To All Members of the Veterans and Military Law Section:

Welcome to the Veterans and Military Law Section. Since our creation by the founding Chair, the Hon. Jack Farley, our section has concentrated on helping our nation’s veterans and engaging practitioners of military law in their unique environment. In the last few years, the section has undergone a renaissance under the strong leadership of my predecessor section chairs, past FBA national presidents Bob DeSousa and Jim Richardson.

In order to further the goals of the section, we frequently partner with other sections within the FBA as well as entities outside of the association. To cite a couple of examples, we partnered with the organizers of the 2018 Annual Meeting and Convention in New York in cosponsoring a “project outreach” session of court with the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces.  This Fall, along with FBA’s Career Service Division, we will cosponsor a CLE program on assisting veterans with claims before the Department of Veterans Affairs and similar matters. We will also once again partner with a sister organization, the Judge Advocates Association, in sponsoring the day-long Jobs for JAGs seminar.  Partnerships such as these enable us to engage in “force multiplication” of efforts in the interrelated areas of veterans and military law.

We are a relatively small section. Consequently, there are abundant opportunities for leadership and participation. As we create continuing legal education activities we need instructors and support workers on our CLE Committee.  Our Communications Committee puts out our high-quality newsletter which provides the outlet for those who wish to write and edit. Our Military Justice and Veterans Affairs Committees provide numerous opportunities to network among your follow counsel who represent veterans or military service members throughout the world. Finally, our Membership Committee needs committed individuals who will work to recruit new members to our section, and ensure that we retain the members already on the rolls.

You need not be someone who exclusively practices either veterans or military law to benefit from membership in the section. Military service members and veterans have issues across the legal spectrum, albeit with some different questions. Your expertise in your particular field is needed and we can help you expand your practice and interest to include this unique area for federal law.

I encourage you to contact of our officers or members of the board of directors to express interest in the section or simply to see what we are doing.
