A licensed Minnesota attorney with a background in education leadership\, he holds a J.D. from Mitchell Hamline School of Law and a doctorate in education. He is a past-national President and former General Counsel of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and is a Fellow of the American Bar Association. He has litigated over hundred federal cases concerning the rights of aliens\, including Jean v. Nelson\, Commissioner v. Jean\, and McNary v. Haitian Refugee Center\, Inc.\, which he argued before the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Kurzban is an adjunct faculty member in Immigration and Nationality Law at the University of Miami School of Law. He is the author of Kurzban’s Immigration Law Sourcebook\, the most widely used two-volume immigration source in the United States in its 19th Edition and he has lectured and otherwise published extensively in the field of immigration law\, including articles in the Harvard Law Review and Columbia University Press. Mr. Kurzban has practiced Immigration and Nationality Law for over 40 years and has won numerous awards for his work. He was the first recipient of the Tobias Simon Pro Bono Service Award presented to him by the Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court for his work in protecting Haitian asylum seekers. He was selected as an Honorary Fellow by the University of Pennsylvania Law School for his work on behalf of refugees. He has been the recipient of the Wasserstein Public Interest Fellowship from Harvard Law School and in 2020 he received the Leonard J. Theberge Award for Private International Law from the American Bar Association. \nMartin Rosenow is a Miami-based immigration attorney and a partner at Rosenow Taramasco P.A. Inspired by his grandfather\, a prominent immigration attorney\, Rosenow continues a family legacy in the field\, advocating on behalf of clients in a wide range of employment- and family-based immigration matters. \n  \n  \nSusan G. Roy began her legal career through the Department of Justice Attorney General Honors Program\, as an Attorney Advisor at the Board of Immigration Appeals. She became an Assistant Chief Counsel and National Security Attorney for the Department of Homeland Security\, Immigration and Customs Enforcement\, in Newark\, NJ. From 2008-2010\, she served as an Immigration Judge\, also in Newark. Sue then entered private practice and is a solo practitioner specializing in complex criminal immigration cases and federal litigation. Most recently\, Sue has become the Managing Attorney for the Seton Hall Law School Center for Social Justice’s Detention\, Deportation\, and Defense Initiative. Sue is the former Chair of both the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) NJ Chapter and the NJ State Bar Association Immigration Law Section. She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Municipal Court Practice Section and has been a member of the NJSBA Legislative Committee for several years. In 2024\, Sue has been awarded the AILA Sam Williamson Mentor Award. In 2023\, she received the NJSBA Distinguished Legislative Services Award. Sue has been a guest lecturer at many area law schools\, and has taught as an adjunct professor at Rutgers Law School\, University of DC Law School\, and Mercer County College. She is on the faculty of the Immigration Trial Advocacy College and Vecina\, two pro bono organizations that train litigation attorneys in trial advocacy skills. In addition\, she has authored articles in the NJ Law Journal and the AILA Law Journal\, among others. Sue is a member of the Round Table of Former Immigration Judges\, and\, through the Round Table\, has been involved in over 70 amici briefs before SCOTUS\, the federal courts of appeal\, the NJ Supreme Court\, the Board of Immigration Appeals\, and more. As a Round Table member\, in 2019\, she was awarded the AILA Advocacy Award of the Year.  She has been a speaker and/or moderator for many NJSBA conferences\, in the areas of immigration\, municipal court practice\, ethics\, LGBTQ+ rights\, school law\, and more. She has presented at numerous AILA national\, regional\, and local conferences\, as well as the NYSBA\, the Federal Bar Association\, the American Bar Association\, the Mercer County Bar Association\, the Practicing Law Institute\, and many others. \nRebecca Sharpless is a faculty member of the University of Miami School of Law\, where she is the founding director of the Immigration Clinic and teaches immigration law. With her clinic students\, Professor Sharpless represents indigent noncitizens in removal proceedings and engages in litigation in U.S. district court and before the U.S. courts of appeals. Her award-winning book published by the University of California Press\, Shackled: 92 Refugees Imprisoned On ICE Air\, examines our immigration enforcement system through the stories of two Somali men who were shackled for two days on a botched 2017 ICE Air flight. He has been with the office since July 2011. Kyle’s practice focuses on defending claims of constitutional or civil rights violations brought against the State of Utah\, its agents\, agencies\, and subdivisions\, and Utah colleges and school districts. Kyle is also appointed as a judge pro tempore for the Salt Lake City Justice Court\, presiding over civil small claims matters. Before working for the Utah AG’s Office\, Kyle was employed as Staff Attorney for Justice Dale Wainwright of the Supreme Court of Texas\, where he not only assisted Justice Wainwright in researching and preparing opinions and analyzing petitions for review\, but was in charge of the Court’s annual hot pepper eating competition. Before that\, Kyle was a litigation and intellectual property associate with the law firm of Winthrop & Weinstine\, P.A. in Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, and served as a law clerk for Richard Dorr\, United States District Judge for the Western District of Missouri\, in Springfield. Kyle received his J.D.\, with high distinction\, from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2003\, where he was Senior Managing Editor of the Iowa Law Review\, was awarded the Hancher-Finkbine Medallion\, and was inducted into Order of the Coif. Kyle received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Drake University\, summa cum laude\, in 2000. Away from work\, Kyle enjoys spending time with his wife Pearl\, their daughter Cora\, and their cat Milo; camping around Utah in a 1983 Chevy RV; competing in pub trivia events (mostly virtually this year); playing percussion with the local community band and piano in the privacy of his own home; and judging mock trial competitions. \n Lauren DiMartino \nLauren DiMartino is an attorney at Brown\, Goldstein & Levy representing clients across various areas of civil rights law\, including fair housing\, education and disability rights\, and LGBTQ+ rights. Her practice also includes appeals and commercial litigation. Lauren clerked for Judge Martha Craig Daughtry on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. She was previously the Legal Fellow at the University of Colorado School of Law’s Byron White Center for the Study of American Constitutional Law. She graduated from the City University of New York School of Law\, a public-interest program\, with a concentration in Social Justice\, Equality\, and Civil Rights. She is active in community work\, and is on the Board of Directors of FreeState Justice\, the Advisory Board of Baltimore Youth Arts\, teaches Appellate Advocacy at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law\, and serves on the Baltimore City Office of Inspector General Citizen Advisory Board. Lauren is admitted to the bar of the states of New York\, Maryland\, and New Jersey. \nRobin Wagner \nRobin Wagner is the Principal and Founder of Robin Wagner Law\, PLLC. She works exclusively on plaintiff-side civil rights matters\, primarily in the areas of employment and housing discrimination. She spent 9 years at a prominent plaintiff-side civil rights law firm in the Detroit area\, rising to equity partner\, before founding her own firm. She clerked for the Hon. Judith E. Anna previously served in a variety of FBA roles including as Chair of the FBA Membership Committee and the FBA Younger Lawyers Division. \n \nDavid Brody\, Partner\, Sherin and Lodgen LLP \nDavid Brody is a partner in Sherin and Lodgen’s award-winning Employment Department. A member of the firm’s Executive Advocacy Team\, Brody represents individuals in a wide range of matters\, including contract negotiation and enforcement\, wage and hour issues\, wrongful termination\, discrimination\, retaliation\, and whistleblowing. Mimi Tsankov (Ret.) (Moderator) \nMediator/Arbitrator/Neutral \nJudge Mimi Tsankov is a certified mediator/arbitrator in New York City currently serving on the JAMS Labor Panel\, and the American Arbitration Association Labor Panel. Since retiring from the Federal Government\, she serves on a wide range of State panels throughout New York. For nearly two decades\, she served as a judge in the federal administrative judiciary\, prosecuted cases on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Peace Corps\, and worked over 10 years in private law practice. She’s been recognized both at the court and throughout various legal organizations for her work as a judge and as a leader in the international legal community\, holding multiple elected and appointed roles for decades in leading organizations\, including the ABA\, the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers\, Judicial Council 2 (a national labor organization affiliated with the AFL-CIO)\, the Federal Bar Association\, and the National Association of Women Judges. She’s received multiple ABA Presidential Appointments to the UN Representatives Department of Global Communications\, and is currently Immediate Past Chair of the ABA’s Judicial Division’s National Conference of the Administrative Law Judiciary. She’s a Board Member of the City Bar of New York’s Commercial Law Section\, and an Affiliate Board Member of its ADR Section. She is a member of multiple chapters of the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA). In the labor field\, she’s contributed to ongoing labor-related discussions by testifying before the Judiciary Committees of both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives\,  meeting regularly with Congressional leaders\, publishing numerous articles in legal periodicals and in a variety of law journals\, serving on national and international panels (U.S.\, Canada\, and Europe) speaking with members of all major media outlets (print\, TV\, film\, and radio)\, and by producing podcast stories. SUMMARY:Webinar: What Does Accessibility Mean? Nuts & Bolts /Decoding Website Accessibility: What Every Attorney Needs to Know
DESCRIPTION:**Program hosted in (ET) Time Zone** \nDigital accessibility has become a rising area of litigation\, affecting businesses across nearly every industry. Attorneys are now on the front lines of advising clients\, responding to claims\, and interpreting complex technical evidence tied to website accessibility. During this session\, attendees will engage with two nationally recognized consulting experts as they break down what makes a website truly “accessible” under ADA Title III and explain how the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are applied in practice. The presenters will highlight common compliance pitfalls\, explain the different layers of guidance in WCAG (including its structure of principles\, guidelines\, and testable Success Criteria\, as well as WCAG versions and levels)\, share real-world examples that illustrate common issues\, and explain the role that consulting experts play in disputes involving website accessibility.\n \nSave the Date!\nPresented by FBA’s Civil Rights Law Section \n\nPresenters\n \n Mike Silverman\, Digital Accessibility Strategist. \nMichael Silverman is a digital accessibility strategist\, consultant\, advisor and expert\, highly experienced in website/product accessibility and compliance with ADA Title III and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). He has 20 years of professional work experience helping state governments\, startups\, small and mid-sized businesses\, and Fortune 500 companies to develop ADA-compliant accessibility programs\, targeted remediation plans\, and documentation that can withstand regulatory and litigation scrutiny. Drawing on his vast experience\, Mr. Silverman has been retained as a digital accessibility consultant and expert witness by both plaintiff and defense attorneys to evaluate digital accessibility claims\, assess legal exposure\, build credible records grounded in verifiable facts and provide expert testimony. To date\, Mr. Silverman has consulted on more than 140 digital accessibility cases across a wide range of sectors\, including healthcare\, hospitality\, professional services\, automotive and mobility\, real estate and property management\, retail and consumer brands\, entertainment\, transportation and travel\, and technology (AI platforms and Software-as-a Service (SaaS) products). His work includes structured audits\, expert declarations\, responses to opposing experts\, and assistance with trial preparation. His testimony focuses on methodology\, technical accuracy\, and how the evidentiary record aligns with alleged harm and legal exposure. Mr. Silverman holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and a Master’s degree from Northern Illinois University with a specialization in assistive technology. He is a Certified Professional in Accessibility through the International Association of Accessibility Professionals. \n \nPeter Bossley\, President\, Accessibility Ally Inc \nPeter Bossley is President of Accessibility Ally Inc\, which provides digital accessibility consulting and expert services across a variety of industries in the public and private sectors. With 19 years of technology experience across information technology and digital accessibility roles\, he brings significant experience in this space. He has been both a consulting and testifying expert in state and federal courts. Peter previously led large-scale digital accessibility efforts at The Ohio State University\, having had institution wide responsibility for digital accessibility compliance programs. He is a Certified Professional in Web Accessibility by the International Association of Accessibility Professionals. \n \nJessie Weber\, Partner\, Brown\, Goldstein and Levy\, LLP (Moderator) \nJessie Weber is Managing Partner at Brown\, Goldstein & Levy\, LLP (“BGL”)\, where she works on a range of civil litigation matters nationwide\, with a focus on disability rights\, fair housing\, workplace justice\, and appellate litigation. She has successfully litigated and resolved cases involving accessible technology and document formats\, voting rights for individuals with print disabilities\, access to health care and educational opportunities\, and employment discrimination. She currently represents blind students and the National Federation of the Blind in litigation against the Los Angeles Community College District\, and obtained a jury verdict finding LACCD violated plaintiffs’ rights under Title II of the ADA by denying them an equal educational experience\, including through the use of inaccessible technology\, and awarding the individual plaintiffs more than $240\,000 in damages—a verdict recently reinstated by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Ms. Weber was also part of the legal team advocating for coverage of websites and mobile applications under the ADA in Robles v. Domino’s Pizza\, LLC\, first through successful advocacy to the Ninth Circuit\, resulting in a published decision clarifying that public accommodations must make their web and mobile services accessible now and cannot wait until the DOJ issues website-specific regulations\, and later by obtaining an order from the trial court holding that Domino’s violated the ADA by maintaining an inaccessible website and requiring Domino’s to make its website accessible. Before joining BGL\, Ms. Weber was a Francis D. Murnaghan\, Jr. Appellate Advocacy Fellow at the Public Justice Center where she worked on issues affecting marginalized communities. Before that\, she served as a law clerk for Judge Catherine C. Blake of the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. She serves as president of the board of Disability Rights Maryland and previously served on the boards of the ACLU of Maryland and FreeState Justice.
