Message from the Chair
by Brian Murphy

I would like to report on the Bulgarian National Rounds (BNR) of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition (Jessup Competition), held during February 2017, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

I was invited to serve as a (volunteer) international judge in the BNR, along with other international judges from France and Norway, as well as Bulgarian judges. After several days of preliminary arguments, the final national Jessup championship rounds were held at the Supreme Court of Cassation of Bulgaria, in Sofia, between law student teams from the University of Sofia (winners of the Alexander Yankov Championship Cup) and the University of Plovdiv (runner-up).

The winning team members and coaches will come to Washington, D.C. in April 2017 to participate in the Jessup international rounds alongside team members from nearly 100 countries. The team of students from the American University of Blagoevgrad (AUBG) will also compete in the Jessup international rounds as an Exhibition Team.

The Jessup Competition is the largest international law student competition, worldwide, involving several hundred international law student teams, that culminates in a Final Round, typically before three eminent jurists, who are often from the World Court (International Court of Justice). Having served as an international judge in the U.S.A for a long time, and also on national benches in Afghanistan, Bulgaria and Ukraine, I consider the Jessup Competition to accord participants with an extraordinary learning experience, that does not leave participants where it found them!

The Jessup Competition needs dedicated judgesno prior judging experience required! Please visit the International Students Association website, at: www.ilsa.org.

...Or let me know of your interest!

The rewards are great: for team members, coaches, and judges!
