From the Chair

It seems like just yesterday I volunteered to write circuit updates for the L&E Section…clearly I had no idea what I was getting myself into! Approximately five years, 42 circuit updates, 35 Board meetings, three Labouring Oar articles, three Half-Day CLEs, two Biennial conferences, one national CLE, one leadership training, and one The Federal Lawyer article later, I have learned an enormous amount, made incredible friends, and certainly grown as an employment lawyer. I am honored and privileged to serve as your Chair of the L&E Section for the next fiscal year, and look forward to continuing the great work that Donna Currault has done this past year. On behalf of the section, we thank you, Donna, for an amazing year.

Speaking of which, we have a lot of exciting opportunities and local events coming up, which we encourage all members to attend. Of course we have the much-anticipated Biennial Conference coming up March 9-10 in San Antonio, Texas, but we have also been busy partnering up with local Chapters to bring labor and employment law nationwide. After presentations earlier this year in New Orleans and Minneapolis, on September 23, we presented our traveling half-day CLE, “Employment Law in a Nutshell,” in Oklahoma City and will follow that with presentations in San Diego, CA (October 21), Phoenix, Arizona (November 17), San Juan (January 2017), and Omaha (Feb. 17). In 2017, we have tentatively scheduled presentations in Portland, St. Louis, Washington D.C., and Boston. In addition, in response to FBA President Judge Newman’s charge, one of my goals for the Section will be to start a Community Outreach & Civics Education Committee, and find ways for our Section to get involved with the federal courts’ civics education initiatives and community outreach goals. I know we can make this happen!

I look forward to a great year, and hope to see you all in San Antonio. If you would like to get involved with the Section, now is a great time to do so – we are always looking for authors, and are eager for submissions. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of the board members if you would like to get involved in any way – we hope you do! See you in San Antonio!
