Provides support for the conduct of research, programs, and education relating to the federal courts and federal jurisprudence. A grant from this fund was used to generate the Federal Bar Association’s White Paper on Judicial Compensation and a recent update to the original document. These white papers were extremely well received by the federal judiciary, including the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The reports also received extensive coverage in the Washington Post and The Third Branch. Download the JRAEF overview document.
The Foundation is reviewing applications for a grant for up to $10,000 for a project pertaining to the federal judiciary, federal court, or federal jurisprudence. Applications are being reviewed by a panel of federal judges, academics, and leading public and private sector attorneys. The grant will be officially presented to the recipient at the Foundation luncheon at the Federal Bar Association’s annual convention on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Provides funding and other support for the children of government attorneys for college tuition, books, fees, and housing during pursuit of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The student must attend classes full-time and have a parent or guardian who is currently employed as a federal government attorney or federal judge and is a member of the Federal Bar Association.
Michael and Ilene Shaw Public Service Award Fund
This fund is made possible by the generous contributions of Ilene and Michael Shaw. Contributions to this fund are used for the annual Michael Shaw Public Service Award (for chapter public service programs) and the Ilene and Michael Shaw Younger Lawyer Public Service Grant (for chapter-sponsored public service and pro-bono activities implemented by the chapter’s Younger Lawyers Committee).
- Michael Shaw Public Service Award
The Federal Bar Association each year seeks to recognize the many public service programs sponsored by FBA chapters nationwide. Designed to assist and encourage members in providing service to their communities, the Ilene and Michael Shaw Public Service Award not only gives needed funds to continue such worthwhile efforts, but also provides seed money to plan and implement public service programs.
- The Ilene and Michael Shaw Younger Lawyer Public Service Grant
The Ilene and Michael Shaw Younger Lawyer Public Service Grant enables chapters to provide service to the public through the development and implementation of public service projects and pro bono law-related services. In order to encourage an increased and continued commitment to public service responsibility by young lawyers, these projects must be administered under the auspices of a chapter Younger Lawyers Committee.
Supports the FBA’s annual Elaine R. “Boots” Fisher Award. The award is presented as a memorial to the outstanding and unselfish contributions made by “Boots” Fisher to improve the quality of life and opportunities of all persons. The award is intended to stimulate, encourage and recognize exemplary community, public and charitable service by members of the Federal Bar Association. As such, the fund makes an annual charitable contribution to an organization for which an FBA member has performed outstanding public service.
This donor advised fund was established by the FBA’s MN Chapter. While distributions from the fund are made at the foundation’s discretion, the MN Chapter submits recommendations with respect to distributing monies from the fund. In 2004, the fund has distributed grants for the following projects:
