Tenth Annual Summer Associates Day<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On June 16, 2017, the Broward County Chapter hosted its Tenth Annual Summer Associates Day at the Federal Courthouse. Law students heard presentations from members of the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office and the Federal Public Defender\u2019s Office, as well as private practitioners and observed a civil hearing, criminal hearings and a U.S. Naturalization Ceremony.<\/p>\n

Law Clerk Recruiting Reception <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On April 20, 2017, the Broward County Chapter hosted its first Law Clerk Recruiting Reception, connecting law firms and government employers with law clerks who are seeking employment.<\/p>\n


\nThe group networked before the law clerks listened to a brief presentation by each employer.<\/em><\/p>\n


\nBoard Member Constantine Economides introduced the program and the employer presentations.<\/em><\/p>\n

U.S. Naturalization Ceremony<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Broward County Chapter President Jennifer Bullock and South Florida Chapter President Benjamin Brodsky welcomed new citizens at a U.S. Naturalization Ceremony at the U.S. District Courthouse in Miami on April 14, 2017. The Ceremony was presided over by U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom.<\/p>\n

Federal Court Technology and Practice CLE<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On March 30, 2017, the Broward County Chapter hosted a Federal Court Technology and Practice CLE featuring two U.S. District Court Judges, two U.S. Magistrate Judges and a panel of law clerks to discuss effective use of technology in court. The program also offered practice tips and featured a demonstration of technology in the courtroom. U.S. District Court Judge Beth Bloom conducted a ceremonial swearing-in of attendees who are admitted to practice in the Southern District of Florida.<\/p>\n

On February 23, 2017, the Broward County Chapter hosted a luncheon with U.S. District Judge Kenneth Marra who spoke about highlights from his career as a district judge, including several interesting cases he presided over.<\/p>\n

Law School Division Event<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On February 17, 2017, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom hosted 15 law students in her courtroom in conjunction with the FBA Broward Chapter and the newly established Law School Division at the Nova Southeastern University Law School. Judge Bloom and her law clerks spoke to students about federal court practice, clerkships, internships and tips for practicing in federal court. The students also observed two hearings and a U.S. Naturalization Ceremony presided by Judge Bloom.<\/p>\n

On November 17, 2016, the Broward County Chapter hosted George Piro, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI, Miami Division. Mr. Piro spoke to the group his role as the lead interrogator of Saddam Hussein and the FBI\u2019s counterterrorism efforts.<\/p>\n

Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center\u2019s Upperclassmen Moot Court Competition <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

On October 15, 2016, Broward County Chapter Board Members judged the Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center\u2019s Upperclassmen Moot Court Competition that addressed the interplay between the Sixth Amendment right to a fair trial and Federal Rule of Evidence 606(b), which prohibits a party from offering a juror\u2019s statements made during deliberations when such statements are introduced to challenge the validity of a verdict. The Broward County Chapter recently established a Law School Division at Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center.<\/p>\n
