Message from the Chair

As my term as Chair of the International Law Section draws to a close, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the Section’s accomplishments during the past year. One year ago, I invited dozens of ILS members from around the country to work with me to reenergize the Section. Even though many of them did not know me personally, enough of them were willing to put their faith in me to enable me to quickly fill all of the vacancies on the Board.

The section co-sponsored substantive legal education programs last fall in New York and Minnesota and some of our Miami-based members hosted a successful social event in March. Late last fall, we began publishing a quarterly e-newsletter, which was awarded the Meritorious Newsletter Award at the recent FBA annual meeting. We gathered valuable information about our members’ backgrounds and interests in an online survey that was conducted during the winter months. In February, the Bylaws Committee made significant amendments to the Section bylaws, which were approved by the ILS Executive Board and the FBA Board of Directors. We are happy to report that the International Law Section was one of only six sections and divisions that was recognized at the FBA Awards luncheon with the Section and Division Recognition Award.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank some of the many people who have contributed to the success of the Section. Judge Mimi Tsankov, who will be continuing as Vice Chair of the Section, and Brian Murphy, who will be replacing me as Chair of the Section in October after exemplary service as Membership Chair, were among my earliest and most loyal supporters. Roger Kobert, who will be continuing as Treasurer of the Section, and Heather Costanzo, who resurrected our “award-winning” newsletter, now known as Global Perspectives, were always dependable. Each of the Committee Chairs also made significant contributions, especially Angelika Hunnefeld, who submitted a CLE proposal for the FBA annual meeting on behalf of the Section. Of course, Maria Conticelli, FBA Sections and Divisions Manager, gave me indispensable guidance every step along the way.

I hope that those of you who have not been as involved in the Section in the past will become more involved in the next year. I have complete confidence that Brian Murphy, with your help, will lead the International Law Section to new heights in the coming year.
