2017 Labor and Employment Conference Bankruptcy Panel

On Friday, March 10, 2017, the Bankruptcy Law Section was honored to sponsor a panel during the Labor & Employment Section’s San Antonio CLE.  The Honorable Craig A. Gargotta, United States Bankruptcy Judge and chair-elect of the FBA Bankruptcy Section; Mary Cordell, Senior Investigator with the Department of Labor; and Sylvan S. Lang, Jr., Lang Law Firm; spoke on labor issues that arise in bankruptcy cases.

“Employment Law in a Nutshell” Travels to Oklahoma City


On September 23, 2016 the Oklahoma City Chapter of the Federal Bar Association welcomed the Labor & Employment Section’s traveling CLE team to present “Employment Law in a Nutshell.”  U.S. Magistrate Judge Suzanne Mitchell, the Chapter’s incoming President-Elect and Vice President of Programs/Outreach Coordinator, introduced the talented panel, which included Brett Strand, 3M’s Legal Affairs Counsel in Minneapolis, Minnesota; Betsy Chestney, Partner, Cornell, Smith, Mierl & Brutocao in Austin, Texas; Amber Hurst, Partner, Hammons, Gowens, Hurst & Associates in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Josh Solberg, Shareholder, McAfee & Taft, PC in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  The panel presented a three-hour CLE program covering a variety of topics, including anti-discrimination, harassment, retaliation, DOL’s new overtime rules, updates on the FLSA, FMLA, employee leave, timely wage payment obligations, and Oklahoma-specific laws and regulations.  The event, held at the William J. Holloway, Jr. Courthouse in the Western District of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, hosted more than forty attendees.   The Chapter held a social hour after the CLE at the Colcord Hotel’s Flint Restaurant in Oklahoma City.  

Labor & Employment Bi-Annual Conference

On February 18-19, 2011 the Labor & Employment Law Section held its 4th Bi-Annual conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. For the first year, the Health Law Section joined in sponsoring a half-day of CLE on Saturday. Panels included “The Essential EEO Update,” “Wage Hour: Collective Actions vs. Class Actions,” “Litigating Labor & Employment Law Cases,” “Social Networking and Privacy in the Workplace,” “EEOC Practice and Procedure,” “E-Discovery, Spoilation of Evidence, and Technology Issues,” “Hot Topics in the Tropic: Relevant Employment Law Issues for the First Circuit and Puerto Rican Attorneys,” “Health Insurance Market Reform Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Grandfathered Health Plan Exemption,” “Health Reform’s Impact on Employer-Sponsored Group Health Plans and on Institutional Healthcare Providers,” and “FMLA and ADA update.”
