Food Hall in Raleigh.\u00a0 Members also welcomed the clerk\u2019s office staff, to show appreciation for their contributions to practice in our district.\u00a0 The event was also attended by several of our judges.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Luncheon with Judge Allyson Duncan<br>\n<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>August 30, 2018<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nOn August 30, 2018, the Eastern District of North Carolina Chapter of the Federal Bar Association hosted a luncheon at Womble Bond Dickinson in Raleigh featuring Judge Allyson Duncan. Judge Duncan, who had recently celebrated 15 years with the Fourth Circuit, shared reflections on her path to and time on the bench.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>YLD Luncheon with Hon. Louise Flanagan<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>April 13, 2018<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThe Younger Lawyers Division hosted a lunch CLE featuring United States District Court Judge Louise Flanagan at Caffe Luna in downtown Raleigh on Friday, April 13, 2018. In her presentation, Judge Flanagan discussed her career, her experiences from the bench, and her advice for young lawyers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Federal District Court Practice CLE<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>February 23, 2018<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThis three-hour CLE featured three panels. The first panel on \u201cTrends in Federal Court\u201d featured Chief U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III and U.S. District Court Judge Terrence W. Boyle. The second panel on \u201cSettlement Conferences and Discovery Disputes\u201d featured U.S. Magistrate Judges James E. Gates, Robert B. Jones, Jr., and Robert T. Numbers, II. The final panel on \u201cEthics of Using the Media\u201d featured Raleigh criminal defense attorneys, Joe Cheshire and Wade Smith. At this event, the chapter also presented the second annual Judge David Daniel Award to David W. Long for integrity, commitment, and service to the legal community.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Service Day<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>April 28, 2017<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nIn conjunction with the FBA\u2019s National Community Outreach Project, the chapter organized an event at the Wilmington Courthouse for New Hanover High School students. The students enjoyed a tour of the courthouse, participated in a discussion with the Magistrate Judge Robert Jones and members of the U.S. Probation Office, U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office, and Federal Public Defender Office. Students were able to participate in a mock sentencing hearing wherein they played the role of the judge in a sentencing hearing. Students had lunch with the attorneys after the program.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Federal District Court Practice CLE<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>February 3, 2017<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThis three-hour CLE featured three panels. The first panel on \u201cThe History of the Court\u201d featured Chief U.S. District Judge James C. Dever III and U.S. District Court Judge Terrence W. Boyle. The second panel on \u201cDiscovery, Mediation, Trial, &amp; Everything in Between\u201d featured U.S. Magistrate Judges James E. Gates and Robert T. Numbers, II. The final panel on \u201cLocal Rules Primer\u201d featured Alyssa Hockaday, Attorney Advisor to the court, Christian Dysart, a member of the Local Criminal Rules Committee, and Chris Graebe, a member of the Local Civil Rules Committee. At this CLE, the chapter also presented its first ever chapter award, the Judge David Daniel Award, to Thomas P. McNamara, for integrity, commitment, and service to the legal community.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Butner Prison Tour<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>July 22, 2016<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nChapter members toured the Federal Correctional Institution at Butner. The tour included the library and educational facilities, recreational facility, UNICOR, substance abuse unit, and civil commitment unit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Health Care Symposium<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>July 21, 2016<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nWe co-hosted a symposium entitled Governmental Investigations of Health Care Entities with the N.C. Society of Health Care Attorneys, the FBA Health Law Section, the FBA-WDNC Chapter, and the firm of Parker Poe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Judges\u2019 CLE<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>July 7, 2016<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThe chapter, along with Smith Moore Leatherwood, hosted a CLE entitled There\u2019s a Court for That: \u201cForum\u201d Selection in Business Cases. The distinguished panel included U.S. Circuit Judge Albert Diaz, N.C. Business Court Judge James Gale, and N.C. Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Service Day<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>April 20, 2016<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nIn conjunction with the FBA\u2019s National Community Outreach Project, the chapter organized an event at the Greenville Courthouse for students and teachers from J.H. Rose High School in Greenville. The students and teachers enjoyed a tour of the courthouse, sat in on a suppression hearing, and heard from various individuals, including U.S. District Judge Malcolm Howard, U.S. Magistrate Judge Kimberly Swank, clerks, case managers, the U.S. Marshals, Court Security Officers, members of the U.S. Probation, United States Attorney, and Federal Public Defender offices.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>A Discussion about Federal Sentencing Guidelines<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>April 11, 2016<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThe chapter co-sponsored the Campbell Law School Chapter\u2019s debate on Federal Sentencing Guidelines between Profs. Douglas Berman and William Otis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Intro to Practice in EDNC<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>November 6, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThe Chapter hosted a CLE at the Raleigh Courthouse: Introduction to Practice in EDNC and Federal and Local Rules Update. Participants were also able to take a tour of the courthouse.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>YLD Luncheon with Hon. Robert T. Numbers, II <\/strong><br>\n<\/span>September 11, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThe Younger Lawyers Division hosted a lunch CLE featuring United States Magistrate Judge Robert T. Numbers, II at 18 Seaboard in downtown Raleigh on Friday, September 11, 2015. In his presentation, Judge Numbers discussed practices in his chambers and gave attendees his reflections from his first year on the bench.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s Health Care Term in Review: How the Court\u2019s Opinions Will Shape the Health Care Landscape<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>July 16, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nOn Thursday, July 16, 2015, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, the Eastern District of North Carolina chapter of the Federal Bar Association, along with the North Carolina Society of Health Care Attorneys, the Federal Bar Association\u2019s Health Law Section, and Parker Poe, hosted a symposium reviewing the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s decisions regarding health care in the 2015 term. Panelists reviewed the Court\u2019s opinions and their legal and practical implications.<br>\nPanelists included professors from six of North Carolina\u2019s law schools, as well as the Duke Public Policy and the National Health Law Project. The event was telecast in Parker Poe\u2019s Charlotte office and broadcast online.<br>\nIn Raleigh, a reception followed. Attendees will receive two hours of CLE credit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Luncheon with Chief Judge William Byrd Traxler, Jr.<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>June 25, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nOn Thursday, June 25, 2015, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm, our chapter, along with Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP\u2019s Appellate Practice Group, hosted a luncheon in Raleigh with the Honorable William Byrd Traxler, Jr., Chief Judge of the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. The lively luncheon discussion covered everything from federal appellate practice to brief-writing to oral advocacy tips. The luncheon was at 18 Seaboard Restaurant in Raleigh and cost $15.00 for members and $25.00 for non-members. Attendees will receive one hour of CLE for this event (application pending).<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Luncheon with Judge Robert B. Jones, Jr.<\/strong><br>\n<\/span>June 4, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nOn Thursday, June 4, 2015, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm, our chapter hosted a luncheon in Wilmington with Magistrate Judge Robert B. Jones, Jr. at the George on the Riverwalk (128 S. Water Street, Wilmington 28401). The luncheon was free for FBA members and $10 for non-members. This casual luncheon was a great opportunity to get out of the office and visit with practitioners and court personnel. There was no CLE credit for this event.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Service Day at the Tammy Lynn Center <\/strong><br>\n<\/span>May 15, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThe Eastern District of North Carolina chapter hosted its first service opportunity. FBA members volunteered at the Tammy Lynn Center for Developmental Disabilities, a center founded in 1969 to empower families and enrich the lives of children and adults through education, community, and support services. Volunteers spent the morning learning about the Center and working on the grounds. To learn more about what this amazing place does for families within our district, please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tammylynncenter.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>http:\/\/www.tammylynncenter.org<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>Substance Abuse: A Medical Perspective for Lawyers and Their Families <\/strong><br>\n<\/span>April 27, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nOn April 27th from 12pm to 1:30pm at Caffe Luna, the Federal Bar Association hosted a one-hour lunchtime CLE led by one of our chapter\u2019s members, emergency medicine physician and attorney Dan W. Bolton, III, D.O.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blueline_divider\"><\/div>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: large\"><strong>CLE Featuring Perspectives from the Bench <\/strong><br>\n<\/span>February 13, 2015<br>\n<\/strong><br>\nThe EDNC Chapter hosted a three-hour CLE at Campbell Law School on Friday, February 13, 2015. The first hour of the CLE featured a panel with all four of our Magistrate Judges, Judge Gates, Judge Jones, Judge Numbers, and Judge Swank. The second panel featured three of our U.S. District Judges, Chief Judge Dever, Judge Boyle, and Judge Howard. And, the third panel featured Chief Judge Dever, Judge Gates, our Clerk of Court Julie Richards Johnston, and practitioners Myron Hill and Camden Webb. This final panel discussed the ethical obligations of serving as local counsel. Following the CLE, the Chapter hosted a social at the Flying Saucer. Sachs<br>\n<\/span>March 31, 2014 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prof. Stephen E. Sachs of the Duke University School of Law discussed the Supreme Court\u2019s recent decision in Atlantic Marine Construction<br>\nCo. v. U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, 134 S. Ct. 568 (2013).
