressing legal considerations regarding the re-establishment of the Osage tribal government\, the intricacies of Osage headrights ownership\, and ongoing jurisdictional disputes involving state\, federal\, and tribal entities within the historic Osage Reservation. Gain invaluable legal insights into the complexities surrounding litigation pertaining to the boundaries of the Osage Reservation post-McGirt. Don’t miss this unparalleled opportunity for comprehensive legal analysis and discourse! \nCLE credit pending
