A Message from the Chapter President

The South Carolina Chapter was originally formed in 1964 but fell dormant for years. In 2001, a group of lawyers, led by Amie Clifford, worked to reactivate the state chapter. The chapter was reissued a charter in September 2001 with 30 members. In the years since, the chapter has grown to over 300 members from private practice, government agencies, military branches, local law schools, and the courts. The chapter is committed to serving as the liaison among federal lawyers and judges. If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the Federal Bar Association and the South Carolina Chapter.

I am pleased to announce that our Chapter is co-sponsoring a symposium with the Federal Courts Law Review and the Federal Magistrate Judges Association. The symposium will be held at the Charleston School of Law on Friday, April 11, 2008, and the topic will be Current Privacy Issues in the Federal Courts. With a scheduled keynote from Professor Arthur Miller (of Wright and Miller fame), the event is drawing national attention. We will be sending you registration materials in early March but mark that date on your calendar now. View Conference Flyer: Front Back

This year the Chapter will continue to host the annual summer law clerk seminars in the four main division courthouses. Because we want to honor Judge Norton’s first year as Chief Judge of the District, the Board has voted to hold our Annual Meeting and Judicial Reception in Charleston this fall in conjunction with a half-day CLE focusing primarily on ethics. We plan to schedule the CLE to begin after lunch on a Thursday with the reception to follow that evening. We will let you know as soon as we have secured a date.

Later this year we will also launch a three-year Chapter membership initiative and several other long term projects designed to make membership in our Chapter the most valuable bar association membership for South Carolina’s federal practitioners.

In order for us to make all of this happen, we need your help. So, on behalf of the SC Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, I want to offer you an opportunity to change the practice of law in South Carolina by becoming more involved in the exciting plans for the future that our Chapter is initiating. The work we are beginning this year will change our Chapter and the future of our district courts. We hope you will be an active part of this important work.

To learn more about how you can get involved, send me a short email with your contact information and I will call you to tell you more about how you can get involved. We will find a way to get you involved that will fit your schedule and give you a sense of real contribution to the practice of law in South Carolina’s federal courts.

Email me at tgressette@rpwb.com or feel free to call me directly at 843-727-6595. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thomas P. Gressette, Jr.
Chapter President

Volunteers Needed

The South Carolina Chapter has a number of projects during the coming year.

Each year, we hold our Annual Meeting and Judicial Reception in Columbia for the federal judiciary and membership. The following day we hold an annual CLE for Federal Practice in the District of South Carolina. This year the Sixth Annual Meeting and Judicial Reception will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2007 at 6:00 PM at the Seibels House located at 1601 Richland Street, Columbia, SC. The Annual Federal Practice CLE will be held on Friday, August 24, 2007 at the USC School of Law.

If you would like to become actively involved in the activities of the chapter, please contact the chapter through its e-mail fedbar@scbar.org or one of the officers listed on this page.
