Issues Regarding the Judiciary
The General Counsel for sixty major U.S. corporations have written a letter to key members of Congress urging a positive response to Chief Justice John Roberts’ plea for a substantial increase to the salaries of federal judges. You may recognize a number of your clients on the list of signatories. If you would like to voice your thoughts to your representatives or the members of the Judiciary Committee, we encourage you to do so.

School Tours
The association provides tours of the federal courthouse as part of its community outreach program. We are looking for new tour guides to join this committee. The time commitment involved would only be for an orientation session and about three hours to conduct the tour. We are looking to have a pool of trained attorneys so that no one would have to do more that a couple of tours during the school year. Please contact Scott Shaw at scott.shaw@husch.com or Tonya Cammon at tcammon@gkhpc.com if you are interested in participating.

Constitution Day

On September 17, 2008, the Chattanooga Chapter assisted the District Court in hosting the second annual Constitution Day event for local high school students. Students from David Brainerd Christian School, Hixson High School, Red Bank High School, Central High School, and home-schooled students participated in the event. The event included an introductory presentation by Chief Judge Curtis L. Collier focusing on the importance and perseverance of the Constitution, a lesson on the Bill of Rights by Magistrate Judge William Carter, as well as a student-oriented question and answer session structured much like a game-show, hosted by Magistrate Judge Susan Lee. District Judge Sandy Mattice presented the closing remarks. The event concluded with refreshments during which the students mingled with several judges as well as court personnel.
