Federal Bar Association of Tampa Bay Gala Dinner with Justice Alito
On March 8, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito was the keynote speaker
at the Federal Bar Association of Tampa Bay's Annual Gala Dinner. Justice
Alito's speech, much like his visit to Tampa, carried on a central theme
- baseball. The Honorable Elizabeth Kovachevich, U.S. District Court, Middle
District of Florida along with Brad Kimbro, FBA Tampa Bay President and
Executive Partner of the Tampa office of Holland and Knight, ensured that
Alito's visit to Tampa Bay was filled with spring training baseball games.
Alito, a longtime Philadelphia Phillies fan, was able to see the Yankees,
Devil Rays, and Phillies play during his visit. In fact, the Supreme Court
justice threw out the first pitch at the Yankees' game on March 7 and the
Phillies/Devil Rays' game on March 10.
During his speech, Alito remarked that a judge shares similarities with
a baseball umpire since both professions involve interpreting complex rules
and thinking on one's feet. And both can be thankless. "While I admire
umpires, all in all I am happy that I am a judge," Alito said.
