DESCRIPTION:January 12\, 2021\, from 8:15 AM -12 PM EST on Zoom. \n\n\n\n\nThe United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio Federal Practice Seminar is open to all attorneys\, included those already admitted to practice in the Southern District of Ohio and those seeking admission. This seminar is specially designed for lawyers seeking admission to practice in the Southern District of Ohio. Speakers will discuss practice before the District Judges and Magistrate Judges\, and practice in Bankruptcy Court. Speakers will also discuss the Local Rules\, the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure\, and the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.\nAll attorneys seeking admission to the bar of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio must attend one such seminar. It is offered only twice per year in Cincinnati. SUMMARY:Admiralty Law Section: Admiralty and Maritime Law Issues Affecting the Plaintiff’s Bar
DESCRIPTION:This roundtable will discuss current issues affecting the maritime plaintiff’s bar. Topics will include: “905 (b) duty to provide safe access in a non-stevedoring\, non-shipyard environment.  Rockets\, barges and vessel to vessel transfers at sea\, oh my!” and “Maintenance and Cure: Ancient remedy—modern applications.” The two speakers will be moderated by our CLE Chair\, Charles Davant but the object is for attendees to have an open discussion\, ask questions and discuss other issues affecting the maritime plaintiff’s bar. \nRegistration for this event is now closed. \n\nAbout the Speakers\nCharles D. Naylor\, Attorney at Law\, Law Offices of Charles D. Naylor \nCharles D. Naylor has been a maritime personal injury trial lawyer in the state and federal courts of Southern California for more than 40 years. During his career\, Mr. Naylor has successfully settled or tried hundreds of cases arising from injuries occurring in the ports of Los Angeles\, Long Beach and seamen working around the world. \nMr. Naylor enjoys a national reputation among his peers for his strict adherence to the highest standards of ethics\, quality of work\, and successful prosecution of injury cases. In 2007 he was a finalist for the Consumer Attorney of the Year Award presented by the Consumer Attorneys of California and in 2008 was a recipient of California Lawyer Magazine’s prestigious CLAY Award for his successful representation of a longshore worker’s widow in a wrongful death/LHWCA/product liability jury trial against then DaimlerChrysler. SUMMARY:Immigration Law Section: Breakfast Series - Breakfast from the Border – A Look at Both Practice and Policy in the Current Landscape at the Dawn of a New Administration
DESCRIPTION:This roundtable will discuss policy and practice at the southern border and the challenges what a new administration on the horizon could mean. This is the first in a monthly series of roundtables hosted by the Immigration Law Section. \nRegistration for this event is now closed. \n\nAbout the Speakers\nCarlos Castañeda  \nThe son of two Mexican immigrants\, Carlos Castañeda is a proud San Antonio boy by birth\, and by choice if he had had a say in the matter. He is a Board Certified specialist in immigration law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. \nAfter graduating from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law with a JD degree and a Master of Laws degree\, Carlos has worked for a senior member of the Texas Legislature; in the nonprofit world at RAICES (the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services)\, the largest non-profit focused on immigration law in Texas; and later in  private practice. He has worked on all aspects of immigration law\, ranging from family-based and employment-based immigration cases to removal cases before the immigration courts. In addition to his attorney work\, Carlos has also been a recurring guest on national radio programs and local Spanish-language television stations. \nTodd Miller \nTodd Miller has researched and written about border issues for more than 15 years\, the last eight as an independent journalist and writer. He resides in Tucson\, Arizona\, but also has spent many years living and working in Oaxaca\, Mexico.
