Bannard\, Partner\, Kaplan Kirsch & Rockwell LLP and TTSL Section Chair 2018-2019. \n\nSponsored by: Transportation & Transportation Security Law Section \n  \nRegistration is Closed \n\nAbout the Speakers\nDavid Bannard\, Partner\, Kaplan Kirsch & Rockwell LLP (Moderator) \nJohn Putnam\, Deputy General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Transportation \nJohn E. Putnam has been appointed as the Deputy General Counsel for the U.S. Department of Transportation\, and will serve as the Acting General Counsel.  In this role\, he works closely with the Department’s senior leadership and nearly 500 attorneys to manage legal and policy matters concerning all of the Department’s operating administrations. \nPrior to joining the Biden Administration\, John worked most of his career as a transportation\, environment\, and energy attorney in Denver and Washington\, DC. He represented State departments of transportation\, local governments\, transportation agencies\, and private entities in Colorado and nationwide on a range of transportation\, energy\, environmental issues under the Federal transportation laws\, the Clean Air Act\, the National Environmental Policy Act\, and the Clean Water Act. \nMost recently\, John was the Director of Environmental Programs for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). He was responsible for overseeing the air\, water\, waste\, and environmental health and sustainability divisions\, as well as coordinating with the Air Quality Control Commission\, Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission\, and Water Quality Control Commission. While at CDPHE\, he also served as a Commissioner on the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and Trustee for the Natural Resource Damages Trustees.  John worked closely with the Colorado Department of Transportation\, Colorado Energy Office\, Department of Natural Resources\, Department of Agriculture\, and other agencies to develop Colorado’s Roadmap for Greenhouse Gas Pollution Reduction Roadmap\, clean truck plans\, critical infrastructure COVID-19 support\, and other programs for the State of Colorado. \nJohn also served as chair and member of the Regional Air Quality Council\, which is the lead air quality planning agency for the Denver metropolitan area and North Front Range\, as well as chair of the Boulder Planning Board and Boulder Board of Open Space Trustees.  He also served as a consulted expert or committee member for projects for the United States Government Accountability Office\, the Transportation Research Board\, the National Academies\, and Airports Council International. \nJohn received his law degree from the University of Chicago and Bachelor’s degree from Williams College. \n\nRegistration\nRegistration for this event will close July 27 at 4 PM ET.  \nRegistration Fees \n\nFBA Members & Nonmembers: Complimentary Registration\n\n\nIf you have any questions regarding this program\, please contact sections@fedbar.org

SUMMARY:Webinar: The First Amendment and Federal Courts
DESCRIPTION:This program will provide an overview of some of the current First Amendment issues pertinent to federal court practitioners\, including access to coverage of court proceedings\, the rise of “anti-SLAPP” statutes\, and implications of false information and disinformation in the defamation context. \nPresented by the Civil Rights Law Section and Federal Judicial Law Clerk Committee \n\nAbout the Presenters\nLeita Walker\, Partner\, Ballard Spahr LLP \nLeita Walker is a litigator and trial lawyer in the Media and Entertainment Law Group of Ballard Spahr LLP in Minneapolis. Leita has nearly 15 years of experience defending media organizations in libel litigation and helping them obtain access to governmental and judicial records. Most recently\, she served as counsel for media outlets covering the trial of officer Derek Chauvin  in the death of George Floyd\, obtaining what Law360 described as “extraordinary access” to members of the public.  “Let people watch the process\, because they will trust it more if they can see it\,” Walker said. \n \nAshley Messenger\, Senior Associate General Counsel\, National Public Radio (NPR) \nAshley Messenger is Senior Associate General Counsel at National Public Radio (NPR)\, specializing in First Amendment and Media Law.  She has been a media lawyer for over 25 years at various news organizations\, and was formerly a commercial radio talk show host.  She has taught First Amendment law at the University of Michigan Law School and media law at American University\, The George Washington University\, and George Mason University.  She is also the author of a textbook\, Media Law: A Practical Guide\, as well as numerous law review articles. \nEric Weslander\, Attorney\, Stevens & Brand LLP (Moderator) \nEric Weslander is a litigator and former journalist with Stevens & Brand LLP in Lawrence\, KS. Eric uses his investigative and storytelling skills to advocate for clients in a variety of lawsuits involving tort claims\, business disputes\, media law and governmental regulation.
