SUMMARY:Immigration Law Section: Categorically Ridiculous: The Categorical Approach and Determining the Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions
DESCRIPTION:Join the Immigration Law Section’s Newer Lawyers Division for their webinar series. These webinars enable attendees to receive education and mentoring from seasoned immigration attorneys in specific areas of immigration law. Panelists Kevin A. Gregg and Sabrina Balgamwalla will discuss basic concepts and new developments related to determining the immigration consequences of criminal convictions. The discussion will include overviews of the categorical and modified categorial approaches\, the realistic probability test\, and analysis of recent case law. \nSponsored by the Immigration Law Section \nRegistration for this event is now closed. \n\nAbout the Presenters\nSabrina Balgamwalla is the director of the Asylum and Immigration Law Clinic at Wayne Law School in Detroit\, Michigan and has been part of the clinical faculty since 2017. She\, alongside her students\, represents clients in removal defense\, bond\, and humanitarian immigration matters. Sabrina previously directed an immigration clinic at the University of North Dakota School of Law and served as a teaching fellow at the University of Baltimore School of Law Immigrant Rights Clinic. Prior to entering academia\, she worked as a nonprofit immigration and domestic violence attorney. Sabrina’s scholarship focuses on the intersection of gender\, race\, and citizenship in immigration policy and enforcement; her previous law review articles focus on trafficking\, labor exploitation\, and derivative visa status issues. \nKevin A. Gregg is a partner with Kurzban Kurzban Tetzeli & Pratt\, practicing in all areas of immigration law\, including removal defense\, appellate advocacy\, federal court litigation\, and USCIS representation. Prior to joining KKTP\, Kevin was a Judicial Clerk with the Honorable Beth F. Bloom in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.  Before that\, he served as a Judicial Law Clerk and Attorney Advisor in the San Diego Immigration Court\, Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR)\, through the Attorney General’s Honors Program.  He now applies the skills he developed working for judges to represent clients at all stages of immigration proceedings. Kevin received his law degree from Boston University School of Law and is admitted to the State Bars of California and Florida.
