DESCRIPTION:January is National Mentoring Month\, and the FBA is helping you celebrate with its newly launched “Lift Up Leaders” Mentorship Program. \nYou’re invited to attend an Open House webinar to learn more about the Lift Up Leaders mentorship program.  The Open House features three FBA volunteers who served on the task force that studied and developed the FBA’s Lift Up Leaders mentorship program and can explain how the FBA came to offer the national program. They will share how mentors have shaped their own careers and the value of such relationships. The panel will also share tips and resources on how to be a successful mentor and what mentees can expect from having an experienced FBA member to offer pointers on the practice of law and opportunities available within the Federal Bar Association. \nRegistration is Closed \n\nAbout the Presenter\nAshley Akers (Moderator) \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJudge Karoline Mehalchick \nHon. Karoline Mehalchick is a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Scranton\, Pennsylvania\, where she was appointed to the bench of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania on July 15\, 2013. Prior to joining the court\, she was a partner with a small law firm in Clarks Summit\, Pennsylvania\, where she represented a broad range of clients in both state and federal trial and appellate courts\, including the U.S. Supreme Court. She is a graduate of Schreyer Honors College of Pennsylvania State University (B.S.\, Geosciences) and Tulane University School of Law (J.D.). After graduating from law school\, she served as a law clerk to Hon. Trish Corbett\, Court of Common Pleas of Lackawanna County. Judge Mehalchick was an adjunct professor at Marywood University from 2003 until 2012\, where she taught Legal and Clinical Aspects of Health Care to graduate students studying nursing and health administration. Judge Mehalchick has been active in the FBA for over 10 years. She is a past president of the Middle District of Pennsylvania Chapter\, previously serving as its secretary\, vice president\, and president-elect. Judge Mehalchick served as an FBA Third Circuit Vice President for five years. In addition to various roles she has held in the past\, Judge Mehalchick currently serves as a member of the Sections and Divisions Council\, a judicial profiles editor for The Federal Lawyer\, Vice Chair of the Judiciary Division\, and the Judiciary Division Advisor to the Diversity and Inclusion Committee. She also participates in weekly Scholar Exchanges through the National Constitution Center\, leading middle school and high school students in discussions about constitutional issues and civil discourse. \nWithin the court\, Judge Mehalchick sits on the Judicial Conference Codes of Conduct Committee and serves on the Magistrate Judges Advisory Group of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. Within the Middle District of Pennsylvania\, she chairs the Prisoner Litigation Settlement Program and is a member of the Magistrate Judge and Pro Se Law Clerk Committee. Judge Mehalchick is active in the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Commission on Women in the Profession and is a past president of the Younger Lawyers Division of the Lackawanna Bar Association. \nTamera Fine \nTamera Fine is a career prosecutor who has represented the interests of the United States for 31 years\, the last 20 as a criminal Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Maryland. Ms. Fine specializes in cases involving identity theft\, fraud and crimes against children. She is currently the Chief of the Asset Recovery Unit for the District of Maryland. Before that\, Ms. Fine led the Maryland Identity Theft Working Group from its formation in 2006 until September\, 2017. Beginning in 1991\, she served as a civil attorney\, first with the Tax Division and later with the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office\, before moving to the Criminal Division in 2002. She is a graduate of Columbia Law School in New York. \nMs. Fine has spoken extensively on the topics of fraud\, identity theft\, elder fraud and abuse\, victims’ rights\, task forces and working groups\, asset forfeiture and criminal collections\, and served as the writer and subject matter advisor for a series of public service announcements about identity theft starring Frank Abagnale.
