The Chapter will participate with the District Court Clerk’s office in promoting this year’s Law Day theme, “The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity” through programs at local schools. We will need a number of volunteers.

Previous Chapter Activities

On April 30, 2008, the Atlanta Chapter hosted a breakfast featuring a panel discussion entitled, “Non-Obvious Ways to Make Your Mark:  Litigating Intellectual Property Cases in the Northern District of Georgia”.  Panelists included Hon. Charles Pannell, Jr., of the Northern District of Georgia and IP practitioners Norwood “Woody” Jameson of Duane Morris and Steve Moore of Kilpatrick Stockton.  Practitioner Bill Ragland of Hunton & Williams moderated the panel.  Chapter executive committee members Henry Quillian of Fellows LaBriola and Steve Moore co-chaired the event.

Reflections on the ABA American Jury Project: Advancing Innovative Approaches to Jury Trials in Federal Court—Luncheon Program
On April 2, 2008, the Atlanta Chapter of the Federal Bar Association hosted a luncheon at the law firm of Arnall Golden Gregory.  The keynote speaker was Dennis Drasco, chair of the ABA’s Commission on the American Jury and 2008 President of the New Jersey Federal Bar Association.  Mr. Drasco spoke about innovative principles in federal jury trials.  Chapter member Ed Marshall chaired the event.

2008 Robert S. Vance Forum on the Bill of Rights

The Atlanta Chapter presented this year's forum on the topic, "Voter ID Laws: Preventing Fraud or Promoting Disenfranchisement?" Panelists included Emmet Bondurant of Bondurant, Mixson & Elmore in Atlanta; Neil Bradley of the ACLU Voting Rights Project; Thomas Fisher, the Solicitor General for Indian, who argued in favor of Indiana's voer ID law before the U.S. Supreme Court on Jan. 9, 2008; and Randy Evans of McKenna Long Aldridge LLP in Atlanta. Respected Atlanta journalist Denis O'Hayer of WXIA-TV moderated the forum. The Atlanta Chapter presents the forum annually in honor of Judge Robert S. Vance, who was assassinated by a letter bomb in 1989. Senior Judge Emmett Ripley Cox of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit presented a tribute to Judge Vance at the beginning of the forum, which was chaired by Atlanta Chapter YLD co-chairs Eric Schroeder and Michael Abramson.

Technology in the Northern District Courtroom seminar

The Atlanta Chapter and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia presented this sold-out seminar that included presentations by Pros. Frederic Lederer of William & Mary School of Law, attorney Ed Buckley of Buckley & Klein in Atlanta, and district court technology specialist Mark Allen. Judge Timothy Batten of the Northern District of Georgia hosted a reception for organizers preceding the seminar. Atlanta Chapter Vice President Kevin Maxim chaired the event.

Jim came to Atlanta to demonstrate his appreciation to the chapter for hosting the 2007 FBA Annual Meeting and Convention and recognized the chapter members who helped make the convention a great success, including Hon. Lunch with Chief Judge Jack T. Camp of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia

On Jan. 24, 2007, the Atlanta Chapter hosted a luncheon honoring the newly-installed Chief Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Hon. Jack T. Camp. Chief Judge Camp spoke about renovations to the Richard Russell Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse, and introduced the GSA architect supervising the renovations, Robert McCabe. The clerk of the court, James N. Hatten, discussed electronic filing and the court's Web site. Over 100 people attended the luncheon, which was held at the offices of Kilpatrick Stockton LLP.
