Please view the FBA Calendar for more webinar opportunities. \nPlease join the LGBT Law Section of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) for a webinar to discuss recent court decisions on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In June 2020\, a majority of the U.S. Supreme Court held in Bostock v. Clayton County that the term “sex” in Title VII prohibits workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Panelists will discuss this decision and its implications for the LGBTQ+ community. \nPresented by the LGBT Law Section \n\nAbout the Presenters:\nChristine E. Dieter\, Associate\, Hinckley Allen (Moderator) \nChristine is an Associate in the firm’s Environmental and Energy Practice Groups and Litigation practice. She has experience litigating in state and federal courts and before administrative agencies. Christine has worked on permitting matters for offshore wind farms and worked on litigation relating to the cleanup of contaminated land. Christine represents regional utilities in proceedings before state regulatory agencies and related appeals of those decisions\, including before the Rhode Island Supreme Court and Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. She assists with permitting and other regulatory matters for owners and developers of energy generation projects and provides regulatory advice regarding project development. Christine also works on employment law matters and has achieved early dismissals of matters before the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. In addition to litigating employment claims\, Christine advises employers on employee policies and handbooks\, compliance with the many federal and state laws affecting employers\, and on personnel decisions. Christine has experience with all stages of complex commercial litigation\, including pre-litigation dispute resolution\, motion practice\, summary judgment\, mediation\, trial\, and appellate practice. Christine is a member of the firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee. \nDonald (Don) C. Davis\, Senior Counsel\, Epic Games\, Inc. \nDon Davis is Senior Counsel at Epic Games\, Inc. where he chiefly advises the company on employment and human resources matters. Prior to joining Epic Games\, Don counseled and represented employers in employment matters and disputes as an associate at Mintz\, Levin\, Cohn\, Ferris\, Glovsky & Popeo\, P.C. in Washington\, DC. Don has also served in roles in which he represented LGBTQ individuals who faced workplace discrimination and harassment. Don has served and continues to serve on nonprofit boards\, including as a past Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Equality North Carolina and as Governance Chair of the Board of Directors of SMYAL\, an LGBTQ youth mentorship and leadership development organization in the Washington\, DC metro region. He served two terms as President of the LGBT Bar Association of the District of Columbia and the National LGBT Bar Association recognized Don among its 40 Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40 for his advocacy on behalf of LGBTQ individuals in both his personal and professional work. \nOmar Gonzalez-Pagan\, Senior Attorney and Health Care Strategist\, Lambda Legal \nOmar Gonzalez-Pagan is a Senior Attorney and the Health Care Strategist at Lambda Legal. He has played an instrumental role in advancing the civil and constitutional rights of LGBT people under the U.S. Constitution and federal civil rights laws regarding education\, employment\, health care\, and housing. As a member of the legal team in Obergefell v. Hodges\, Gonzalez-Pagan helped secure marriage equality at the U.S. Supreme Court while representing four same-sex couples seeking respect for their out-of-state marriages and accurate birth certificates for their Ohio-born children. He was also lead counsel in Conde-Vidal v. Rius-Armendariz and co-counsel in Robicheaux v. Caldwell\, successfully challenging Puerto Rico’s and Louisiana’s marriage bans\, respectively. Gonzalez-Pagan helped secure two landmark decisions—the first and second appellate rulings in the country—holding that Title VII covers sexual orientation discrimination in Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College and Zarda v. Altitude Express\, Inc. As lead counsel in Smith v. Avanti\, he also obtained the first court decision in the country holding that the Federal Housing Act’s sex discrimination prohibition covers discrimination against LGBT people. As Health Care Strategist\, Gonzalez-Pagan has been a leading voice in the proper interpretation of the Affordable Care Act’s nondiscrimination provision\, particularly as it applies to LGBT people. Gonzalez-Pagan is also a key architect of Lambda Legal’s efforts to secure the ability of transgender people to obtain accurate identity documents\, including birth certificates. Gonzalez-Pagan received his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School\, where he was an editor of the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law. He also possesses a Master’s in Environmental Studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Cornell University. Gonzalez-Pagan was born and raised in San Juan\, Puerto Rico. SUMMARY:Maryland Chapter: Qualified Immunity for Law Enforcement Officers- Abolishment vs. Preservation Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The discussion will be moderated by Retired U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge and former Baltimore City Solicitor Andre M. Davis. Panelists will discuss the pros and cons of qualified immunity\, whether it should be preserved or abolished and its impact on various populations in an informative and accessible manner for the public and legal community. \n\nAbout the Presenters\nJason G. Downs\, Esq.\, assisted in securing a $6.4 million settlement for the family of Freddie Gray and represented the family of Crystalline Barnes\, who was killed during a traffic stop in Jackson\, Mississippi. Mr. Downs served as one of the youngest Training Directors ever in the history of the Public Defender Service in Washington\, D.C. \nThomas H. Barnard\, Esq.\, currently serves as a shareholder at Baker Donelson and previously served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney\, military prosecutor and military police officer. Mr. Barnard has over 20 years of government experience. His civil litigation practice includes Bivens and 42 U.S.C. 1983 civil rights litigation. \nThiru Vignarajah is a partner at DLA Piper and previously served as Deputy Attorney General for the State of Maryland\, a federal and state prosecutor\, and clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer. Mr. Vignarajah served as lead counsel for the State of Maryland in the high profile post-conviction case of Adnan Syed. \nJean M. Zachariasiewicz\, Esq.\, is a partner at Brown\, Goldstein and Levy\, LLP.  Previously she was a litigation associate at a DC civil rights firm and the Francis D. Murnaghan\, Jr. Appellate Advocacy Fellow at the Public Justice Center\, where she practiced appellate litigation in the areas of civil rights and poverty law.  Jean clerked for Judge Myron H.
