SUMMARY:Webinar: Leaving Government Employment: Ethics Issues for Lawyers
DESCRIPTION:This program will discuss both the federal statute and the ethics rule restricting post-employment work by former federal employees.  It will address the differences between the statute and the ethics rule and as well as the common features of both.  The program will address how a former federal employee can navigate the similar but not identical restrictions under the federal statute and the ethics rule.  With respect to the latter\, the program will focus on the D.C. version but mention the differences between it and the ABA Model Rule. \nPresented by the Federal Career Service Division and the Senior Lawyers Division. \nFor questions regarding this program\, please contact MyLaw CLE by email: registration@mylawcle.com or phone: 877-406-8636. \n\nAbout the Presenters\n \nTom Mason\, Partner\, HWG\nThomas B. Mason represents lawyers and law firms on professional responsibility and ethics matters\, including malpractice\, disqualification\, disciplinary investigations and prosecutions\, partner admissions and departures\, and law firm dissolutions. Tom’s disciplinary experience includes matters before the USPTO’s Office of Enrollment and Discipline (OED) as well as numerous state bars. He also counsels and advises lawyers and law firms in all of the above areas so as to avoid problems or disputes before they arise. Thomas was named Washington\, D.C.\, Ethics and Professional Responsibility Lawyer of the Year for 2014\, 2017\, 2019\, and Legal Malpractice Law – Defendants Lawyer of the Year for 2018 and 2023 by Best Lawyers. He has served as an expert in ethics and related issues on numerous occasions. Prior to private practice\, Thomas worked for the Federal Public Defender for the District of Maryland\, where he represented clients in a wide variety of cases\, including espionage\, civil rights\, mail and wire fraud\, and controlled substance prosecutions. He went on to join the District of Columbia Public Defender Service where he had an intensive criminal trial and appellate practice. Thomas is a member of the D.C. Bar’s Global Legal Practice Committee and a past member of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility. Thomas served on the D.C. Bar Legal Ethics Committee from 2006 to 2012\, including three terms as Chair from 2009 to 2012. Thomas also served on the D.C. Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review Committee from 2002 to 2008 and then again from 2013 to 2020\, including terms as Vice-Chair and Chair. During his tenure\, the Committee adopted the most extensive revisions to the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct since the D.C. Bar adopted the Rules in 1991. Thomas speaks and writes frequently on ethics and malpractice matters. He is a frequent speaker at the D.C. Bar and has also spoken before various sections of the American Bar Association\, the Practising Law Institute\, the American Law Institute and a number of other bar and industry organizations. He has written on topics such as non-lawyer partners and multiple “of counsel” relationships with different law firms. Thomas has taught ethics and professional responsibility at the Georgetown University School of Law from 2008 to 2016 and has taught various subjects at the National Institute of Trial Advocacy\, Columbus School of Law at Catholic University and American University’s Washington College of Law. \nHope Todd\, Associate Director Legal Ethics\, Regulation Counsel\, District of Columbia Bar\nHope C. Todd oversees the legal ethics program at the District of Columbia Bar. Since 2006\, Ms. Todd has provided legal ethics guidance through the Bar’s Ethics Helpline on the interpretation and application of the D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct. She regularly teaches ethics CLEs and serves on panels for local and national audiences. Ms. Todd is a contributing author for the “Speaking of Ethics” and “Ask the Ethics Experts” features of the Washington Lawyer. She is staff counsel to the D.C. Bar Rules of Professional Conduct Review and Legal Ethics Committees. Ms. Todd is a former member of the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility (2014-2017) and served as the SCEPR liaison to the ABA Commission on the Future of Legal Services. She is a member of the National Organization of Bar Counsel (NOBC)\, the ABA Center on Professional Responsibility\, and the Association of Professional Responsibility Lawyers (APRL). Before joining the D.C. Bar in 1998\, Ms. Todd was in private practice in New York. SUMMARY:Immigration Law Section: Alternatives to H-1B
DESCRIPTION:The H-1B lottery is over\, and with the majority of registered individuals not selected\, many companies and foreign nationals are searching for alternative statuses and options. Join the Immigration Law Section’s Newer Lawyers Division for a discussion on alternative pathways for cap-subject H-1Bs\, and those who may be maxing out of H-1B status. Speakers will review and discuss alternative pathways for individuals and methods companies may use to keep their employees on-board and work authorized through a variety of means.\n\n\nPresented by the Immigration Law Section \n\n\nPresenters\nAmber Blasingame\, Partner\, Messner Reeves LLP\n \nAmber L. Blasingame focuses on immigration law in business\, family\, and humanitarian matters. Ms. Blasingame has worked in immigration law since 1995\, including managing the immigration team in the US and Canada for one of the “Big 4” account firms’ multi-national consulting practice and as a licensed immigration attorney since 2011. Ms. Blasingame earned her law degree from the University of Denver\, where she was a senior staff editor on the Denver University Law Review\, participated in the DU asylum clinic\, and received a scholastic excellence award in advanced immigration law. Ms. Blasingame has successfully represented clients before the US Departments of Labor\, State\, Justice\, and Homeland Security\, including the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)\, and the Executive Office for Immigration Review\, Board of Immigration Appeals\, and Board of Alien Labor Certification Appeals\, and is admitted to practice in the US District Court\, District of Colorado. She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and has served on the Colorado AILA Chapter Annual Conference and New Members committees. Ms. Blasingame is also an active member of the El Paso County Bar Association (EPCBA) in Colorado and served as secretary\, treasurer\, and trustee on the EPCBA Board of Trustees and founding member of the Immigration Law Section. She is also an active member of the Colorado Women’s Bar Association (CWBA) and served as El Paso County Chapter President and State Liaison. Ms. Blasingame has written articles to the Colorado Bar Association periodical\, The Colorado Lawyer\, and contributed to the CBA Immigration Law for the Colorado Practitioner as a chapter-editor. She has been recognized by Colorado Springs Style Magazine as one of the top immigration law attorneys in Colorado Springs\, Colorado. \n\n\nLeigh Alpert\, Partner\, Battan Alpert Hutchings LLP \n\n\nLeigh has practiced immigration law since 2012. She has been selected to the Colorado Rising Stars List from 2018 – 2023\, a peer designation awarded to no more than 2.5 percent of attorneys in Colorado. In 2023\, Leigh was selected by 5280 Magazine as a top lawyer in the field of immigration law in the Denver-metro area. Leigh has experience in a wide range of cases\, both family-based and employment-based\, immigrant and nonimmigrant matters. Her specialty is in working with persons of extraordinary ability\, investors\, and religious workers. Leigh also has extensive expertise in H-2B petitions for seasonal companies in the landscaping and concrete industries. \nLeigh is a Michigan native and a December 2011 graduate of the University of Michigan Law School. Leigh interned with the Omaha Immigration Court\, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center\, the University of Michigan Law School’s Human Trafficking Clinic\, and the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree with high distinction from the University of Michigan where she majored in Political Science and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa. \nLeigh has served as a member of the AILA Colorado USCIS Liaison and Legislative Advocacy Committee since 2017. She was the recipient of the AILA Chapter Pro Bono Champion Award in 2016. A successful community organizer\, she has managed and facilitated over 15 citizenship workshops on behalf of AILA Colorado. Leigh regularly volunteers at the Colorado Lawyers Committee’s Legal Nights. She previously served as the Immigration Committee Chair of the Arapahoe County Bar Association. Leigh is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).
