Welcome to the LGBT Law Section of the FBA!  I am thrilled to serve as Chair of the Section, building upon the great work of Danny Weiss, who helped to create and grow this important new Section. We were formed in March 2016 with the purpose of creating an open, inclusive, and engaging space for all federal practitioners--LGBT and allies alike. The intersection of LGBT-related issues and concerns with other areas of the law will enable us to partner with many other FBA Sections, and we look forward to a collaborative, successful partnership.
Our section has hosted a number of events recently. The LGBT Law Section sponsored the Reception at the FBA’s Midyear Meeting on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C. Additionally, our Secretary, David Thompson, appeared on a panel called "Religious Freedom" vs. LGBT Equality: Legislative Attempts to Empower Anti-LGBT Discrimination at the Civil Rights Law Section’s day-long CLE event, the "Civil Rights Étouffée" in New Orleans on April 7, 2017.

On April 28th in New York, the Section will host the first annual New York Diversity Forum, including presentations by our section, the National Hispanic Bar Association, the Muslim Bar Association of New York, and other organizations.  We are also working on developing events in San Diego and Los Angeles in late summer.
This year, we are working to build our membership and leadership, as well as to engage our members and the broader community in important issues affecting LGBT individuals. We additionally hope to mentor younger members of the bar, network with all FBA members as a way to be supportive of one another's work, and engage in conversation that can improve the practice of law for us all.
If you would like to get involved with the Section, now is a great time to do so--we welcome submissions for articles and blog posts. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or any of the board members if you would like to get involved in any way.
I look forward to a productive and interesting year, and welcome your comments and suggestions.
Best regards,
Chirag Badlani, Chair
